Nice to see Emma Stone get recognition for “Cruella”. But what about Emma Stone for BSA in the same film? That is a bitchy performance for the ages.
ooops….I meant Emma Thompson above for BSA.
Lady Gaga’s quest for a HOUSE OF GUCCI Quad-Fecta of Nominations makes its first mark!
Golden Globe – Check!
Now, it’s on to SAG, OSCAR and RAZZIE!
Apparently she got Critics Choice, too. Along with Leto. Apparently there was a leak.
OK. QUINT-FECTA!
Gucci has unintentionally become the Fish Called Wanda for this generation.
No leak, both organizations announced today.
A few CC nominations leaked before the release of the full list. Gaga, Leto, Dowd, Moreno.
Three acting noms for ‘Belfast’ but nothing for the Lead actor? Only one nom for ‘The White Lotus’?
Jude Hill is a 11-year-old boy. And historically, they’re seldom nominated at the Globes (or Oscars). I just skimmed through all the nominees/winners for Best Actor in a Drama at the Globes, and I don’t believe they’re EVER nominated a boy in that category. The Globes didn’t even nominate Jamie Bell (”Billy Elliot”) and he got a SAG nomination and won the BAFTA! (At the Oscars, you have to go back to 1931 when they nominated Jackie Cooper, 9, for Best Actor.)
It’s what I suspected, thank you for confirming. I thought Jude Hill held his own pretty well amidst a cast of seasoned actors and hoped he could get swept up to a nom by the ‘Belfast’ wave, but he’s not even part of the conversation, for the reasons you mention certainly.
Sometimes SAG nominates children.
Globes are always loving Mahershala Ali. He’s been nominated above 4 times.
I think an underreported aspect of this season is the obvious tension between old line studios/exhibitors and streamers. I will not be even remotely surprised if Netflix backlash plays a major part in the final campaign stages.
Well Netflix movies have cast most of the greatest living actors. And directors, cinematographers, editors, etc.. So I think that factor is fading.
In terms of stats, only TWO films got a boost today: THE POWER OF THE DOG and BELFAST.
WEST SIDE STORY needed screenplay and didn’t get it.
LICORICE PIZZA’s snub in directing is turning it into an unlikely winner.
And actor will be Cumberbatch vs. Garfield vs. (meh) Smith. Denzel needed more.
What looks likely from now on? Debose is a contender for the win. Zegler needs SAG to become a thing.
Chastain got a huge boost as well. Unfortunately, Cruz was snubbed big time (especially with her film receiving two nods).
Musicals almost never get nominated for Screenplay at the Golden Globes. In the past 50 years alone, only THREE musicals have been up for that award: ”Cabaret,” ”Chicago” and ”La La Land.” And only ”La La Land” won. … Screenplays for musicals don’t do well at the Oscars either. The last one to win was probably ”Gigi” (1958). And when the original ”West Side Story” was up for 11 Oscar nominations, it won them all except for one: Ernest Lehman for Adapted Screenplay.
I get it but screenplay is crucial for the film’s Oscar chances.
Kushner could still get an Adapted Screenplay nomination for ”West Side Story” at the Oscars. His previous movies with ”Spielberg” – ”Lincoln,” ”Munich” – did.
There’s an extra five places in screenplay at oscar..it’ll make it in
True, but the screenplay Globe stat is the important stat here.
It might be less important than it is generally this year for obvious reasons but even if it eventually gets an Oscar nomination, this is not promising of how people percieve the film (1917 comes quickly to mind). Then again, it was at least in my opinion always distinctly behind Belfast and The Power of the Dog in terms of Oscar frontrunners so this isn’t that surprising
True. But I don’t think a musical missing Screenplay at the Globes is a big deal.
”La La Land” made history by sweeping 7 Golden Globes, including Screenplay, which no other musical has done in 50 years, & still lost Best Picture at the Oscars.
I thought that Mike Faist would have made it in for BSA
A stat is a stat. Musicals have won screenplay at the Globes, even in recent years.
Any stat is important if you think it’s important. And they get broken.
They get broken very, very rarely, though…
I think it only lost as the voters were angry at Trump winning and wanted to make a social/political statement with a moonlight win
I suspect Zegler will get that SAG nod.
Director is Campion’s to lose
Oscars:
1. Stewart
2. Kidman
3. Colman
4. Zegler
5. Chastain? Cruz?
Sounds right. I know you meant Stewart.
Just 2-and-a-half-hours later, we’ll see how alike or different the Critics Choice nominations are!
To give the Globe nominations credit, they’re certainly more ethnically diverse than ever. I was surprised to see them single out 2 Korean actors in ”Squid Game.” It was only recently that ”Parasite” won SAG for Ensemble, but none of its actors could get nominated at the Oscars or Golden Globes.
Is that not in 1.5 hours?
As much as I’d want the wonderful Melissa Barrera nominated for her fantastic work in In The Heights, the Best Actress category in Musical / Comedy is everything, especially Emma Stone’s nomination for Cruella. She killed it and deserved that kind of attention.
I also think Stone killed it. Love the move or not, she was great. So many people I know (in real life) who saw that movie told me how much they loved her in that role.
She’s a delight in the film but again where isn’t she? A true gem of an actress. Supremely, supremely talented.
