Well, despite being shunned mostly by Hollywood and the awards apparatus, the HFPA will still hand out their chosen winners for 2021. We will be posting our predictions before Sunday but you have a chance to test your predicting skills with our contest! Thanks to Marshall Flores for putting it together.
For their part, the Globes will announce on Sunday at 6pm. Press release below.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced today that the winners of the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards® will be revealed on January 9, 2022, from the Beverly Hilton at 6 p.m. PT. In addition to recognizing 2021’s best in film and television, the Golden Globe Awards will shine a light on the long-established philanthropy work of the HFPA, showcasing a range of grantees during the program.
Over the past 25 years, the HFPA has donated $50 million to more than 70 entertainment-related charities, film restoration, scholarship programs and humanitarian efforts; incredibly impactful organizations, many of whom were hit hard over the last two years as a result of the pandemic.
During the program, Kyle Bowser, Senior Vice President of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, will further discuss the “Reimagine Coalition,” a joint five-year initiative to increase diversity, equity and inclusion across the global entertainment industry. Each year the HFPA and the NAACP Hollywood Bureau will collaborate on, fund, and support a series of trailblazing initiatives, with the overall goals of ensuring visibility of projects from artists of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds; increasing diverse representation in the industry; and building pathways to inclusion for young artists and journalists of color.
Because of the current pandemic surge, health and safety remain a top priority for the HFPA. There will not be an audience on January 9th, and the following precautions are being taken for select members and grantees who will be in the room:
Proof of vaccination and booster shot, along with a negative PCR test within 48 hours, is required for entry;
All guests will be masked and socially distanced at all times while inside the ballroom;
There will be no red carpet. Media credential requests for this event will not be accepted;Over the last eight months, the HFPA has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom addressing ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership and more. In October, the HFPA admitted its largest and most diverse class to date with 21 new journalists, all of whom were first-time Golden Globe voters. A full list of the HFPA’s reforms can be found HERE.
Bob Saget has died.
Man oh man. It’s been a rough week! 65 is dang too young!
Anyone have any idea how/where to watch this year?
It’s not being streamed. But only a private affair.
that’s 6PM PACIFIC/9 ET
It sucks that the golden globes can’t be on this year. They were good movies nominated and the performances were decent especially year end movies and fall festival and fall films. Stupid Hollywood politics they need to nominate movies and tv shows people I have seen. Example: respect, dune, Spider-Man no way home, no time to die
The Academy is under no obligation to nominate anyone for any reason

Doubtful
Troy Kotsur has been backed off the map with Australian bookmaking sites. He was 10-1 but since ballots closed, he was been backed into 5/2.
”Belfast” didn’t ask to be the front-runner. I feel pundits dubbed it that because it won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and a number of past recipients have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars: ”Slumdog Millionaire,” ”The King’s Speech,” ”Green Book,” ”Nomadland,” etc. But many have won the TIFF award and NOT won Best Picture: ”Silver Linings Playbook,” ”The Imitation Game,” ”La La Land,” ”Jojo Rabbit,” etc. So it’s a mixed blessing being dubbed the front-runner; it sets up expectations for a movie, and if they’re not met, there’s nowhere to go but down.
In the wake of the critics’ prizes, ”The Power of the Dog” is the real front-runner. And calling ”Belfast” the front-runner seems like it’s being used as a weapon to bash Branagh’s movie. Clearly, ”The Power of the Dog” is the critics’ darling. Only time will tell if the industry agrees. ”Boyhood,” ”Brokeback Mountain” and ”L.A. Confidential” swept many of the critics’ prizes, but fell short at Academy time.
That Dawg wont hunt and will trip up on the final hurdle of the pref ballot
Those blue collar, working folk in the Guilds will never go for that
I think dune has the potential to upset Belfast in motion picture drama
Globes won’t be livestreamed: https: // deadline. com /2022 /01 /golden-globes-no-livestream-nbc-hfpa-1234905661/
So they can tweet out the winners like LAFCC and pretend the voting is happening in real time.
