Today, the Academy had their traditional luncheon honoring the nominees. They assembled for their class photo and posed for various photos. Here they are for your enjoyment.
Spielberg is Hollywood’s hottest helmer. May other towering talents of Tinseltown take note! Top Gun 2 saved motion pictures and must be given that most famous of statuettes: Academy Award for Best Picture!
What evidence is there that Riseborough was ”shamed” into not showing her face? If she went, she might’ve found a number of celebrity supporters, like Cate Blanchett. Meantime, a spokesman told the Daily Mail: ”Andrea is in production on ‘The Palace’ in Europe and was unable to travel to Los Angeles given her shooting schedule.”
”Classic nomshaming”? It’s not like this happens every year. It’s rare for the Academy to launch investigations like this. In 2021, when LaKeith Stanfield landed a surprise Oscar nomination for Supporting Actor (for ”Judas and the Black Messiah”), without having received ANY attention from any of the precursor prizes, no one thought to launch an AMPAS investigation. Rise-borough’s campaign raised questions. While the Academy determined ”To Leslie’s” campaigning tactics ”does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded,” it added: ”However, we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.”
The applause isn’t an indication of who is going to win. There are 10K voting Academy members. Most aren’t even at the luncheon. This is a media event – and the media aren’t Oscar voters.
East Asians, Latinos and South Asian Indians, and Arabs are now lamented as “white people”. The OscarsSoWhite movement has devolved into comical weirdness.
Many people in Latin America are white (Spanish, Portugese, Italian, German, etc descent) and may Arabs are white (pretty much everyone in the North – Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Emirates, Iraq, SA). So why is that controversial?
Clayton Davis of Variety, Scott Feinberg of the Hollywood Reporter and Pete Hammond of Deadline.com all covered the Oscar luncheon, and they agreed that Tom Cruise ”stole the show.” Everyone mobbed him and wanted to say hi to him, from Steven Spielberg to Baz Luhrmann to Paul Mescal, and Cruise told Variety: ”I’m having a great time.” And when Cruise met Austin Butler, Steve Pond at the Wrap reported: ”The room pretty much had a meltdown,” as a ring of cameras encircled them. Clearly there’s a lot of love for Cruise. Nearby was Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of ”Top Gun: Maverick,” who was celebrating his first Oscar nomination at age 79.
According to reports, 182 Oscar nominees attended, the biggest turnout ever in the event’s history, and all of the attendees were announced as they took their class photo. Hammond felt the applause was ”pretty evenly spread around.” However, Feinberg reports he thought the loudest applause went to Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Sarah Polley, Brian Tyree Henry, Butler and Cruise. And Davis reported that among those getting the most applause were Butler, Stephanie Hsu, Brendan Fraser, Guillermo del Toro, Rick Carter and Dede Gardner.
Jamie Lee Curtis got the loud applause because she was the first person (and a celebrity to boot) announced. I wouldn’t read too much into that.
I’m not surprised with the reception that Cruise got. He’s the biggest star in the world and he’s very approachable and affable in these types of situation. And he made time to be there with the little people. I’m sure they were all impressed with that.
I wonder if any deals are spawned from these events. All award season long, the same producers, actors, directors, going to all the same events, over and over again, chatting each other up. Surely, ideas get sparked and packages put together?
It has no right winning WGA with the current competition. But if it does end up winning defeating WT, then it’s a sign of support that we can’t ignore. Not saying that I will immediately switch. It will then have to win ACE as well.
And at the Oscars, it has to win screenplay there first.
The Living thing makes a lot of sense to me (prestige writer, British support, only script nominated everywhere), apart from the BP nomination thing. As huge as that is, I could still see that upset happening. More than All Quiet. Probably also more than Top Gun: Maverick.
WGA win would be a start. It *has* to win that. And, yes, PGA and then ACE. Unless EEAAO starts to fall apart and loses DGA and WGA, TG would have to start running the table.
I’m not a big fan of ”Top Gun: Maverick’s” script, but it did get nominated by the USC Scripter Award (where it’s been withdrawn), and the Academy’s writing branch nominated it over, say, ”The Whale,” which some pundits earlier were even predicting to win the Academy Award. (Huh?!)
Yup, without that win I just don’t see the path… The WGA is probably winnable, to be fair. They do go for popular films a fair bit, over more “writerly” ones. (There are a few obvious examples, including a couple just last year.) And the category is quite weak.
And the PGA is definitely winnable for it. I, for one, think DGA is also a bit of a possibility. Not a big one, but it’s there. There’s some precedent…
What I think makes it still a threat is that if it starts to win big guilds (with, say, the DGA – or even just the PGA, which is the next one), it feels exactly like the sort of movie that might not stop winning them, from that point on… 🙂 Like CODA, like Argo… The “starting” part is probably the trickiest one. As is usually the case.
Same here and this is a sad likelihood.
A real possibility based on the sobering understanding we have gained from Academy where popularity, being loved & being emotional overtake actually artistic and merit based reasoning.
Still, I will consider it a black mark on Academy’s part if they do give Top Gun 2 the BP the same way Golden Globes got it in my book by nominating something like The Tourist (TG2 is not as bad but it is NOWHERE near a BP nominee let alone winner).
Taste is subjective, so nearly all artistic awards are a form of popularity contest. Whoever wins, wins ‘cuz their performance and/or film and and/or narrative was the most-liked.
Taste is and voting for what you like is absolutely correct BUT this is about voting for the PERSONALITY.
Voting for Top Gun 2 because they like it is more than ok but voting for it because they like THE PERSON behind it is epitome of stupidity that Academy is succumbed to again and again (As most human groups have sadly).
Guarantee you at least half of those nominees were privately seething that they couldn’t get screens for their films because Top Gun was playing on 95% of the screens in America at its peak.
I mean, I don’t particularly understand why that movie is so well liked (I found it mediocre-to-bad), but it’s very popular, including in the industry. There must be a reason.
…it truly ought be about TRUE best picture conrenders of year PRIMARILY IN HOLLYWOOD SECONDARY but ciurse they be part of it if film truly good enough in Asian european indisn actors crew etc.. ie i really want see All Quiet on Wesyern Front.

