“A lot of this actually happened.”
Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Is it though? I was kind of underwhelmed, and I can’t really tell what it’s about.
I loved American Hustle, but this looks like what many felt like after they saw AH and let it sink in—only this time it’s a glaring red light in the trailer.
Anyone else?
“Clerks III” trailer is out and… to my taste? Looks FANTASTIC. Meta enough to stablish a self-referential thought about the pass of time, and the inner and personal adventure of Kevin Smith both as an artist and a human being. Jeff Anderson (again) looks incredible (he was in my shortlist for 1994 Supporting Actor, if you ask me, and close for Clerks II as well), and I’d love for critics and WGA to enjoy this and support it for a long overdue Original Screenplay nomination for Kevin Smith… one of the most influential directors that came out in the early 90s, and whose influence went beyond film, into comic-book and even animation (I’d dare to say that South Park owes much to Clerks and the Askewverse).
(I liked Clerks III trailer way more than Amsterdam, honestly… which looked to me, fine, but kind of a watered down version of what Wes Anderson would do)
AMPAS, make me happy…
Original Screenplay
Clerks III
Everything Everywhere All At Once
3 movies more, with no shot at winning. 😉
Clerks is a more mainstream Jim Jarmusch. It’s absurdist yet mainstream. I’d call Jarmusch the influential one, but Clerks should never be diminished as a result.
It’s a comedy milestone.
to me, KS has made three total masterpieces: “Clerks”, “Chasing Amy” and “Red State” (which is so good that I enrage with reading the bad reviews). He has made some bad films (Jersey Girl, Cop Out, Yoga Hoosers) but most of his films are extremely interesting, if flawed, and he certainly has an unique authorial voice (Dogma, Clerks 1 & 2, Chasing Amy, Red State, the Jay & Silent Bob films, Tusk, Mallrats, Zack & Miri make a Porno) that ain’t for every taste, admittedly. I respect that some people don’t like his filmography, but certainly I can’t respect those who pan him all together…
I was gobsmacked when I saw Red State. I expected nothing and I was wrong. It really was wonderful. I never got into Chasing Amy. Probably because of the is she or isn’t she a lesbian angle. Just not interested in the topic.
there’s no is she or isn’t she… in her 2nd scene, it’s made clear that she’s full lesbian. The meat of the story is how a straight guy handles falling in love with a lesbian that, for her, he’s her best friend. There’s an hilarious and yet dramatic scene with Jason Lee’s character summarizing to Affleck’s the key of the problem, that he fails to realize. It’s a complete masterpiece, and the scene under the rain is absolutely the best one Smith ever directed.
In my book, Chasing Amy was 1997’s best film and should have won Picture, Actress, Original Screenplay, and get nominations for Directing, Supporting Actor (Jason Lee) as well. Directing shouldn’t go any other way in 1997, than James Cameron, for his titanic work (pun intended)
I only saw it once. My memory is clouded.
1997 was also the year I moved to Portland and moved away from being so dependent on entertainment and switched to alcohol, so my memories can be quite awful.
Sidenote – I’ve seen commercials for The Gray Man and the new Thor movie tonight. I bet the movie with the humans is better. Not sure who the ad for Thor was for. Anyone who is going to watch it was going to see it anyway. THis new ad makes it look terrible. And Chris Hemsworth never looked worse.
I don’t know about you but watching that trailer for Thor makes me think one thing. Jane Foster has the high ground.

seeing this tomorrow… in Taika I trust.
I cannot wait for this. It’s been too long since we’ve gotten a new David O. Russell film (I maintain that Joy is a very good film, just not quite what people were expecting).
Cant wait. Film Twitter already has knives for it, of course.
Film Twitter is filled with idiotic people.
Excuse me, but there’s one shot missing from above. Probably the most important one.

DOR films / trailers never do anything for me.
I flat out hated The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy.
Too bad because his ensembles are always great.
Why didn’t you like The Fighter? I think that was his best in his string of Oscarbait films.
I remember the first clip of Christian Bale in the film—I leaned over to my friends and said “He’s winning the Oscar.” I was so mesmerized by his performance I saw the film 3 times in the theatre.
His films aren’t perfect but I think he gets a lot out of his performers—that I think people get so into the acting that they ignore the issues of the film/filmmaking.
I do wonder though if there will be a giant smear campaign against him and all the old videos of him fighting with actors will resurface, and derail the film….hope not….the film and its actors deserve the chance to impress us.
I didn’t find anything impressive or cinematic about The Fighter other than two very good performances (Bale, Adams).
The rest of the film was giving “CBS Movie of the Week in 1995” vibes to me.
The script was mediocre, the directing flashy in all the wrong ways and the production values were as basic as it gets.
As always with DOR films, the acting ensemble elevated the material somewhat but they are not miracle workers.
My two cents.
I see your points.
I don’t think any of his films are great, but like you said his actors elevate the material and that makes them enjoyable for me.
Fair enough.
Said in the other thread it looks like American Hustle fun which means it will sweep nominations. And if people think academy voters care about DOR being a monster they are in for a rude awakening.
Dovid O’ Russell has become unbearable to me. It’s a shame, FLirting with Disaster and Three Kings are simply great films.
Silver Linings Playbook annoyed me because after Bradley Cooper restarted taking his much hated meds, the issue was never mentioned again. All was perfect.
Then it got worse. The Fighter gave us Christian Bale with the least persuasive crack addict in film history. Never met a person on crack who was content to just sit there is a room with others like it was a Sunday Get-together.
American Hustle was an over-caffeinated mess.
And now this. “A lot of this actually happened” might be the worst piece of info ever given about a movie. It’s easily translated to “This movie makes no sense and I’ve added a lot of absurd details because the original story wasn’t interesting enough. So I am going to trick you into thinking more of this is true than it is and you will be captivated by this fallacy as if it were a pile of truth.” No thank you.
Oh, and Christian Bale might be the most overrated actor of all time.
And who wants to sit through a movie that might as well be called “Various Shades of Brown.”
(Just in case you weren’t already implying this), isn’t “A lot of this actually happened” the opening title card of American Hustle?
I think Russell just likes the idea of basically expressing in words the idea that he doesn’t want to be limited to the actual events of a story but still wants “can you believe that this actually happened” reactions
it was in the trailer for Amsterdam
I think, after Fargo, no one needs to play with what is reality and what is fake. The Coens nailed it perfectly.
I’m aware, I was making the point that I thought he was reusing the line. Now, looking at a clip, the opening title card was “Some of this actually happened”; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z4ZrN5_ufw