Finally watched Belfast. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I’m not entirely sure why Hinds is considered a frontrunner (if he and Dornan are competing against each other – which I’m not sure I entirely understand – Dornan seems like the obvious choice, I thought he was wonderful, probably should be going Lead along with Balfe, although I may be biased because he’s just so dreamy…).
Biggest critique is, I couldn’t help but feel at times that I was watching a fan-made youtube video tribute to Van Morrison; the music was honestly pretty distracting. I think the black and white worked pretty well, took me a while to get used to the odd cinematography and camera angles but they ended up working for me too, and Balfe was also pretty captivating. I’ll admit movies that center on child performances don’t usually hold my attention that well, but it actually went by incredibly quickly for me. The central performance and final product were very charming, even if eye-rollingly on the nose a bit too often. IMO It doesn’t hold a candle to Power of the Dog or The Lost Daughter (my top two currently), though it’s hard to compare them all; I think that the awards expectations and frontrunner status in particular are doing it a big disservice (but that’s usually the case with any frontrunner) … I think it’s a worthy screenplay and acting contender
Belfast was the shortest of the nominated films but more of a biopic on Kenneth braganhs life
mmm… gut feelings I am having lately.
“Don’t Look Up” is the dark horse at the race. It may win SAG Ensemble and GG Comedy/Musical + Screenplay and WGA… not my pick, but the film is HOT in the right moment, to achieve these accolades. At this point, I’d say McKay is likely to be nominated for the DGA, and probably the film may score well at the BAFTA as well… with all this, I don’t discard that it would win Picture+Original Screenplay+Film Editing+Song.
I feel some HUGE snub coming… maybe Kidman and anything Ricardos? maybe Belfast surprisingly lacking any acting nom? Maybe King Richard underperforming and scoring only a nom for Smith? Something that we’re all taking for granted and that looks locked…
I still can’t see “Drive my car” as being the Foreign Film that could. At this point, many are predicting it, to go up to directing and screenplay noms. Even Best Picture. I just… can’t. It seems too small and long, to pull that off… 3 hours of subtitles, I wonder how many AMPAS members are going to go through that and how many of them are going to give it #1 votes.
… and I am growing in my feeling that “The Good Boss” can even win the International film… I haven’t seen it, I am not even attracted by it. But it has been HUGE wherever it went (all time record of Goya nominations, for example) and it is a film that peers have loved to death (even if reviews aren’t that good). It’s a year for satire, and this one has Bardem’s charisma as campaigning force…
The idea of Adam McKay being nominated for Best Director 3 times in a row is depressing
I hear you. He shouldn’t be. He only deserved it, for “The Big Short”, in my opinion. I preferred him in “Talladega Nights”, than in “Vice” or “Don’t Look Up”, but at this point, I think he may be undeniable for nominations at Screenplay, Directing and Producing, this year… the film is making not waves, but tsunamis.
Even one time was one time too much.
Nah. West Side Story is locked for the Comedy/Musical award and Garfield is locked for Comedy Actor.
I could only see Don’t Look Up taking Screenplay and Lawrence winning Actress since there isn’t a clear favorite in those categories.
just saw WSS and it’s a masterpiece. It should be winning Best Picture and Director…
HAHA , what a total surprise ..I knew you’d say that cos that is the usual response when people finally get to see it …it was definately mine
The problem is that folks have a cynicall view of that movie due to it being a remake ..they have seen the original and don’t expect Spielberg’s version to be much different ; but when they actually see it are overawed by it …it’s magnificant and the highlight was ”AMER-ICA” , but the whole movie was great
I think it will win BP by default as there are two weak fronttrunners ; and Speilberg may even win BD (he deserves it ) moreover, it’s a movie that will appeal to the over 50s crowd that are typical oscar voters with its ode to nostalgia
Finally.
Bogdanovich where is your Oscar ? Rest in peace and thank you very very much .
