The BAFTA has released its long list. Per deadline: These lists have been compiled via Round One of BAFTA’s voting. Round Two, which determines the nominations, opens today and closes on 13 January 2023. The EE Rising Star Award nominees will be announced on 17 January.
Here is what changed this year, per AwardsWatch:
Best Director will be 16 films, down from 20 films, with 8 slots for female-directed films and 8 slots for male-directed titles.
And:
The top three performances in all four performance categories in Round One chapter voting will be automatically nominated, up from two in 2022. The remaining three places on the nominations list will come from the nominating jury, which previously chose four names. The total nominations will remain at six per category.
Elsewhere, the top two directors — regardless of gender — from the Round One chapter vote will automatically be nominated. The top five female and top five male directors will be longlisted.
The longlisting jury will select the remaining three female and three male directors to create a longlist of 16 (equal gender split). In Round Two, the nominating jury will select four directors to join the two automatically nominated in Round One, creating a nominations list of six.
Deidre Hopkins, head of film at BAFTA, explains: “There is a change because the last two years the nominating jury has selected all six [directing nominees]. Now, the directing chapter will select the top two that go through to the nominations.”
So basically, it’s all still the flea circus and to be taken with a grain of salt. Their members aren’t choosing these so what they’re doing is trying to “fix” things rather than reflect them. And this serves their own need for a collective sense of purpose and moreover, deflects any accusations of racism.
These aren’t film awards particularly. They’ve evolved to becoming a kind of social program to improve their own image and to push under-represented groups. They should be seen the way we see other voting bodies that target specific minority groups. At least when you know that going in it helps to parse things like “so and so was snubbed” for this or that. Any journalist covering these long list nominations should make note of exactly what their process is.
I assume Best Film is chosen by the whole voting body, which is why it won’t reflect Best Director. Only one woman, Charlotte Wells for Aftersun, directed a film on the long list. Men direct the rest. So I guess I wouldn’t read too much into a name being left off of Best Director. That, along with the acting categories, should not be considered when it comes to the Oscars…