Just thinking about Golden Globes this year is like looking at a car crash. It’s tragic and fascinating. Even though, they were always the shadiest awards show of the season, they were still the second biggest. I hope that they can recover from their mistakes but it seems like Hollywood is done with them.
Impressions:
-Love for Belfast and The Power of the Dog is real.
-West Side Story did just about as well as they could have.
-Don’t Look Up and Licorice Pizza seem well-liked here, but not adored.
-Nightmare Alley’s best day probably had Cate and Cooper in, but both missed.
-Ridley Scott is blanked except for Gaga. Sad for The Last Duel.
-Olivia Colman looking stronger & stronger.
-No love for Spencer other than Stewart. Kidman vs. Colman vs. Stewart there.
-Having said that, I see a world where Chastain stakes a claim; even Gaga.
-The HFPA couldn’t resist their faves Kidman, Bardem and Sorkin. I’m glad.
-Figured Mahershala Ali and Marion Cotillard would pop-up. Psyched that I predicted that.
-Encanto with 3 shows real strength. Will AMPAS duplicate?
-Parallel Mothers strong, yet couldn’t get Cruz in.
Overall, pretty pleased by these sans a few noms here & there.
”West Side Story” did the best among the musicals, with 4 nominations, but I was hoping for more. I would’ve loved to see Ansel Elgort, Mike Faist, David Alvarez and Rita Moreno make the cut. I also agree that ”In the Heights” should’ve been up for Best Musical/Comedy and scored more. Plus, I was rooting for Robin deJesus (”tick … tick … BOOM!”) for Supporting Actor.
Yes, Faist would’ve been awesome, but I also didn’t expect it with the HFPA. Moreno was a possibility, yes, but I also figured they’d go for new blood. Seems to me that SAG and AMPAS would go for Moreno, more so. I dunno.
West Side Story’s screenplay snub (and the HFPA has always been kinder to scripts than the Academy – Titanic, La La Land, Mank) is not doing it any favors.
Well, they had to get their McKay and Sorkin in there, ya know Lol.
Has Sorkin ever missed the GG when he had a movie out ? I can’t remember if that ever happened.
Malice is literally only time it’s ever happened
And that wasn’t even a solo Sorkin script. WOW. The HFPA really loves him, huh.
But isn’t it funny that the only Aaron Sorkin creation they never really got was The West Wing?! It only got two awards in its entire run (drama and actor). Most of its Emmy-winning cast never got a Globe or even a nod.
Fingers crossed that SAG & BFCA nominates ”West Side Story” for Ensemble.
Agreed!
West Side Story missed screenplay and the HFPA is usually prone to nominating front-runners in screenplay. Its miss is a huge blow.
West Side Story missed actor in a musical/comedy, which is also a huge miss. And Faist could have made it into supporting. So nope, not as well as it could have.
That’s it. I can’t get behind any of the three frontrunners (Belfast, POTD, WSS) though I like them all, I’m all in for a CODA win this year in best pic.
I love
– The Power of the Dog leading
– Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose established in the actress races
– Mahershala Ali finally recognised as a leading man
– The supporting actress quintet, I hope it will be the same at the Oscars
– Being the Ricardos in Screenplay and Actress
– Cyrano in Picture and Actor
– Raya and the Last Dragon in spite of a terrible release date
– Maid in Limited Series, Actress and Supporting Actress
– The Underground Railroad
– Mare of Easttown
– MJ Rodriguez
– Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac for their tour de force turns in Scenes from a Marriage.
I have no strong feelings about the rest. As for snubs, Nightmare Alley, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Hudson surprised me the most. I was also hoping for Jodie Comer but her snub was not a surprise. Unfortunately.
Very sad for Comer. I think any small chance she had is slipping away.
I am sticking to my theory (clearly partially fuelled by wishful thinking) that she could surprise still considering most of the SAG voters work in TV and she is a TV icon and she also has hometown advantage at the Baftas. If she could score just one or both of those major precursor nominations, I think she could have a fighting chance at the Oscar 5, too.
I will say though now that I have seen the film, I do think a case could be made for a supporting campaign, too. She is barely in the first 90 minutes of the film even though she does dominate the last 60.
I agree with like 100% of your last sentence. I think it would be egregious if she was snubbed if campaigned in Supporting.
She does dominate the last 60 and the film is basically about her. Sure, she’s not the focal point of the first 90, but she’s in many a scene throughout — most of them really. I think she’s IN the movie for a fairly high ratio; which negates a Supporting feel/vibe, for me. It’s close. But while I’d have loved an early Supporting campaign to set things off … she really is Lead and, therefore, a harder task to get the nom, there.
And TRUE about SAG. That will be interesting to see if she pops there. There’s hope yet! LOL
There is just so much of the war / court life nonsense that doesn’t feature her that I could actually justify a supporting campaign. Either way, she is brilliant in the role and would be deserving of an Oscar nomination in either category.
I have nothing against Gaga, she is a good actress / great singer, but I already find it frustrating that her rather uneven performance is the one getting awards traction for a Ridley Scott film this season when Jodie Comer delivered a proper acting masterclass.
Yeah, I’m conflicted on Gaga. On one hand, I thought she was great in the role and lovvvve that her star persona brought people to the theaters — that deserves something! On the other hand, her movie was uneven and I simply think there were better/more deserving contenders … like Comer 🙁 Strong year for actresses, in my mind.
