Really happy that Val showed up here for Documentary Feature. Some of the best editing of the year, in any category.
No WSS??? WTF!
Also, Kudos to Kevin Can F**K Himself for entirely owning their multi-cam category.
So … WSS …….
SAG – voters didn’t get hard copy screeners.
ASC – the Kaminski issue, not being in the guild; perhaps they prefer others.
ACE – last minute switch from C/M (assuring a nom) to Drama.
Are all of these three things a THING, or just a talking point?
Whatever the case, this movie is definitely getting screwed by the Guilds.
Was wondering about these things myself.
Writers Guild of America Nominees are:
Adapted:
CODA
Dune
Nightmare Alley
Tick Tick Boom
West Side Story
Original:
Being the Ricardos
Don’t Look Up
The French Dispatch
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
saw Don’t Look Up again… it REALLY gets better with repeated viewings. Total underdog for a Best Picture win (however, McKay missed the DGA, which is like a kiss of death). But it is coming from behind.
It wasn’t winning before, it’s ABSOLUTELY not winning Best Picture without the DGA nomination.
I know. But I retract on what I said at the beginning. McKay is not Kubrick, nor the genius Oz/Rudnick team… but he NAILED the tone of the film and the satire. The only problem I have with the film now, is the Chamelet/Lawrence subplot, which I thought it was unnecessary but forced inside, to get the religious p.o.v. in the ending… I get “why” he did it, but as agnostic, I think it could have been done in other fashion that wouldn’t be so forced… and I really think the film would be better with the characters of Patel, Lawrence, Leo and Cate assasinated in “accidents”, as they were becoming a danger for Rylance’s/Streep’s plans.
Called it yesterday. Whether due to campaigning or plain eligibility, having WSS for Drama seriously hurts its chances. Unless they truly aren’t mashing comedies and musicals in the same category anymore I wouldn’t even think about listing it for Drama, no matter how good the editing is.
Unless they truly aren’t mashing comedies and musicals in the same category anymore
I think they still do. Otherwise, why would Tick Tick Boom get nominated in that category? It’s not a comedy. Or is it?
WSS missing here hurts its chance (obviously). But Spotlight did miss ACE, but made it at the Oscars. So there’s still a gasp of air to be had.
Spotlight didn’t also miss SAG Ensemble, though. 🙂 But, yes, it’s not dead.
Squid Game….grrr, aargh!
Can anyone on here find out if The Expanse was eligible in any of the guilds. or was it because of the wonky rules about Canada-based series?? Some can get in while others can’t. There HAS to be a rule that if you’re a Canadian series that airs episodes on broadcast, cable or streaming, you’re forking IN!
Let’s be honest, this category is a one horse race.
Dune, yes. Next-level great.
Yes, and the fact WSS is losing steam will make it much easier to win all the tech awards.
At least some good will come of this, if that’s the case… 🙂
Tick Tick Boom and KIng Richard again? Weird. So much for Drive My Car. Glad for No Time to Die. Boo/hiss In the Heights not there.
In the Heights was not really in the running
WSS: What the WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? So detective work, everyone; who stole their nomination?
*glares at King Richard*.
While I usually expect the industry to just ignore most of the few movies vaguely in the race that I really like and give awards to all sorts of bland alternatives, I never figured that West Side Story would be the one they’d do that with this year
It does seem odd, especially as it’s getting quite consistent now. Do they all just not like it, even though it’s seemingly very broadly likable and not at all divisive?
Maybe it’s because you just shouldn’t reboot a BP winner.
Why not?
It’s one thing to reboot a BP winner. It’s another to reboot it and then have people in the movie and in support of the movie out there kinda snarking at the original and being bitter about the demography of the original cast and the performance of the lead. There was some “superiority” in that that offended me, and now I wonder if I am not alone. I know that that turned me off, and even though I love Spielberg, I ended up not wanting to pay to see it. So I didn’t. I’ll see it on HBO Max after it wins one Oscar.
I would’ve rather been excited for it like I was at the beginning, but a few articles and a comment from a supporting player turned me off.
What a petty minded person you are
Oh, stupid loser. Go be a statistic.
You’re ony 13, or just a simpleton
No, petty is what they were and why they are going to be snubbed. What you don’t do is act like you’re the white knight coming in to save the movie the Academy loved and gave all those awards to.
I think some of the articles and chatter when the movie came out did not help. I don’t know if I want to get into it…
Either that, they can’t get over it being a remake of a movie they probably like a little more or it just doesn’t play well on screener.