BP Drama: Coda

The Oscar Expert and his brother Bro debate their Golden Globe predictions …
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQICZR6IehM
These two were very good and I’d wager their predictions are accurate ..the only one I’d quibble with is their choice of Encanto over Flee in Animated and I’d go for Beyonce over Billy Elish in best song , partly due to the fact that it’s movie is going to receive a few oscar noms and also because ”no time to die ” is not up to the standard of the usual James Bond songs
Sorry to be a kill
Joy but so far what I predicted that already predetermining utterly predictable underwhelming outcomes ( most likely anyway).. is coming true sadly:
1. We all knew the sociological misguided idealists of radical politically correct abusers would pressure the awards season key presentations and precursors to go down the path of anti genre, anti – visionary, anti- original, and above all anti- film going public it going down this path again.
2. What some may underestimated however are eerie parallels btw the ultra constraints and compromises by this time last year that history would repeat a year ltr. We can NOW add Sundance film festival on scrap heap as far as attendances in person this I’s a HUGE headache nightmare yet again for awards season…the more festivals screener in person unable to be attended traditional way ..mote limited more biased and excessive e favouritism to lesser cared for film contenders more broadly.
3. Palm dior, Cannes, Sundance, bfca going online globes been tainted already as no actual show cos other stuff ups. What next ?
HOW in INTEREST OF PRESERVATION OF FUKIN COMMON SENSE IS IT VIABLE, JUSTIFIED FOR THE BETTERMENT OF DETERIORATING RESOECTSBILITY AND REGARD BY FILM GOING SILENT MAJORITY ALL BUT ABANDONED AWARDS SEASON AS A WHOLE IS GONNA SERVE AWARDS SEASON SINKING REPUTATION WELL LET ALONE GUILDS AND ACADEMY ..TO RUN ANY AWARDS SEASON ?
“Against the power of Covid ala Omnicron ..there can be no victory” …
“we must respect the power of covid or embrace our awards seasons own destruction”
Well ok I couldn’t help myself lol we all know where I adapted this from?
Saruman’s evil ways trying to coerce and intimidate Gandalf into joining him and Sauron.
But he has a point…there lot truth to this. As such I see no point making predictions. Look might well accept Omnicron is still threat even those double Vaxed. Arguably it impacted integrity and capability of arts industry ESPECIALLY motion picture awards season more profoundly than it has since WWII.
There can be no clear thinkning clarity by eventual voters of whoever contenders are.
I will only care AFTER Oscar noms announced. But frankly until then I not doing any more predictions what point ? Just gonna be exactly like lasyvyear half baked mediocrity suffocated by manipulative exploitative social media influencers clearly exploiting pandemic and awards season STUBBORN UNWILLINGNESS to CANCEL EVERYTHING UNTIL omnicron settles down.
Pandemic has taken awards season and at point of mincing it through a meat grinder.
NO awards season must be postponed …time for common sense to prevail… I make one more prediction…
Equally low viewership regardless if events held online like last year? And we kiss goodbye regrettably to Dune , Last Duel , West Side Story, House of Gucci, and King Richard good bye almost as direct result of this far too compromised tainted awards season thanx to covid and stupid unsanitary to try force through a awards season that frankly has lost too much skin in this game after ( mostly) several years of awards season key show outcome disappointments..
.look at ratings they bloody well DO MATTER if u dismiss them u DONT care bout academy relevance or irrefutable fact I stated soooo many times history proves beyond doubt …that AMPAS was founded by working class the common public folk NOT for extreme left radical obscure onlie elitists …. accept omnicron here several states in US are undervaccinated.. Biden failed ro follow his election promises eirh action and as result it NOT in worlds interest have awards season that clearly been shredded jeopardised by covid too much already.
We can’t postpone awards season every winter because of Covid though. Situation is tough now but it will likely get much better by the time the Oscars come around in March.
maybe not but ask yourself..could it NOT make a difference to outcome of main contenders and order they prioritised in terms of key indicartor awards recogition? is not possible consider..that let face it certain states in US have slow double dose rate and what to say key awards season voters for bfca, guilds, academy, bafta vote could be compromised just for next 5 months to postpone..thereby not enabvling true repersntation who wins the awards?
Sir this is a Wendy’s.
