DVD/Blu-ray combo pack is the only option. (No standalone edition for either format). No details about special features yet, except for a 30 minute making-of documentary, Exploring the Tree of Life, to focus mainly on Malick.

So, dumb question but this combo pack will come with a regulard dvd copy and the blu- ray? For us non blu ray users…
colin, hard to say for sure.
Right now, on Amazon.com. the only pre-order avalable is for the Blu/DVD combo pack. ($30)
But I see on the Amazon.uk site that a separate DVD only edition has a pre-order page. (£12.93 = $21.00)
(and strangely, no Blu-ray listed on the UK right now.)
This was announced only yesterday.
Guess we have to wait and see in a few weeks.

Well if you want a new movie on Bluray, buy it the week its released. Even with the combo packs, they’re always dirt cheap at Walmart or Target. I think it was Target that had the Inception (Blu/DVD/Dig copy) for 17 bucks when it first came out.

Is it possible they’ll have just a blu-ray version of this before it’s released? Or are we stuck with a two disc set? (I’m relatively new at blu-ray purchasing…)

Hey Carson! Well on certain movies, they provide a DVD copy so parents can take the movie in the car for roadtrips. That makes sense. With Tree of Life DVD copy, parents can now put kids to sleep! I’m kidding…I love the movie. Cant wait.
It does make a certain kind of added-value sense. The cost of pressing an additional physical disc itself is pennies. So long as a consumer is paying for the right to watch a movie at home, it’s great to have as many format options as possible (like the “digital copy” included in some editions.)
Combining the formats in dual editions saves on packaging costs and simplifies inventory. I just don’t see why these editions have to come at a premium price of 150% over normal editions. I mean, ok, I DO SEE WHY — but it’s aggravating that the ripoff is mandatory.

Why only Blu Ray AND DvD? I’ve never understood the concept of it, if you have one, why would you need the other? Maybe I be stupid…
Honestly, CarsonT, Looks to me like a way to jack up the price $10 by selling a 2-disc set with one disc that nobody will use.

I wouldnt even call the Hollywood Reporter review that postive.

I love to read this love for this film. For me, the film was all about something ineffable and probably impossible to film – the literal feeling of being a child. The hand twisting outside the car window, the rustle of the trees as you stare up into them…the remarkable poignancy of just discovering the world when you’re young. One film that gestured in this direction was To Kill a Mockingbird, especially those opening lines when Scout says “The day was 24 hours long but seemed…longer somehow.” In that film, Scout’s journey took something of a backseat to the story of Atticus defending the black man. But the Tree of Life was basically what if Scout grew up, took a corporate job, and looked back on what she missed? I loved it. Ever since American Graffiti, we’ve wallowed in nostalgia for that era, but even in films like Back to the Future, Stand By Me, and Dirty Dancing they never really attempted to show you the sort of evanescent painful wonder that is the childhood feeling. Even if Tree of Life might have been uneven in portions, it gets a lot of credit for going where no film has gone before.

Terribly disappointed to learn about “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” not being released earlier. Maggie Smith – Albert Finney – Judi Dench? What a wonderful, great all-star cast of actors. This is on my “must see” list.
And it has the most appetizing movie title of any year . . . except for that Chinese film – Dee Dee Phantom something-or-other film.

“The Tree of Life” is the best picture I have seen this year.
It is clearly the most intelligent, beautifully rendered, and perfectly filmed picture thus far released.
I think there is a segment of the movie-going population out there who find this film “frustrating” or “boring”. It is not an action-packed thriller. But it is a densely melodic, silent meditation on deep existential questions. Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? How do I fit in with this universe?
“The Tree of Life” doesn’t answer any of these questions for you (thank god . . .it is not preachy), but it certainly poses how we FEEL about them.

off topic but the first pics from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are out:

it’s Oscar chances are fucked up, since it’s scheduled for a March 9th, 2012 release

Nice eye catching Layout…looks like one of those British documentary. They could’ve put Chastain’s name between Pitt/Penn.

i can’t wait! a brilliant masterpiece and like i’ve said before on this site i think with the new 5% of first place votes needed to get a best picture nom i think this one has a real chance. In the older best picture formats it would be too artisitically ambitious to be recognized… either way, i’m rooting for it.
the blue ray cover is also spot on… through the evolution (see how i did that) of malick’s career he has turned into one of the great montagists of all time (mount rushmore for me includes eisenstein, leone, and oliver stone (at least the guy who made the brilliant JFK) and now Malick.