Maybe not the best selection of photos but IF one does come to the “so many white people” conclusion and still being stuck in decades ago, Academy only has themselves to blame when they completely shut off most well made films made by non-white artists in favor some dubious choices (& possibly rooting for Jerry Bruckheimer sequel to an 80s b movie).
If it were 60 years ago, this portrait would be all-white and practically all-male. And even with the recent efforts at diversity, the Academy membership is still largely dominated by white men and their tastes. Yes, this year’s nominees could have been more diverse, especially among African-Americans, but it was a record year for Asian actors just getting NOMINATED. The Academy has a history of Oscar-winning Best Pictures and Nominees in which none of its Asian actors were nominated: ”The Last Emperor,” ”Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” ”Slumdog Millionaire,” ”Parasite” …
I wonder if any deals are spawned from these events. All the same producers, actors, directors, going to all the same events, over and over again, chatting each other up. Surely, ideas get sparked and packages put together?
No comparison could be made. Yeoh got probably the loudest reaction. Blanchett got a muted response. I’ve been saying this to myself the entire season: Wait for SAG.
Besides de Armas and Riseborough, Clayton Davis at Variety says other no-shows included Barry Keoghan, James Cameron, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and David Byrne.
Some people are just shy for these types of scenes. He seems like one of these introvert characters. And I’m sure he had a good excuse like working/busy somewhere far away.
If he were in an L.A. apartment picking his nose, then I would say it’s strange. 🙂
Guillermo said this in a Collider interview about making all the projects he wants to:
“First of all, I weigh more than 300 pounds and I’m 54, so no. I can’t. There are about 20 projects and I won’t live that long.”
Yep.

Largest turnout in nominee luncheon history. Too bad they shamed Riseborough into not showing her face.

Meantime, a spokesman told the Daily Mail: ”Andrea is in production on ‘The Palace’ in Europe and was unable to travel to Los Angeles given her shooting schedule.”
When they create an investigation into you because they think there might be some hanky panky going on, that’s classic nomshaming.
”Classic nomshaming”? It’s not like this happens every year. It’s rare for the Academy to launch investigations like this. Agreed. She has no business being an Oscar nominee, but priorities. Filming a movie takes precedence.
Hooray for Hollywood!

What happened? Did people at the luncheon love Michelle Yeoh as much as we do?
The applause isn’t an indication of who is going to win. There are 10K voting Academy members. Most aren’t even at the luncheon. This is a media event – and the media aren’t Oscar voters.

Did any of them have the courage to ask Cruise where Shelly Miscavige was? Why exactly is the industry so shit scared of Scientology?
I always hated measuring the applause.
Jamie Lee Curtis got the loud applause because she was the first person (and a celebrity to boot) announced. I wouldn’t read too much into that.