I think the Austrian film is the dark horse in international . Go Chastain and the lost daughter .
It wasn’t nominated for the Globe.
IAIW (In an ideal world)….
Picture: Dune
Actor: Smith
Actress: Stewart
Comedy/Musical: None (I wanted In the Heights, but I’ll pick WSS)
Actor: Ramos
Actress: Stone
S. Actor: Smit-McPhee
S. Actress: Dunst
Director: Villeneuve
Screenplay: Being the Ricardos
Music: Dune
Song: No Time to Die
Animated: None
Foreign: Lamb, but in lieu of that, Drive My Car
I could see them going rogue with Dune BP/BD a la The Revenant & 1917 to shake the race up. Who knows. King Richard to address the diversity issue? It’s very hard to predict.
The only way the GGs could shake up this year’s race would be by giving awards to Mahershala Ali, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Cooper Hoffman, Ruth Negga, Ben Affleck, Maggie Gyllenhaal, CODA and tick, tick…BOOM! And even then, it would probably be more of a footnote than a game changer.
Your ideal world is not my ideal world.
I wouldn’t call vote for most of these, and some (like your actor in a drama and screenplay winners in an ideal world) are absolutely terrible.
I think the Golden Globes will vote their own idiosyncratic way and just pick what they love. They don’t have a history of copycatting the major critics groups, and I doubt they’ll start now. (Meantime, the Broadcast Film Critics make no bones about trying to match and predict the Academy Awards.) However, the Golden Globes do have 20 new members, so who knows how that’ll affect the outcome?
One big factor that brought down the Golden Globes was a lack of diversity. Reportedly, the HFPA hasn’t had a black member in years … until just recently. Which is ironic, considering it’s possible that the Globes has a slightly better record in recognizing diversity than the Oscars. The Globes gave Best Actor Drama to Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington before these two won the leading prize at the Oscars. The Globes also gave its Best Actress Drama prize to Whoopi Goldberg (”The Color Purple”) in 1986 – it would take the Academy another 15 years before Halle Berry won. Andra Day, who won last year’s Best Actress Drama, became the 2nd black actress to win that category. Plus, Angela Bassett (”What’s Love Got to Do With It”) won the Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical, back in 1994.
Nope, I think the Globes will be very reserved in their choices ..they don’t want any controversies .. I doubt there’l be any wild cards at all
There are always surprises at the Golden Globes. Who predicted Andra Day and Jodie Foster’s wins last year? Aaron Taylor-Johnson? … Oh, well, we’ll find out Sunday!
This is not a typical year as they are on probation, so to speak, and they don’t want anything controversial
I bet that the bookies favorites are about right with no upsets ..I really hope so or I’ll lose my money
TPOTD sweeps North Carolina with 6 including BP and BD.I think it’s the 14th BP win.

Most Disappointing Film
Winner: “Don’t Look Up”
These critics awards mean nothing, and I don’t know why we care. The only ones that actually matters are NY, LA and the National one, but only because they generate headlines on Variety, Deadline, EW, etc.
You’re right, don’t know why we care about Awards on Awards Daily. Silly me.
I don’t need to spell it out do I? Momentum, awards narrative, some groups having very good correlation with eventual Oscar wins, use in the Oscar campaigns, etc etc.
Oscars aren’t the only reason people are invested in the awards season.
I actually think West Side Story could have a really good day with Globes. Walking in it is at least top 2 if not the frontrunner for musical, musical actress and supporting actress and if they really like it they could give it director too…
Drama is a bit more tough, do they sweep power of the dog, sweep Belfast, split director and picture up between the 2 of them, is this where Will Smith finally makes a stand or does Cumberbatch continue winning? Etc etc there are so many different ways things could go and that is pretty exciting!
Supporting Actor is also pretty exciting, I am actually predicting Kotsur here but it could be almost any of them (not Affleck)
watching WSS with a friend, tomorrow… mixed feelings about it, beforehand… not the biggest Spielberg fan, you know.