Don’t know why I keep thinking back to when Gaga sang, albeit brilliantly, the national anthem at Biden’s inaguration and then the last concert performance she partnered with Tony Bennett, considering the older crooner is now totally afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Gaga knows how to build a terrific reputation and image. And that helps. And endears her more to the Hollywood community. She knows what it takes to gain respect from them. And that’s something right there.
Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac’s nominations give me LIFE. There’s acting and then the kind of acting masterclass they both delivered in that terrific miniseries. Jessica is just otherworldly and I also hope she’d win everything this year for The Eyes Of Tammy Faye. Unlikely but yeah.
Love that ”Raya and the Last Dragon” got nominated. (Alas, I found ”Encanto” overrated.)
I haven’t seen Encanto yet but I was rather stunned how much I loved Raya in March. It is probably my favourite Disney film since Tarzan (1999) that I saw at 11 so when I was still firmly the target audience.
YES OMG HOW COULD I NOT BE OUTRAGED ASWE ALL SHOULD BY FACT NO LAST DUEL OR HOUSE OF GUCCI AS BIG COBNTENDERS IN GLOBES UP’EM
Compartment #6 over Lamb?
I’ve only heard raves about Compartment No 6., although I was unlucky enough to miss it when it played here.
That makes complete sense. It’s not like the HFPA (or the Academy) really embraces genre stuff (as I’ve understood Lamb is) automatically and Compartment No. 6 is very pleasant, very approachable and very awards voter friendly (along with being very good)
Snoop Dogg’s announcement of the nominees was hilarious as fuck, he even mispronounced Ben Affleck lol
Not sure how much The Globes matter this year but all around pretty good nominations.
I LOVE the love for Jessica Chastain. Her tour de force of a performance in Scenes From A Marriage and her transformative, hilarious, heartbreaking work as Tammy Faye deserve all the awards in the world.
In The Heights was ROBBED. Don’t Look Up, funny, well acted and relevant as it is is also no less than a mess than McKay’s Vice. I’m extremely happy though for Leonardo Dicaprio and Jennifer Lawrence’s nominations. They slayed as did the entire cast.
Extremely annoyed though at the total snub towards Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley and especially Cate Blanchett’s delicious, unforgettable work. She was also the MVP in Don’t Look Up which speaks volumes to her talent. I’m sorry but Ellis in King Richard was in no way better than her in any of her films this year.
Also, happy as I am for Marion Cotillard’s nomination for her haunting work in Annette Adam Driver’s snub hurts. He walked away with the film.
Annette was Adam’s best work this year as well in my opinion so it’s disappointing he’s been snubbed but am happy for Marion.

Awww I’m so happy for Oh Young-Su for Squid Game!!
Also ecstatic for the The Great love
C’mon, it’s a Hunger Games ripoff…
Isn’t Hunger Games just a Battle Royale ripoff?
It’s not lol. But even if it were – the concept isn’t exactly an unpopular one in the first place. It’s the backbone of countless horror movies, for example. But Squid Game was nearly flawlessly executed – much more enjoyable than Hunger Games for me, although that’s understandable because of Hunger Games’s target audience.
Snubbing In the Heights from a musical category is just fucking ridiculous. And I still think Olga Merediz gave one of the best performances of the year. Sigh.
Not that any of these noms will matter. The nominees will now have to dance around the subject and try NOT to talk about them
Olga Merediz was astonishing and truly deserved that nomination. I was also hoping for a nomination in the Best Actress in a Musical / Comedy category for the wonderful Melissa Barrera but I loved that Jennifer Lawrence’s terrific work in Don’t Look Up was recognized.
Adam McKay’s film is entertaining and full of fantastic performances but in no way deserving of being a Best Picture nominee in the Best Musical / Comedy category when In The Heights wasn’t. John M. Chu’s fantastic film should have been nominated for Best Musical at the very least.
Happy for Anthony Ramos’ nomination though. 🙂
No statements thanking the HFPA then? Agree that In The Heights should have been nominated. Fantastic film. Body blow to Jennifer Hudson?
I doubt it. I cover the circuit and all the studios AND stars have been begging sites and publications to omit any mention of Globes from interview questions and articles. Some of them even required such an agreement before scheduling an interview.
Are parties going to be back this year?
That will vary, though no parties for Globe voters. It used to be that plenty of screenings would have a post-show reception, but most have opted out of that this year over COVID safety concerns.
The parties would require a negative test I assume. Was it a lot of fun the Golden Globe party weekend over the years?
And instead of it, to nominate the tuneless and useless Cyrano? UGH
I hope Sasha doesn’t have a meltdown about there being no Jennifer Hudson. I am happy that she and plenty of people loved her performance. But she simply has to realize that many people also found her performance to be all impassioned singing and not expertise thespian skills, regardless of the iconic person she is portraying.
Hudson has always had a deer-in-headlights-look behind her eyes when acting and trying to emote. Yes, the camera caught her crying. Yes, the camera caught her yelling in anguish. But it seems fairly clear to a lot of people that she did not embody Aretha as well as she could have. I think there are many actresses this year who wildly impressed and embodied the character they were portraying.
Maybe the 5 women nominated did not hit the mark for a lot people, as well. But I’ve read an awful lot from people who believe that Hudson’s performance just did not make the mark and, the HFPA agreed.
