Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Did I hear that you Sasha and Ryan have not watched All Quiet on the Western Front yet? 7-time BAFTA winner and 9-time Oscar nominee? You gotta get to it. Yes, it is heavy. But believe it or not, it did not hit me as hard as, say, Banshees did. And I love Banshees. AQOTWF is integral watching for this cinematic year before you watch the Oscars. It is just a well done film from top to bottom that deserves to be seen.
No sure where you heard that, John!
I’ve seen it 3 times since last October, and I’ve been naming it as one of my 3 favorite movies of the year since I first made all my lists in December. I was the only one of the 5 of us on the AD editorial staff to predict that it would win Best Picture at BAFTA.
I think Sasha first mentioned seeing it on December 12th and she has been raving it ever since.
You mustn’t believe all the lies that Joe Rogan tells about me!
Well, your predictions seemed to miss the mark this year.
I understand the frustration when the movie or performance you’re rooting for doesn’t win. With the Academy, especially over the last two decades, that has occurred more often than not. But I take umbrage against the idea that EEAAO is so insular. Not more so than Coda let alone The Power of the Dog. The Oscars ultimately should continue to be what they are – a math, popular vote that inspires to reward excellence in filmmaking, however the voters evaluate that. After all these years, the one thing I haven’t lost faith in is the idea that the voters do still generally try to vote for what they want, what they think is worthy of winning the industry’s highest honor. The Academy often writes wrongs that the precursors commit, both in nominations and wins. So after two decades of mostly insular Best Picture winners after ROTK, EEAAO would strike a wonderful balance between crowdpleasing, successful populist hit (to the extent that it really has widespread support) and critically acclaimed filmmaking that actually does something different as well as checks the boxes of what motivates voters to pick an unprecedented winner.
Sasha’s smear campaign against Everything Everywhere (and poc) continues
That’s okay. If it means EEAAO doesn’t win and embarrass the Academy, I’m all for it.

That wouldn’t be embarrassing it would be great!
DGA will be the first big test for both Top Gun and EEAAO. Let’s see if either of them wins or maybe someone else does. Exciting!
EEAAO will no stand to the test of time? Well, Spielberg’s movie already didn’t pass it.
We’ll see… I think The Fabelmans might be looked on rather favorably 10 years from now, and so on… Once the problem of having been the Oscar front-runner stops hurting it.
We may watch it over the three-day weekend. I am excited. I agree with you totally that being the early frontrunner hurts it.
It’s a wonderful movie, not sugary, just real…
DGA should win Fields, will win the Daniels.
BAFTA should win Fields will win McDonough
Would be happy for Sammy if Todd won.
McDonald is going to win Screenplay and British Film at the BAFTA, there’s no need to award him three personal BAFTAs to the same person, that’s why I think Field or Berger will win Director.
McDonald Duck? 🙂
Why not the Daniels for BAFTA BD? They’re winning most places…
I am thinking Todd Field for Best Director at BAFTA.
A very strong possibility, indeed. For picture, too, maybe.
How would anyone in his/her right mind choose EEAA in Directing?
Got this feeling Daniels are taking it. Please, please not Spielberg..
I saw a post on Facebook that read—
“That moment when the Oscar Luncheon become a Tom Cruise meet and greet” followed by TONS of pictures of so many of the nominees getting pictures/selfies with Tom.
You can’t deny that there could be a surge for Top Gun….
Possibly.
Nobody cares ! Lousy year ! Babylon and RRR should have been there ! t
Tired of the usual suspects being nominated ! What about Armageddon Time , Amsterdam or Pearl !
I’m with Sasha in trying not to care about awards that I really wish would go to someone else.
I still enjoy seeing who won the DGA, but I agree that the thrill is gone, though not for the same reason as FeelingBlue2018. For me, the DGA is when I usually realize that yet again, my favorite movie is probably not going to win Best Picture. The first time I remember this is when I was grasping at straws for Boyhood, and Inarritu won for Birdman.
It’d be neat to have a surprise, but am I expecting one? No.