So… following my getting up to date… just finally checked out “The Last Duel”. Pretty good, for sure. Masterpiece? No. But the last fourth of the movie, is frankly great. All actors are extremely good, and yes, Comer should be in contention for a nomination… win? I still prefer Cruz’s performance. I wouldn’t mind too much, if “The Last Duel” makes a surprise splash in the nominations for Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor (Affleck!), Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Score, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume, Make Up and Sound… but it looks dead in the water already…
TLD will absolutely not make any “surprise splash” in any category.
Such a shame. I’d have it nommed for Picture, Director, Actress (win), Editing, Production Design, Costumes, Hair/Make-Up, Sound, Score.
I think Driver was more impressive than Affleck (and I’m not a big Driver stan). I’m not sure why Affleck had to go platinum, completely distracting to me. I found his performance perfectly adequate, nothing particularly noteworthy. Comer was stellar. The movie itself should definitely be up for Best Picture.
I think Belfast is a winner in motion picture drama
I think west side story or licorice pizza is a winner in motion picture musical or comedy
The acting races are pretty competitive this year.
Director goes to Jane campion, braganh or Paul Thomas Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson who’s not nominated?
Maybe Spielberg then
By the way, National Society will meet and announce on Saturday. This has always been one of my favourite Critics groups. Drive my Car looks like their logical choice this year but I guess Parallel Mothers could also show up here and there.
Parallel Mothers’ indicator of some surprise showing on nomination morning, would be the BAFTAs… if they love it, it may score 2 nominations at least at the Oscars (Actress, Score)… if they pass, I would be in shock if PM has ANY single nomination.
And I am starting to fear that “The Good Boss” might be our 2021 International Film winner.
I haven´t seen “The Big Boss” but I´m really crossing my fingers for “Drive my Car” – and if that one loses (which will probably be the case) I would also be happy for “The Worst Person in the World”.
By the way, I just checked the scene in Pain & Glory you were talking about, it reminded me on the meta-plays á la Godard. Agree, it´s a great ending, I will have to see the whole film again someday – almost forgot about it (I´ve seen probably too many films last year).
The Good Boss will not get a nomination.
key words are “I fear”
They have no correlation with the Oscars whatsoever, just great taste. They have the best winners and are probably the best critics group.
Yes, great taste should be supported! 😉
All 3 big critics’ groups going for Drive My Car would be pretty surprising.
Maybe, but it looks like a logical pick for them. They are usually very open-minded towards foreign language films and I somehow believe they will not go for TPOTD (even though this would also be an obvious pick based on its critical acclaim).
Maybe they’ll pull out something new like Titane or Parallel Mothers or Petite Maman or Happening!
I take every bet against them going for Titane, but Parallel Mothers or Petite Maman could be their surprise choice, I agree!
I don’t think they’re going with critics favorites. Let’s remember the CC and GG would take place on the same day. They were competing with each other.
CC have been postponed until jan 30th
That’s why I said “would”. The announcement came on Dec 22. The GG final voting began on Dec 17.
How is this gonna happen? No presenters, no celebrities…
Final domestic numbers in for Warners’s disastrous theatrical/day-and-date BS w/HBOMax:
1. Dune $107.2m
2. Godzilla v. Kong $100.6m
3. Space Jam: A New Legacy $70.5m
4, The Conjuring 3 $65.6m
5. The Suicide Squad $55.8m
6. Wonder Woman 1984 $46.4m
7. Tom and Jerry $46.1m
8. Mortal Kombat $42.2m
9. The Matrix: Resurrections $32m (still playing)
It will basically be an email
This could really go several ways!
Belfast winning Picture, Screenplay and an acting (Hinds or Dornan – have a feeling!)
Belfast winning only Picture.
Belfast somehow getting blanked (where TPOTD or LP get Screenplay).
TPOTD winning Picture, Director, maybe an acting, Screenplay, Score.
TPOTD only getting Director or Screenplay, etc.
West Side Story winning Picture, maybe Director, Supp. Actress.
West Side Story somehow getting blanked for DLU and someone else getting Supp. Actress.
I see Dune getting Score.
Encanto gets Animated.
I’ll say No Time to Die for Song.