I guess they couldn’t find any movie stars to announce, so the Globes went for the power of the Dogg. Snoop, that is. What a disaster. There were so many mispronounced names, like KAREN Hinds.
And Ben Affleck which he realised he was mispronouncing and apologised.
And he even corrected himself to get to Karen! He caught his error and made things worse by correcting it. Snoop’s pronunciations were pathetic but hilarious. To be fair to him, I don’t know how to pronounce Ciarán either, so his first attempt might have been correct as far as I know. I just know that the actor’s name is not pronounced Karen!
His pronunciation was hilarious as fuck. The Ben Affleck one killed me but he handled it like a pro lol 😉
Best pronunciation mistake was for 2014 Oscars for. cinematography. The announcer correctly pronounced Ryszard Lenczewski for Ida, and then pronounced Dick Pope for Mr. Turner, Dick Poop.
I will never forget this treasured moment.
Mahershala Ali got a boost as did the two Supporting actors for Belfast. Moreno snubbed. They really, really liked Don’t Look Up. Did not go for Nightmare Alley. Jennifer Hudson snubbed.
They snubbed PT Anderson!!!
Frankly I’m not surprised in the slightest. They’re not really the crowd for this type of movie
Snoop Dogg made a royal mess with pronunciation.
That’s for sure, but the only time he seemed to recognize it was his mispronunciation of Ben Affleck’s last name. I thought that was one of his better attempts.
A boost for Ben Affleck.
Gosh, was really hoping The Last Duel would pop, here. Actually, the HFPA weren’t for Ridley Scott, AT ALL – aside from Gaga.
Leto should have been nominated as well. Affleck probably took his place.
please post nominees. I missed it due to work.
Villeneuve, Campion, Branagh, Gyllenhaal, Spielberg in directing
thank you!
This means Colman needs to be considered in the acting mix
Good. I love a lot of his works, but Licorice Pizza didn’t do it for me.
Still confused by daylight savings?
Hi all the film buffs! Anything with Dwayne Johnstone in for the win!
YES! To Parallel Mothers scoring Score. Tremendously deserved.
But Cruz is toast, she didn’t get the nom here, so even if BAFTA and SAG would come to the rescue… I doubt she would get the nomination at the Oscar. Bardem has a chance, though, but Being the Ricardos missing Drama… not a good sign for him either. Ricardos may score Picture, Actress, Supp. Actor and Original Screenplay nominations at the Oscar, along a couple of technicals (Costume, Make up) but might miss Actor and Director, making it a “filler” Best Picture nominee, with zero chance of winning the big one.
Critics Choice also ignored her. Are Italy, Japan and Iran now locks for the International film nomination?
there’s nothing such as a lock, in International Film. Ever.
Apart from Parasite?
And Roma, and Another Round..
not even so
Yes, the three Scandinavian films might cancel one of them out.
And I hope Iran will not win, though. Farhadi already has two Oscars, the second one totally undeserved, won only because of Trump’s ban
Yeah, The Salesman was mediocre. Toni Erdmann should have won easily. I hated that outcome.
No Thompson but yes to Negga and i’m no fan of Hudson’s performance but thought she at least deserved a GG nod esp over Emma Stone.
Neither Hudson or Lin Manuel attended the GG party events.
I wish this site had a Succession season finale thread because…I have thoughts and theories
Let’s go!
In his own twisted way, Logan was right. Why do his kids think they are entitled to his empire? What have they ever done? Build your own damn pile.
In his worldview, nobody deserves anything, nobody is entitled to anything. You take what you can and it’s yours. If they can’t beat him, then there it is.
I think it’s very likely that it was Tom that told Logan…but don’t discount the possibility that he’s a slight of hand. There’s a pretty clear and believable tract that leads to it being Connor that told Logan. This entire series he’s been disrespected. Made fun of. Never in the know on business. His ‘I AM the eldest son…’ angry speech feeds into this narrative as well. Then when Roman, Ken, and Shiv are in the van on the way to Logan, Roman is on the phone with Connor and says ‘This IS me layering you in, Con…’ and then calls him dumb. It’s very likely it’s Tom…but I think there is a slight chance it’s actually Connor that screwed over his sibs and now has a leg up with dad. Also in the post episode segment, the producers say ‘The implication is that it was Tom’ which is extremely vague. If it’s Tom…why not just flat out SAY it’s Tom at that point?
It’s possible that the writers haven’t yet decided the details and how that will be revealed next season.
Either way I do hope we get more Connor next season. Ruck reminded me a lot of John Cazale at the end of The Godfather Part II. “I was passed over!”
And I totally agree. I told my boyfriend last night during the final scene…’ok I literally hate every one of them in one way or another…especially Logan…but he’s right! They aren’t owed anything…they’re greedy children…’
Excuse me…? Where’s Jennifer Hudson?
She didn’t attend (or campaign) the GG dinner events.
Did anyone ?
Jennifer Hudson needs to take a page from the Daniel Kaluuya/LaKeith Stanfield playbook and slide into the Best Supporting Actress category ASAP for Respect.
Nope, she was the lead 3/4 of the movie. I know the little girl took up a lot of time, but Jhud WAS Aretha.
The snub of Jennifer Hudson only nominating her specific song performance is a bifocal FAIL of Globes intent to have diversity where it needed.
The FACT that Hudson is penultimate stand out to other black nominees that her performance character she acted out was one of major pivotal foundation stone influencers of female blacks means snubbing Hudson rightfully overshadows increasingly pretentious irrelevant globes other black nominees .