Maybe (especially in the industry) the two versions are being compared a little too much. But I would imagine that if they like West Side Story, they will like any well made West Side Story.
I don’t think it’s just about whether it’s well-made, it’s so different in mood and energy that I think some people are just disappointed that it doesn’t have that weirdly repressed tension that’s so wonderful about the 1961 version. Of course this should prove that the new version isn’t just a retread but something completely different but that’s what you always get when someone dares to adapt something a second/third/etc. time: everything that is missing from the first one is wrong because it’s not exactly like the first one which is great and everything that is even somewhat similar is wrong because it’s just repeating the first version.
“it doesn’t have that weirdly repressed tension that’s so wonderful about the 1961 version”
Never thought of it that way. Describes it very well…
Personally, I didn’t like (most of) the changes because I genuinely felt they didn’t work as well as the things the original did. And I agree with you that the original is also far from perfect. It just comes together so much better, in the end, as far as I’m concerned…
It’s the fact that it’s a remake of a BP winner. It’s hurting it within the industry more than anywhere else. Similar to A Star is Born. (Also a remake, even if not of a BP winner.)
I know it’s technically not a remake, but that’s not going to matter to most voters.
Probably the box-office flop thing, too, indeed.
I think these snubs look spiteful now. How it can miss here and ASC is a big head scratcher. It seems BO really hurt the film badly, at least with these two guilds.
WSS and CODA, so sad.
WSS is a much bigger shock
Tic Tick Boom is absolutely in. If something misses from AMPAS line up it won’t be it. Most likely Ricardos.
WSS industry support hasn’t been strong for quite some time now. SAG wasn’t a fluke.
Quick observations
1. West Side Story not getting one of the 10 (!) slots here nor one of the 5 at ASC, is low key criminal, it should be the frontrunner in both those categories.
2. Between the SAG Ensemble nod and this ACE nod, the industry support is clearly there for King Richard so Will Smith is winning Best Actor.
3. Between this ACE nod and the most likely strong Bafta showing, I think No Time To Die could still surprise in BP at the Oscars IF the UK/European block shows up for it.
1. I disagree about front-runner, as The Power of the Dog is much more impressive imo. But snubs are too much, yes.
2. I don’t think so. It is a sports drama, and editors love those. The editing branch at the Academy nominated Cinderella Man!!!
3. Which surprises me… to me, it was a film that started out strong but fell apart very fast.
Damn West Side Story getting WRECKED. DGA snub incoming? Sad to see.
What if it doesn’t get a best picture nomination at the Oscars?
That will just be my typical Oscar nomination morning spent crying.
No way.
Nah it’s in for picture I just think this pushes it below the top teir to win
I don’t really think it’ll happen either, I think it will get a filler nomination but such a massive drop in a matter of days just made me think: “Why wouldn’t it keep dropping”
Please don’t put that thought into the universe…
Looks like a WSS snub. Not looking good.
I am surprised. I expected it to be weaker than many here thought, and I personally don’t like it much, but snubbed by both editors and DPs… I expected it to be strong in both categories…
How is tick, tick…Boom! in the comedy/musical category if West Side Story and In the Heights were in drama?
Well AIDS is such a jolly fun topic, isn’t it?
West Side Story snubbed?
Now West Side Story has missed a major guild that The Power of the Dog hasn’t
Actually two. It missed ASC as well…
As I complained to you yesterday, ASC is not a major guild in relation to best picture
Yes, but it is a major guild. It is not like missing costume designers… DPs are crucial to the world of film.
But there is (at least according to “traditional Oscar wisdom”) no notable correlation between who gets nominated for cinematography and best picture. Thus even if a cinematography nomination was expected for West Side Story, pointing to an ASC snub feels odd to me when trying to argue a film’s chances in best picture.
Well, people were predicting it as a lock and a surefire winner. This snub in cinematography equals a SAG snub for Cumberbatch. Would people consider a Cumberbatch SAG snub a sign of weakness, even though it is not really a stat thing?
Like the Hinds SAG snub, a Cumberbatch SAG snub would have made me go:
1) The snubbed achievent is not winning an Oscar
2) There’s a small crack in the armor of the film
3) This snub in and of itself is not sufficient. Let’s see what else happens.
This is in my opinion also what the ASC snub without context was. Of course now it’s a completely different thing and thus this argument on my part is pointless but I think the basic idea is still relevant.
Yup, that’s exactly how I view these things, too.
To be fair I do consider ASC semi major for WSS… I get your reasoning not considering it major but especially for a film that has been thrown out as a best cinematography winner the ASC snub was significant
