Catching Up with ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell’

A flurry of news appeared over the holidays related to BBC One’s upcoming and much-anticipated (by me) television adaption of Susanna Clarke’s Hugo-winning novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Originally published in 2004, the novel reimagines British history during the Napoleonic wars with the titular characters and magic at its fantastical center.

It will join a menagerie of upcoming costume dramas on the network including Cider with Rosie, The Go-Between, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

BBC One first announced the project in 2012 as a mini-series event to be directed by Toby Haynes (Sherlock, Doctor Who). The series stars Eddie Marsan (The World’s End, Ray Donovan) as Mr. Norrell and Bertie Carvel (Les Miserables, Matilda) as Jonathan Strange.

The series will air in 2015 on BBC America.