If awards show is faur dingkom biut balanced diversity u simply fo NOT snub actress who had by far most challenging role of any of black nominees one who played Aretha Franklin myG-d how ghastly snub.
Time for Globes to reform as someone said here Oscar don’t put stock in Globes I not sure fully bout tjst but Globes don’t deserve have stature in race any more. Not till they grow fuk up!
Snubbing Scott my goodness me snubbing Jodie comer u kidding me ? Snubbing Daniel Craig best modern era Bond by FAR… headlines for Globes DESERVETo be snubs thry are few but boy they are HUUGE!!
Much like I pre empt critics choice nominees I predict similar patterns to snubs cutting down of Ridley Scott ( amusing given some mention Ed to me his leftist in his views but apparently U HAVE TO BE CERTAIN LEVRL OF RADICAL LEFT LEANINGS TO QUALIFY AS A CONTENDER PICKY ANF CHOOSY MUCH GLOBES, CRITICS CHOICE FARCE!!??
Glad ab0ut Mari0n C0tillard f0r Annette ! Annette sh0uld als0 have been up f0r Sc0re 0r S0ng and Adam Driver als0 .
Cotillard was only in barely half the movie. I adore her, but this was not premium Cotillard. Adam Driver did the heavy lifting in this bizarre movie. I wouldn’t have expected any noms for it. I didn’t hate it, but i didn’t love it either.
Initial thoughts:
1. Nail in the coffin for Jennifer Hudson? Probably. She needed a boost here, which I honestly thought she would get.
2. Shocked no Penelope Cruz—starting to think she won’t make the cut at all. Glad for Chastain!
3. I wonder if Cooper Hoffman could sneak into the Oscars. He could get some huge love from sentimental voting—the academy loved his dad. Could be a cool moment. I still need to see LP though.
4. Yikes Tragedy of MacBeth and Nightmare Alley.
5. No idea what to think of the supporting races. Feels like anyone can win. They are really the hardest categories to predict this year.
Cumberbatch can beat Smith? I hope so.
Cumberbatch has had a great year. He’s starring as doctor strange in spider-man nwh. He was in a movie called the courier this year and he’s also nominated for power of the dog.
And The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. Sad, sweet, quirky movie.
So could Garfield. And Dinklage.
DINKLAGE!!!!
I think he is still being underestimated. The film could surprise in BP and he IS beloved. I think Golden Globe + SAG wins could happen and from there the Oscar is not a reach, either.
100% agree. He has flown under the radar perfectly thus far, and now he just needs to come in sneakily and win some big awards if he can.
THIS. Dinklage is absolutely beloved, and it’s not THAT quiet in some circles that Will Smith is NOT
Not for this horrible performance. I love Dinklage, but not this time.
I am expecting Smith for a host of reasons here, but wouldn’t be surprised about Cumberbatch; the way they loved TPOTD.
The Power of the Dog swept the Southeastern Film Critics Association, winning Picture, Directing, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. It was the runner-up in Cinematography and Score as well. What a sweep!
Stop the presses! The Southeastern Film Critics Association has spoken? Cancel the Oscars! 😉
yea rrrright they strike rate not what it used to be ha ha ha ha…
Spare me the misguided sarcasm attempts! The Southeastern Film Critics Association has been around for almost 30 years. It’s one of the few minor critics’ groups that were presented in the last century, so yeah… it means more than what a group founded five years ago has to say.
That good point I thought song not being sercastic ! No seriously I fell that one ey?
Sorry, I can’t take the SFCA seriously because there are a multitude of regional critics awards, most of which copycat each other’s winners. It’s an echo chamber.
That true also two sides to view
Critics are supposed to be so opinionated, but during awards season, they go into some herd mentality and jump on a bandwagon. It’s boring and unimaginative.
exactly
I can’t even take P0wer 0f the D0g seri0usly ! Except f0r the bull castrati0n scene which is classic !
So far, the only other regional critics award to give Power of the Dog Best Picture was the New York Film Critics Online.
DC chose Belfast, Detroit chose Cyrano, Boston and New York chose Drive My Car.
S0rry they didn’t n0minate D0 n0t f0fget me Br0nc0 Henry as Best S0ng !
Plus it’s been it in in various other Critics groups associations as well. I hope Guilds follow. Champion’s extraordinary picture deserves every awards attention possible.
From the trailers, Licorice pizza looks like it will be a fun movie to go see.
It’s a lot of fun! But awards?
Several days ago I recommended here My Suny Maad and I do it again. This is a sensation!
Critics choice nominations minutes away. available on KTLA morning news live stream
Gaga and Leto was the best thing about House of Gucci, but Leto wasn’t nominated. Encanto will win animated feature, i still gotta see Encanto. King Richard is a tad overrated but i did enjoy the film. Belfast is in my top ten favorite movies of 2021 and so is the remake to west side story, I’m glad Zegler got in.
Zegler in an instant star.
What a perfect best international lineup. Happy that Compartment No 6 made it in. I still don’t get why Spain didn’t submit Parallel Mothers.
The Lost Daughter just missed best drama. Too bad. Probably came 6th.
Thrilled for Coda again.
I don’t get the love for Coda. It was an entertaining little film but so conventional and full of cliches.
