so I just saw the whole thing. i cringed when mcqueen talked about lack of diversity because I know payne/reitman don’t use ethnic actors at all, so it was almost aimed right at them.

Terrence Malick would never participate in something like this. I would have been shocked to see his face.

Would have liked to see a more international representation, but that was interesting. As the others have said, McQueen quite impressed me.

I was pretty disappointed to see that none of the other directors wanted to comment on the lack of diversity in film. I think one of the qualities of a great director is not shying from tough questions and I admire Steve McQueen for that. I was also pretty disappointed that Terrence Malick wasn’t part of this. Tree Of Life was the best film so far this year in my opinion.

Wow, Steve McQueen at the end, that was something else. I completely agreed with him and nobody there could really come back from that. That was awesome.

I thought this was more interesting than “the duel” of Cameron/Reitman two years ago. Thumbs up for Payne talking about foreign cinema – and mentioning Kaurismäki. I can still see Le Havre being nominated.

McQueen sure knows how to left everyone speachless (wether in agreement or not), Payne knows his international cinema, Miller was too restraint, Reitman seems to have toned down a little bit his ways since the Up in the Air days and absolutely loveeeed how Hanavicious put the French New Wave into perspective (always a tad overrated in my opinion).
And PLEASE: Fire the moderator, he’s awful and brings nothing to the discussion!!!!! Absolutely hated his snobism and constant stepping in.

The issue is, however strong the offerings by the women directors that have been listed here, none are expected to make noise this awards season. This is an awards season roundtable, it would be disingenuous to include a women director just for the sake of having one.

The moderators are always dumb. They should hire Sasha and Ryan for it.

wow not even one woman on the panel, this is quite unfortunate given great work by Lynn Ramsay, Kelly Reichhardt, and Sarah Polley.

What’s interesting to me is listening to McQueen and thinking ‘He’s so European/British’ and then two seconds later he says he doesn’t think of himself as particularly British. lol I think Americans and Europeans might as well be different species.

Though some of their films are among some of my favorites, I love how Hazanavicius subliminally sh*** on the French New Wave lol. I swear a lot of times a film’s greatness is often lost in translation. (or assumed in translation?)
I liked when he spoke about Wilder. I always feel like as legendary as he is, he isn’t spoken of as often as some of the usual suspect auteurs, especially coming from a non-English European.

Nice to see Mike Mills among the group, absolutely loved ‘Beginners’. I really wish Miller spoke a bit more, that last bit he talked about at the end was great, and it would have been nice if at least one of the other directors had anything to say about black directors/actors. Their silence after McQueen spoke on the subject wasn’t very reassuring, is casting black actors as leads still that big of a taboo/norm that even some of today’s greatest directors can’t explain why it is so common?

Of the lot, McQueen’s work impresses me the most (haven’t seen The Artist, yet).

You’re welcome! Steve McQueen proves here that his genius as a director is not accidental – this guy knows just what he’s doing.