I have seen several reports on how popular Cruise was in the room. Bodes very well for Top Gun.
It does bode well for TG! It will now more likely to upset and win editing (and sound). 🙂
I actually do think it has a shot for BP. (Even though I really disliked the film.)
If it wins WGA, I will start to consider.
With the number of scripts that weren’t eligible for WGA, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that.
It has no right winning WGA with the current competition. But if it does end up winning defeating WT, then it’s a sign of support that we can’t ignore. Not saying that I will immediately switch. It will then have to win ACE as well.
And at the Oscars, it has to win screenplay there first.
If there’s going to be a spoiler in Adapted Screenplay it’s either Living or All Quiet.
Nah. Fabelmans would be next. Not enough people would have seen Living. And All Quiet is a more of a visual achievement and it’s in German.
Fabelmans isn’t in the Adapted category, it’s in the Original Category.
I don’t know how I mixed that up! Never mind. It’s between WT and TG. I would say Quiet is third (given it’s a BP nominee).
The Living thing makes a lot of sense to me (prestige writer, British support, only script nominated everywhere), apart from the BP nomination thing. As huge as that is, I could still see that upset happening. More than All Quiet. Probably also more than Top Gun: Maverick.
Living could also easily win BAFTA. Might be the favorite there, even. Haven’t checked the odds.
Defeating Women Talking isn’t that big of a feat though. But if it wins PGA…

If ”Top Gun: Maverick” wins Editing and Sound, that wouldn’t be an upset. The odds at GoldDerby.com have it as the front-runner in both races.
But a lot of people predict EEAAO winning editing.
No. It really doesn’t. If TG was this runaway favorite, then Cruise and Kosinski wouldn’t have missed their nominations.
I never claimed it’s a runaway favourite. I just said that being popular in the room matters.
Guarantee you at least half of those nominees were privately seething that they couldn’t get screens for their films because Top Gun was playing on 95% of the screens in America at its peak.
That’s ridiculous.
The topic of films not being able to get screens because TG and Marvel films had them all was discussed quite heavily during the summer.
Perhaps, but these are professionals that understand the business they have chosen… I doubt anyone was seething.
Name a film that won BP without winning acting, writing, or directing.
It could easily win Adapted Screenplay. Women Talking is not much of a competition.
Hang on, let me check. Nope, no flying monkeys coming out of my butt, which is the only event that would precede the TG:M “script” winning.

I mean, I don’t particularly understand why that movie is so well liked (I found it mediocre-to-bad), but it’s very popular, including in the industry. There must be a reason.
Granted, from the early days, but more than expected: ”Wings,” ”The Broadway Melody,” ”Grand Hotel,” ”Mutiny on the Bounty,” ”Rebecca”
We had our Grand Hotel stat last year. Back-to-back is as likely as Kari Lake saying she lost.

Wow, the ovation for Michelle Yeoh, Brian Tyree Henry, and Stephanie Hsu.
There are so many white people. This photo might have been taken 60 years ago. It’s a tad depressing.
This photo is whiter than OAN.

Does anyone know why Riseborough did not attend? I hope has nothing to do with the drama but due to her scheduling conflicts.
Apparently she’s filming in Europe.
oh cool thx
I think she might not even attend the Oscars.
So who didn’t attend? Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough …
Anyone else?
I didn’t see Marcel there, although he’s very small, so I might’ve missed him.

Hahaha.
Besides de Armas and Riseborough, Clayton Davis at Variety says other no-shows included Barry Keoghan, James Cameron, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and David Byrne.
Strange for Barry Keoghan.
Thanks!
Some people are just shy for these types of scenes. He seems like one of these introvert characters. And I’m sure he had a good excuse like working/busy somewhere far away.
If he were in an L.A. apartment picking his nose, then I would say it’s strange. 🙂
Good on Cameron for blowing that off. The Academy treated him and Way of Water as a red headed stepchild, a mere afterthought.
I can’t find Colin Farrell. Never mind, found him!!
There are photos of Farrell and Butler together at the luncheon. Also read that Farrell was looking for fellow Irishman Paul Mescal there.
Guillermo said this in a Collider interview about making all the projects he wants to:
“First of all, I weigh more than 300 pounds and I’m 54, so no. I can’t. There are about 20 projects and I won’t live that long.”
