How Best Actor Drives Best Picture

How Best Actor Drives Best Picture

Nowadays, the most influential category for Best Picture is Screenplay. That just means it's most common that a Best Picture nominee has a corresponding screenplay nomination. A film can miss almost everything else, but if it misses Screenplay it's very rare that it wins Best Picture. Missing Best Director doesn't matter as much anymore in the expanded Best Picture ballot era. Right behind Screenplay...

For Olivia, My First Crush

They say you never forget your first crush. I have to confess, when I first saw Grease on HBO back in…never mind. Let’s just say this was a time that preceded streaming, DVRs, and your guide came to you in the mail once a month in what amounted to a pamphlet form.  Anyway, that’s enough of me dating myself. I do recall that summer afternoon when Grease was showing on ye olde Home Box Office and thinking that blonde girl sure is pretty, and she can sing too. It never occurred to me while watching Grease that her and co-star...

Writers here offer different points of view and belong to very different ideologies. I could fire everyone and say I only want writers who mirror my own beliefs but that would be, I think, a boring...

Favorite Oscar Year, Favorite Oscar Winner

As we head towards Oscar's 100th year, I thought it might be fun to talk about the best years of the Oscar experience from our own personal perspectives. What was the most fun? What winner felt the most satisfying? Which ceremony do you remember? Did you ever jump out of your seat and scream? The Oscars have been so somber of late, especially in the past few years. Much of that is the giant sucking sound of fun leaving so much of our culture of late. Everyone just seems angry, paranoid, bitter, and punitive. Not a lot of giving people...
