The BAFTA Long Lists Are Here

Review: Bugonia is Pure Genius

The BAFTA releases their “long lists” ahead of nominations. It was released in a nearly unreadable format online and finding a clean version to post was a challenge. Finally, the HR provided one.

The awards community, such as it is now, tends to go a bit overboard with these I think. Making the long list doesn’t necessarily mean much but it can give you some clues, I suppose, where all of this is heading — although did we have any doubt? Never have I lived through an awards race that is written long before it ever begins.

Best Director must be gender-balanced, don’t forget. Half men, half women. That is the last gasp of their Great Awokening – but at least the select juries are gone.

On Director, out is Guillermo Del Toro for Frankenstein. In is Yorgos Lanthimos and Joachim Trier, as I suspected. One of the six will drop for the final nominations. I don’t even want to know which one that will be, maybe Lanthimos? Trier?

By the way, Yorgos Lanthimos has been overlooked this year for what I think is his best film. I remain shocked that he hasn’t been celebrated more, although he’s been celebrated plenty in the past. Bugonia is a masterpiece. So I’m happy to see at least one voting body recognize him, at least on the long list.

I have some charts on the long list that I will post later today with my predictions piece. But for now, here is the list.