Definitely Smith vs. Cumberbatch.
Garfield vs. DiCaprio (if they lovvve DLU).
I see Chastain over Stewart for some reason. Could be wrong. Colman, maybe.
Zegler? Really could be any of them, including Stone.
Hinds vs. Dornan (my wildcard) vs. Smit-McPhee vs. Kotsur, any of them!
Balfe vs. DeBose.
Belfast vs. TPOTD vs. LP for Screenplay.
Very unpredictable with this bunch this year, I think.
Superearly NGNG
Parallel Mothers gets in for Picture, Director, Actress, Original Screenplay and Score. Wins Actress
Don’t Look up wins Picture, Original Screenplay and Film Editing. Maybe Song as well. And watch out for Streep (leading) and Blanchett (supporting) for a surprise nomination… it could really happen, given the splash the film is making, that any combo of Leo, Streep, Hill and Blanchett score acting noms. Or even Rylance. SAG Ensemble seems more than likely, at least for the nom.
Belfast underperforms horribly at the nominations. Misses Director and only Hinds is nominated from its actors…
Rylance is more likely scoring a Razzie nod. Streep and Blanchett simply don’t deliver the performances that would make them even remotely likely nominees. Both were rather disappointing. And I doubt Streep is lead.
Rylance… I loved him the 2nd time around. He’s really a perfect blend of Bezos, Musk, Gates, Branson and Jobs… while Streep is a blend of Trump, Obama, Reagan and the Bushes…
You’ve hedged your bets there alright
Lol
Spielberg could get BD instead of Campion as the GG like their musicals
The Globes like their musicals but not in directing. And West Side Story is not as popular as musicals in the past. It only got 4 nods (even though some people had been expecting additional nods for screenplay, supporting actor).
And the HFPA wouldn’t really snub Campion. This year they have to look at their very best, they know this. Snubbing a female director wouldn’t really work in their favor. But if they for some reason snub Campion, best picture is over. The Power of the Dog is winning.
You’re probably right on that, insomuch, the GGs are on probation of sorts and I expect few surprises from them as they go with ”safe choices” … theymay go for Encanto instead of FLEE in best animated , and may go for Troy instead of Mcfee in BSA ?
I think Dornan might very well happen here. He’s good in Belfast, not great, not award-worthy, but he’s good. And he’s a sexy man and appears to be a nice human being who went through hell in 2021 with his dad dying from COVID and everything. So they might want to give him a hug.
Yes. Plus, he has Barb & Star in his sails.
Between ”Belfast” and ”Barb & Star,” Jamie Dornan shows his range. I happen to think he stands out in the former if only for the scene he sings ”Everlasting Love” to his wife. And he might surprise those who only know him from those ”50 Shades of Gray” movies. So far, he’s won a couple of Supporting Actor prizes (Sunset Film Critics, Capri, Hollywood IFF) and been nominated by others.
I have a huge crush on JD and he had a fantastic year, but there is no way anyone is giving him an award for that performance.
Best case scenario for The Power of the Dog is to lose this (and consequently the CC) for Belfast to avoid frontrunner fatigue. Belfast doesn’t hold up being the frontrunner.
It’s really hard to say. Whilst I agree Belfast is a weak front runner, these 2 wins might have an “inevitable winner” vibe given Belfast has won very little since TIFF yet remains the frontrunner for many.
GG would have a stigma I think, I’d still like to see TPOTD win CC.
off topic…
Just saw “The Rescue” and, wow, this is going to be a dog fight between this, and Summer of Soul for Best Doc. I prefer Summer of Soul, but The Rescue has an emotional beat that may prove unbeatable…
with this, I already have a really cool set of Documentaries for “nominations”
Bo Burham’s Inside (winner – I consider it a rare mix of doc and fiction, it’s fascinating, original, experimental and captures a moment in History)
Héroes: Silencio & Rock’n’roll
Nailbomber: Manhunt
The Rescue
Summer of Soul
I really don’t know why Netflix couldn’t wait with the Burnham pic and decided to submit it at the Emmys. Maybe they had very little faith in the documentary branch.
