Golden Globes

Who will be the 2017 Golden Globe ingenue? Joey Moser looks at the possible candidates.

The 2017 Golden Globe nominations will be announced in three weeks (December 12 to be exact), so people are already predicting who will be nominated for top awards. Last year, I pointed out that the Hollywood Foreign Press usually gravitates to new faces when awarding Best Actress — Television Comedy or Musical. Rachel Bloom excitedly took the podium for The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but is she a shoo-in to repeat? Is there an ingenue or new face that the HFPA is dying to award or will we just see a bunch of returning favorites? Does a new face have a better shot in the Drama category?

If we look at the Comedy or Musical category, we see a lot of faces that we recognize. Last year, Bloom had the advantage of starring in the only musical on television, and we all know how much the HFPA can’t resist a musical. Who are the freshest faces that threaten Bloom’s reign? Well, there aren’t many ingenues in new comedies that could take her down, but there are some strong possibilities.

If anyone should be considered for awards, it’s Issa Rae. Insecure is one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the fall season, and it has HBO’s pedigree behind it. It’s a truly breakout performance, and it doesn’t hurt that Rae is the co-creator of the show. Did I mention that she’s hilarious? The show does feel like Rae’s baby much like how Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was the baby for Rachel Bloom last year. While it feels like other HBO shows like Westworld and Divorce are creating more noise, Insecure should get a bump when year-end lists come out next month. Is a nomination for Rae in this category too good to be true?

waller-bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s performance in Amazon’s Fleabag also feels like it’s destined for awards recognition, but is the show too small to be showcased? We all know that I’m a major fan, so this might be my bias shining through. Both she and the show recently landed at Critics’ Choice, so we know some people are watching it. Mozart in the Jungle netted two Globes last year (including Comedy or Musical Series), and Catastrophe was also nominated despite no love for the performances. Amazon is on their radar.

Rae and Waller-Bridge would be the newest faces in freshman comedies, but let’s take a look at some of the other potential women who could land at the Globes this year.

American Housewife’s Katy Mixon wouldn’t fit in the classic sense of an ingenue, because she’s been around for years in supporting roles. If you may not know the name, you’ve seen her in either feature films like Four Christmases (I’m so sorry) or you might recognize her from Eastbound & Down. It’s great to see her in a leading lady role. Will the Hollywood Foreign Press take notice as well?

I know, I know, but crazier things have happened. Perhaps the HFPA will be interested in checking out Amazon’s Crisis in Six Scenes. It’s Woody Allen’s first foray into television, so they might be plotzing over the idea to nominate his effort. Miley Cyrus hasn’t been on the small screen since she burst out on Hannah Montana so many years ago, but, hey, they might applaud her for returning. Right? They should probably steer clear of the reviews, though. Yikes.

Justice for Bamford.

Maybe there isn’t a threat from a newer, unknown actress in the comedy race this season? Perhaps Bloom will have to defend her crown from other seasoned performers we’ve come to know and love from series past.

Kristen Bell has actually never been nominated for a Golden Globe before (settle dowb Veronica Mars fans!), but that might change with NBC’s The Good Place. She’s been around for quite some time, but her projects have never garnered any major awards consideration. The Good Place is an audience favorite, so she might be able to land a nomination.

minnie-driver
(Photo: ABC)

It was a bit surprising that Minnie Driver didn’t land a Critic’s Choice nomination for her work on ABC’s Speechless, but she could land at the Globes. She was nominated almost 10 years ago for the short-lived The Riches. The show won’t have the all around juggernaut presence like Modern Family did so many years ago, but Driver has received a lot of praise for her work in the ABC family comedy.

adlon
(Photo: FX)

Can Pamela Adlon break through for Better Things where Louie couldn’t? Since Louis CK’s show has only received 2 Golden Globes (both for Best Actor in a Comedy), it’s hard to believe that they would start paying attention to Better Things. I only wish that Adlon could get in, so we shouldn’t compare the future awards success for this show against a completely different one. The Globes have never nominated an actress from comedy on FX, so if she gets in, it will be a small victory for the network.

Sarah Jessica Parker is the definition of a sure thing here. The Golden Globes love her more than they love Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp film collaborations. When she was on Sex & the City (not to bring that up again), she was nominated for every season, and she won 4 times. Even though Divorce is not as light and as her last television venture, Parker should land a nomination easily. Parker is one trophy away from tying Carol Burnett for wins in this category. Who’s ready for some killer Once Upon a Mattress trivia 20 years from now, am I right?

Those are just the formidable contenders in new comedy series, so that’s not counting out the repeat nominees from the past few years. Gina Rodriguez has been here for Jane the Virgin for the past two seasons (winning this category for the freshman year), and it’s crazy to acknowledge that Julia Louis-Dreyfus has never won a Golden Globe for playing Selina Meyer on Veep. Louis-Dreyfus is a lock to get in, but could the tiresome election coverage stop her from winning yet again?