How are people going to see Coda if they don’t have Apple TV.
They will download it
You can get a free trial, and binge Ted Lasso as well.
Exact same thoughts for me. Enjoyed it but the many cliches took me out of it pretty much completely, in terms of emotional impact. And I almost always love this type of movie, so this was not a reaction I had expected…
No nomination for Jennifer Hudson for best actress in ‘Respect’? Aretha Franklin in rolling in her grave. Is this how the Globes wanna prove they are not racists anymore?
How does not nominating Jennifer Hudson equal racism?
There are several POC nominated for lots of awards from TV to Film. Sounds like you are just upset for her being snubbed.
No black actress nominated in lead performances when we had amazing lead performances by black actresses. The Globes just need to end already
On the hand, 3 of the 5 nominees for Best Actor in a Drama are black.
And 3 of the 5 nominees for Supporting Actress are performers of color.
These people want 3 out of 5 nominees in EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY to be black. They should stop whining already.
That still doesn’t equal racism. Again lots of POC made it into several other categories.
The actress categories were jam packed and hard to crack. The only black actresses that had a real chance in lead was Jennifer Hudson and m Tessa Thompson, and Halle Berry had a very small chance. That’s about it. Let’s not pretend there were so many, and let’s also not pretend that they are top tier performances. With so many POC nominated this argument of racism is about the silliest thing to bring up. Golden Globes have always been the most diverse in their nominees more than any other group. The argument has never been about their nominees, the argument about racism has been about the people that vote for the award—just a reminder.
I think the Globes for the most part did well this year with their nominees.
12 black, 7 Hispanic, 1 Asian and 1 middle eastern individuals nominated.
For what it’s worth, the Globes did nominate Hudson for her song, ”Here I Am,” to ”Respect.”
In no way nominated Hudson for an average performance would make them not racists. Jennifer Hudson has always been an ASTONISHING singer, a pretty likable presence and a real life survivor of major family trauma. Having said all that, none of that makes her an actress worthy of major awards attention. She didn’t deserve to sweep the entire season in the Best Supporting category along the Oscar for Dreamgirls next to Cate Blanchett (Notes on a scandal) and Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) and definitely doesn’t deserve to be nominated or win any major award this year for her simply solid turn in Respect. She approached Aretha (no pun intended) respectfully and delivered an expectedly solid and occasionally moving turn, impessive mostly for her amazing vocals.
BUT… EXCEPTIONAL singing and simply adequate acting doesn’t equal acting worthy of serious awards attention.
We indeed had so many astonishing performances from black actresses this year once again, Tessa Thompson in Passing being a successful example. Jennifer Hudson isn’t.
Cynthia Erivo (who ironically portrayed Aretha this year too in Genius) sings AND acts brilliantly. Gaga has great vocals and is also a really talented actress. Jennifer Hudson has vocals to be in awe of and acts okay I guess…? In a year of so many mesmerizing female leading turns being left out, from actresses coming from Spain (Penelope Cruz in Parallel Mothers) to Norway (Renate Reinsve in The Worst Person In The World) leaving out a textbook Oscar-bait and in no way impressive acting-wise turn from Hudson in Respect doesn’t make an awards group racist. Golden Globe voters have been racist and corrupt for years and years but leaving out Hudson this year for Respect isn’t an effective example. I’ve never seen anything awards worthy in Jennifer’s acting. Her singung on the other deserves every award in the world. Some people are great at both (again, Cynthia Erivo being one of them, Gaga as well regardless of whether her haters want to admit it or not). Jennifer isn’t among them. Her stage presence when she sings give me chills, her acting never even slightly impressed me.
Yes, by not nominating an undeserving performance by a Black actress.
I shocked apalled but not for first time i think lot of us are underwhelmed by the outcome of nominees…yes..let move on from the shooting..to depressing reality that as i predicted once you start to work out the psyche in awards season well as saying in ‘Avatar’ goes ” you got to play by the rules ..Panodra rules!’
So to the case sadly for what will mark only marginally more memorable at best oscar season (likely) outcome..’ you GOT TO PLAY BY THE RULES WHEN PREDICTING AWARDS SEASON OUTCOMES- AWARDS SEASON (SOCIALIST RADICAL LEFT) RULES
Flaws galore in the noms however..i sure i not alone:
1. King Richard deserved more nominations…but good see more than just Will Smith getting nomination
2. Time for the Globes to modernise PROPERLY they are a) paying lip service to likes of Dune, snub for West Side Story screenplay was unjustified considering the ORIGINAL broadway musical has not been adapted before (remember the prior motion piucture classic did NOT adapt the original play this kinds a big deal)
b) by undermining the big blockbuster drawcards that also had huge critical acclaim (AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN ) they are going down the treacherous road of abandoning the traditional audience film base and within their peers which just stinks like a skunk that been laying on the road for a decade by the time it found on side of the rd it reeks like %%#@!!
c) Save for the questionable creativity (honestly black and white in 19sixty’s/70’s setting) of despite being a uplifting story , is not NOT unprecedented nor will it pull in the crowds at the box office. Overrated i will NOT be seing it i dont need to to know despite it big cast this is the BEST opetion increasing bloodsucking Globes can deliver? i not only one losing respect for them.