Inside could and should have earned a shitload of Oscar nominations, and certainly it would have scored Original Screenplay and Song, right away
Where’s Sammy.
Stop the awards season right now.
C’mon C‘ mon.
What kind of flat out masterpiece is that.
Outperforms that other black and white film in every, and I mean every department.
Destined to be this years most criminally under-rewarded film.
My top 10 for 2020
1. The Power Of The Dog
2. C’mon C’mon
3. Don’t Look Up
4. The Lost Daughter
5. Mass
6. Nitram
7. Worst Person In The World
8. Licorice Pizza
9. In The Heights
10. Drive My Car
It is a masterpiece. And Woody Norman should be a supporting actor contender.
Saw the last duel the other day. House of Gucci was classier and ridleys big blockbuster from 2021. Last duel dragged. Gucci was royal.
HOGucci was an absolute disaster.
I made two attempts already to get through The Last Duel, and couldn’t do it. Boring, and awful casting and styling of Affleck and Damon. Matt Damon still looks like a preppy boy he did in the mid 90’s and Affleck? I didn’t buy it. Adam Driver also looked out of place. I did enjoy Alex Lawther as the King.
Last duel was good but it dragged in parts. Gucci was entertaining
No argument here. Gaga was a blast and walked away owning a film stacked with Oscar winners.

I am a big Sorrentino fan but The Hand of God was… extremely disappointing and somewhat boring. While his “La Dolce Vita” wannabe “The Great Beauty” was amazing, his “Amarcord” felt all over the place, and never engaged me… I prefer him when he goes “Il Divo” or both series of “The Young Pope” and “The New Pope”… even with “Loro”
Totally agree. Hand of God was my most disappointing film of 2021, followed closely by Petit Maman.
I loved both of those films! Positive surprises for sure.
Are you referring to the one-part or the two-part version of Loro? Because I’ve only seen the one-part version and thought it was genuinely horrendous
I had access to the “short” version of the film, only. It’s no “Il Divo” neither – much underrated – “This must be the place”, but it is certainly way more interesting than this latest one.
A pretty awful list.
I’m happy for a number of these winners, but Capri, Hollywood Film Festival also gave a King of Comedy Award to Andrew Garfield in ”tick … tick … BOOM!” He’s terrific, but it’s no yuk-fest.
I think there is a question worth asking: how HFPA-sque HFPA will be this year? After all, this could be the year when they go: C’mon, we’ll go with acclaimed films. We want to honor really good films, even though we might not enjoy them. (This is the best way to avoid backlash for their actual winners.)
The other approach could be: F*** it, we’re voting for what we love.
For some weird reason I expect the former scenario: I expect them to go for critics’ pets across the board & hoping that they will translate into juggernauts.
This is why I expect The Power of the Dog to dominate, taking director, screenplay, actor and drama. It’s possible that they give screenplay to Branagh but I don’t see it happening.
The campaigns have been avoiding the GG like the plague.
It is going to be interesting to see if they annoint frontrunners and whether it will be seen as the kiss of death
The hardest category to predict is best actress. If we take a look at Gaga history at the Globes, they rewarded her for her performance in American Horror Story. That was a choice, considering they had Kirsten Dunst for Fargo. And now she delivered a great performance in House Of Gucci, which makes me think she’s the obvious choice. Also, she’s the biggest name there, what would certainly attract some buzz to their non-televised ceremony.
They gave Pia Zadora an award, so it makes sense.
Key with the Globes: they love their stars, and they will need THEIR stars more than ever. That’s why I have Paralllel Mothers winning both nominations (Almodovar is the biggest foreign star, and score is frankly anything could win), and always the more “stary” strong candidate winning. I have The Power of the Dog winning both Supporting, Director, Screenplay and losing Picture Drama. Smith, Kidman, in Drama, and in Comedy/Musical, Garfield (he’s HUGE this year) and Zegler (because WSS might win something and it seems to be a star-making turn). Encanto winning also its 2 noms, to see Miranda go up the stage 2 times…
Belfast wins BP Drama? Can PTA win screenplay?