3. No French Dispatch, no NO TIME TO DIE, no nightmare alley, undermining of Cyrano which deserved more love clearly too ‘antiquated’ for the naive chaotic voting systems of the Globes, and i insistent on this at the VERY LEAST surely surely! long overdue a actor who plays Bond arguably more demanding role than any of other contenders both physically in nature and various tones and upmost intensity that was halmark and grit and hard edge of Craig’s now past tenure as Bond…it criminal that he did NOT get best actor nomination.
NO TIME TO DIE IS DOOMED NOT COS IT NOT GOOD ENOUGH BUT COS THE LEVEL OF BIAS TOWARDS THE YOUNGER DEMOGRAPHIC IS BEARING RESEMBLANCE OF ALARMING IGNORANCE TO BROADER SPECTRUM OF WHAT MAKES FILMS GREAT HOW ELSE YOU EXPLAIN DUNE THAT I ADMIT SHOULD BEEN NOMINATED MORE IS SO LOPSIDED IT GETS EVERYTHING AND SEMI TRADITIONAL CONTEMPORARY NO TIME TO TIE 25TH BOND A FEAT SHOULD BE RECOGNISED IN AWARDS SEASON WITHOUT QUESTION…FOR LET US NOT FORGET AWARDS SEASON LONG INDULGED IN I OWE YOU’S AND ‘PAYOFF’ AFTER SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE 2 COME TO MND LORD OF THE RINGS AND GODFATHER SO NO THERE NO EXCUSE TO OMIT, UNDERMINE AND PISS ON MERITS OF 25TH BOND AS GLOBES HAD..WELL THEY CAN GO FUK THEMSELVES!
The last few esp of Bond films have lead the way in high stakes multi leveled drama in filmmaking..complexities in shooting, vast scope of locations, elaborate, memorable cinematography..i watching Spectre atm..and to dismiss it as just another fan boy try hard contender is utter bullshit…honestly i at point i gonna find a way to get in ear of those connected to the Globes tell them how they are ocmpromising what little integrity in public eye they have left (if i could be bothered)
4. NO ANJELICA HUSTON and..was RESPECT that bad a film really? I not been able to see it for usual reason of bias of releases in awards season to those in UK AND US long before Australia!! but honestly? that is also outrageous! and film snubbed? give me a fukin break!
5. I take note in possible blow to Power of the Dog chances kirsten dunst who many hyped up did not get globe nom..and yet with Belfast it landed more decisively for acting nominations where many expected it to.
Would i prefer Belfast to Power of the Dog to win? of course i would but would many of us strongly prefer love to see change of mentality of Globes to not give in to powers that be of sociological moronity that plaguing and tainting yet another awards season? i guarantee lot of us would love to seen surprise of no time to die get more noms..than just song..spare me..thankfully pple have matured of silent majority it FACT who once engaged with globes lot more now just those us online here who engage everyone else doesn’t care it biggest albatross awards season has created for itself..and it become absolute out of control monster..sure no you will disagree but how can those who do support this narrow minded..public sidelining approach attitude awards season has become?
This is how i would done picture noms for Globes and oh byu the way it time for the Globes to expand to more than 5 slots for director, and picture! so antiquated that only part of the problem in perception of the Globes..ever shrinking Globes..tailor made for sociologist idealists never mind they the minority of film audiences..
This would improve it ratings vastly well let notr forget in massive farce Globes not broadcasting live no actual show they fuked it up last year for this year broadcast wise right?
Picture should been with 7 categories expanded:
1. No Time to Die- 7 noms inc picture, director, screenplay, actor obviously very limited arts noms globes have
2. West Side Story- 7 noms inc what nominated for also with script and a song for crying out loud!! how be no song nominated?
3. King Richard- six noms inc pic, director, screenplay, actor, supp actress and other noms it has
4. Dune- 5 noms inc pic, director, script, and one extra arts noms what got nomnated for
5. Respect- not been biopic before on Aretha Franklin maybe it was bit overlong maybe was bit convoluted but still credit to filmmaker much deserved bringing queen of soul only one having courage to do it for first time way it been done ought be recognised: 5 noms inc pic, director, script, actress, song
Six. Power of the Dog 4 noms inc pic, director, actor, supp actor
7. Cyrano- 4 noms inc pic, script, score, actor
Believe it or not people…i believe Campion should win best director but that the limit that far as most major win the film should have director not picture..picture i love be upset it wqont be West Side Story let give to uplifting King Richard not easy story to bring to life mind you based what actuall been nominated..not what i think
If they didn’t nominate your favorite black actor, they are racists. If they nominate the black actor you dislike, they are woke liberal nonsense. Gimme a break.
Drive my car could win international feature film
It sounds like the best non-anime Japanese film in ages.
Koreeda and Sono did many great films
They have, but the Japanese industry has been in a slumber, however, it definitely seems to be waking up after the Korean industry fired their shot across the bow of Asian cinema.
Will CC noms stream live?
Goldeb Globes, as always, my main obstacle between my personal tastes and the Oscars. My hopes on international Academy voters.
Nightmare alley shut out. That was one of the frontrunners earlier this year.
so, only 1 nom for Ridley Scott’s films in 2021, for Gaga. also, no Nightmare Alley in sight
Dune!
YES!! So happy for Denis Villeneuve’s astonishing film and his nomination in particular. I was all in for a Rebecca Ferguson nomination in the Supporting Actress category but alas.
Yeah, I really wish that had become a thing… She more than deserved it!