I think Campion is double-winning Director and Screenplay, while losing Picture, Drama.
Why would they go for parallel mothers winning BFF when it’s not even nominated for the oscars ?
you just mentioned it. But also, who’s the biggest star out of the five directors of those films? The one that would be most recognisable in media? Remember, the HFPA would need as much exposure as possible, this year.
Also, the blame was on lack of diversity, that kind of secure that Smith will win Actor Drama, and Campion both Director and Writing. Having an all-star LGTB celebrity as Almodovar winning foreign film, also fits this mold.
Hardly seems worth it now. I doubt the GG’s will continue after this year.
They should fold themselves into the Critics Choice Awards. It’s absurd that an elite set of foreign journalists are given such weight. Just make it all journalists and critics as a counterpoint to the ‘industry’ awards.
It took decades for the Globes to build influence. The Globes are not an overnight success. I remember the AFI tried to do an awards show to compete with the Globes but failed to get revenue. So they only give a top 10 List and a lunch. But that lunch is said to be one of the BEST events to attend in Hollywood.
It took decades for people to forget that Pia Zadora’s husband literally purchased a Golden Globe for her.
I think it’s more absurd that the BFCA are given such weight.
Honestly if they hadn’t been putting their thumbs on the scales regarding pressers and screening, all of this could have been avoided.
Nope, they’ll weather the storm, roll with the punches and survive
The GGs have been under an investigation of sorts and so I expect their choices will be rather predictable with few if any surprises ..as such I expect the bookies odds to be about right …Oddschecker.com Golden Globes
They could go with Troy Kotsur instead of Kodi in BSA and they could go for Encanto instead of Flee in BA ..best song is a toss up between Beyonce and Billy Elish IMO
The GG are trying to remain relevant by accurately predicting the Oscars and they like to hedge their bets just in case ; as such I think they’ll go for Campion for BD, Belfast for best picture and WSS for best musical ..maybe the Dawg for best screenplay ?
I also think that Drive My Car is a safe bet for BFF and Debose is the very likely winner of BSAs, but Zegler is a weak frontrunner for best muscal actress (could be a surprise there )
I thought Ciaran Hinds has a chance unless he splits votes with Dornan.
Thats likely what will happen ; vote splitting
Rachel Ziegler seems like the perfect Golden Globes winner. They always love a fresh face and that category is pretty weak. (I mean, you can almost imagine an Emma Stone win out of the celeb-absurdity of it all.)
I don’t think Drive my car is a safe bet for BFF at all. Politics. The Globes have an history of 1) Trying to predict the Oscars 2) Try to be mainstream relevant 3) Try to attract attention to themselves… and this year, 4) Wash away the lack of “diversity” of their awards… I don’t think awarding a Japanese or an Iranian film is going to be enough, in Foreign Film (and that’s why I am thinking they will go LGTB+ with Almodovar). Drive my car is a 3 hours long feature, and that kind of doesn’t ring with me, as the kind of film that the Globes would like public to associate them with, in Foreign Film, but something “lighter” in lenght, poignant in story and directed by a legendary star director. Call it a hunch, but also is my analysis of this Globe race… it would also be a vindication of a film that has been denied by the Spanish Academy to compete for International Film at the Oscars, and just has been elected best actress at LAFCA, a field that crosses over with the HFPA…
There must be a reason why the Spanish academy didn’t want PM to compete ?
LAFCA does indeed cross over with the GG and they gave DMC best picture award ..that will surely have influenced the Globe voters
of course there is: Almodovar is NOT liked by his Spanish peers. Actually I can’t stand him as a celebrity, normally. A very different issue, is his talent and his art.
Why will anybody ask for a media credential when there are no celebrities? I think POTD wins BD while Belfast and West Side Story win BP in their respective categories. It is fortunate for the HFPA that there is no show.
No thanks.
You think the Globes are irrelevant?
No stars, no party, no drunken silliness? No thanks.
(Not sure if that answers your question, but I’m not at all interested in predicting the GGs.)