The genre bias are repulsive at this point. Acting-wise she deserved at the very least to land a nomination but “oh wait, that can’t happen because it’s a sci-fi blockbuster epic”. Such bullshit. She’s so great though always – she doesn’t need any fucking award or nomination to prove it. Same goes for actresses like Elisabeth Moss, Florence Pugh or Riley Keough, fascinating talents that constantly challenge themselves with risky and interesting material.
The genre bias has always been repulsive to me. So many of my favorites have been underawarded because of it… (Sci-fi and comedy, primarily… Also some animated and documentary titles that should have been up for Best Picture. Not to mention how even the ones that get through in that category are almost always ignored in the acting categories… See Amy Adams in Arrival and a host of others!)
Indeed, as long as we remember that Oscar nominations are no measure of their worth and talent, we shouldn’t care too much either way – or at all. 🙂 It’s the repetitiveness of the whole thing that gets a bit too frustrating at some point, for me. Every time with the no acting nominations routine from them, and so on…
Negga in, Dowd OUT. If only someone had said this all along…oh wait…
My thoughts
Belfast and the power of the dog leading the nominations make sense
Ridley Scotts two films snubbed. He will never get an award and this was his chance. House of Gucci and the last duel good films too.
Can’t wait to see being the Ricardos. A film about Lucille ball and desi Arnaz is great.
I’m happy with the no time to die nomination in original song
I’m happy with the French dispatch nomination in original score
Snoop Dogg reading off the nominations was horrid.
Cyrano definitely worth the nomination. Looking forward to seeing that
King Richard is a little overrated
Campion, Spielberg, Braganh, Villeneuve and McKay what a great director line up
Respect shut out, that’s not good.
I’m actually glad that this show will not be televised. On towards the critic’s choice, sag and oscar
McKay didn’t get nominated for Director. Maggie Gyllenhaal (”The Lost Daughter”) did.
No Expanse, but no The Boys either in Drama Series. Gotta take the bad with the good news. Boys was eligible, otherwise Emmy would’ve never nominated it this summer. This is Us has ample reason to be perturbed when a foreign language series gets in above it.
why do you dislike The Boys?
It’s not even in the same league as The Expanse. Boys is a gorefest for gore’s sake. A graphic novel done by 2 guys you wouldn’t even be able to pick out of a lineup. The Expanse is Game of Thrones in its prime in space. It’s a 5-time Hugo Award nominee. But the Boys is flashier, flavor of the moment BS. It’s style vs. supreme substance. Saw a couple of season 2 episodes and it just wasn’t for me. But I blame Amazon, too, for forsaking The Expanse in its Emmy campaign, saddening since they rescued it from the SyFy cancellation heap 3 years ago.
I haven’t seen The Expanse but I’ve obviously heard great things. I actually do really like The Boys though
The Boys was not eligible.
I have a feeling that the lineup in the Best Actress in a Drama category will be the lineup for Best Leading Actress at the Oscars as well and I gotta say if this is the case I’d be fine with it. Alana would be also SO deserving but yeah, other than that this lineup would be dope imho. Anyone other than Jennifer Hudson for Respect I’m fine with.
Jennifer is such a likable person and a tremendous singer but this doesn’t make her average acting worthy of major awards attention let alone in a year that will of so many exceptional female leading turns (Penelope Cruz in Parallel Mothers, Tessa Thompson in Passing, Jodie Comer in The Last Duel are probably all about to be left out).
In original song, replace Dos Oruguitas, Down to Joy (by anti-vaxxer Van Morrison) and Here I Am Singing My Way Home with So May We Start (Annette), Home All Summer (In the Heights) and Your Song Saved My Life (Song 2) and you have the alpha and omega of movie tune kickassery.
Mitchells Versus The Machines is a surprise snub for animation. Better than the other nominees.
Belfast and the power of the dog lead with 7. Belfast was good enough for 7. Luck of the irish
Did they snub Titane crap or did I dream it?
Yes CODA and DUNE! Did they not see Nightmare Alley?
For a sec I through Penelope Cruz had a shot at the nomination. Not looking good for her.
Nor for Jennifer Hudson.
HOT DIGGITY, DUNE MADE IT. (Yes I was shouting 😀 ) They’re coming not just for 30% of the Oscars (like Andrew Garfield said in The Social Network); they’re coming for *everything*.
Not quite the strong Globes showing something like Ricardos needed to contend.
Why? Two acting nominations and a screenplay nom (in the globes combined category) is a great showing.
It could have done better, and this was the place to make that case. I’m scratching it as a chance at winning BP.
I don’t think it was ever in it to win the top category but a nomination is certainly likely. Globes don’t have design categories where it will likely feature at the Oscars. I know some ppl are predicting Arianda and Simmons to show up…but supporting actress is overly stacked and Simmons has a role that he could nail in his sleep (not saying he’s bad, he’s fantastic. But it’s nothing new for him). Still in my BP predictions
THE POWER OF THE DOG leads with 7!!!
Belfast has 7, too. Gonna be an epic battle.
Oh right, it has Song.
We are back to where we started? BP fight between Belfast and POTD?
Trifecta:
Belfast
The Power of the Dog
nothing else, right?
The Power of the Dog has more nods though! 7 to 6!
NOPE! 7 to 7!
They have 3 acting each and the Big 3, plus Dog has Music, right?
And Belfast song!