If we turn to the last few years for Best Drama Series at the Globes, we’ll find a lot of cable shows like HBO and Showtime. Netflix has had a contender for the last 3 years, and Starz has popped in every so often–most loudly last year when Outlander landed 3 nods. There seems to be a growing interest in streaming platforms along with their love of HBO and cable programming, but it doesn’t seem like ingenues will play heavily in this year’s Best Actress in a Drama Series race. There might be two exceptions, however.

foy
(Photo: Netflix)

If Claire Foy doesn’t land a nomination for Netflix’s The Crown, I will buy the most British hat I can find and eat it. Foy somehow missed being nominated for Wolf Hall (as Jalal mentioned a few podcasts ago), but she’s front and center in the royal series. She holds her own against Globe winner John Lithgow, and the series has been rapturously received. I expect that The Crown will have a very warm reception with the HFPA, and Foy will deservedly be included.

pitch05
(Photo: FOX)

For some reason, I can’t let go of the possibility of Kylie Bunbury getting nominated for FOX’s Pitch. She’s definitely a fresh face in an underdog type drama, but it feels like the buzz from Pitch has considerably faded since its premiere. It doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. If Callie Thorne can get nominated for Unnecessary Roughness on USA, Bunbury has a chance of getting in.

Is there anyone I missed? Am I reading way too much into this? What female television performance from a new show are you hoping gets nominated this year?

The television portion of tonight’s Golden Globes ceremony ended with Taraji P Henson winning Best Actress in a Drama Series and running through the audience throwing cookies at celebrities. If this isn’t the perfect visual metaphor for the HFPA’s voting process then I don’t know what is. Eight different shows won at the Globes last night and the foreign press produced one of the oddest assortment of television winners in recent memory with two 90s stars, a pop-star, and a show about robots.

Let’s start with the wins that probably had the average viewer scratching their head, Mozart in the Jungle. Globes voters love to award shows no one is talking about on cool networks. The HFPA also loves shows that include musical elements and while Mozart in the Jungle is not a musical it does focus on members of a New York orchestra. The show also had a secret weapon to woo over voters, Gael García Bernal. The HFPA loves international celebrities and Bernal has starred in three foreign language Golden Globe contenders and best drama winner Babel. So, in retrospect of course, voters are going to choose Mozart in the Jungle and take its leading actor along for the ride.

Golden Globes reaction

The other big winner of the night was Mr. Robot. I could have made an argument for why all five of the nominees had a good shot at winning but in the end the HFPA went with the obvious choice. Mr. Robot is the critics’ darling, it is the only new show dominating the guilds, and it has the perfect combination of actors with a well-known actor like Christian Slater and a leading performance from up-and-comer Rami Malek.

2015 was a great year for limited series and TV movies. Fargo returned with even better reviews than season one, American Crime debuted with a thought provoking premise and HBO gave us two great movies with Bessie and Nightingale. So why did the HFPA decide to award the period piece that no one watched, the least beloved season of American Horror Story, and a miniseries about American politics (a subject voters have refused to reward time and time again). I could sit here and fume over the lack of love for Fargo and American Crime but instead of getting mad I’ll just put more pressure on the critics’ awards and the Emmys to right these wrongs.

Last week I wrote an article presenting five crazy scenarios that no one was talking about and three of them came true. I (and just about the entire ADTV team) predicted Rachel Bloom to win for her performance on the CW musical My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and she won. Netflix lost every single one of their television bids and went home empty handed even though they are the streaming network that changed the industry, however I incorrectly predicted they would win over on the film side (damn you Sly Stallone!). Oscar Isaac won for his performance in a miniseries barely anyone watched proving that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has catapulted him into the A-List. The downside of Oscar Isaac winning the Globe is that HBO has continued their winning streak into their 26th year.

Golden Globes reaction

I will admit my biggest mistake (and probably the biggest prediction mistake of the entire ADTV team) was discounting the HFPA’s tendency to resort to star f@#$ing. Like the rest of America the voters fell in love with Oscar Isaac who is quickly becoming the most charismatic man in Hollywood. The foreign press hasn’t voted for American Horror Story since Jessica Lange in the first season but they shockingly voted for Lady Gaga over critics’ darling Kirsten Dunst. Voters couldn’t resist the sex appeal of Jon Hamm even though they have ignored Mad Men for years. Even former Hollywood heartthrob and bad boy Christian Slater had a small comeback tonight as a supporting actor on the HFPA’s new favorite show. I’m kicking myself because I don’t know why I expected the HFPA to be any different this year.

If anything, tonight’s winners taught me to stick with the five golden rules of Globes predictions:

  1. Never underestimate the HFPA’s need to be a trendsetter
  2. International sensibilities dominate
  3. If the HFPA has the chance to get a star on their stage they will take it
  4. A winning show always takes an actor along for the ride
  5. In the words of Globes attendee and Big Brother host Julie Chen “expect the unexpected”

Hopefully I’ll stick to these five rules and be able to correctly predict more than five winners. Predictions aside, I enjoyed the winners from the Globes tonight. The foreign press gave us a reason to talk about shows that weren’t Game of Thrones,  Maura Tierney finally won an award, Cookie handed out some cookies, and at the very least Lady Gaga gave a memorable acceptance speech for a win people are already comparing to Pia Zadora’s infamous win in 1982. Readers, what are your memorable moments of the night? Are there any predictions you are especially proud of?

The AwardsDaily TV crew of Megan, Joey, and Clarence gather late in the night to provide their Golden Globe reactions. We run the gamut of topics from television to film. We talk about Ricky Gervais. We talk about Mel Gibson. We talk about the speeches. We talk about the winners. We talk about the losers. It’s a good ol’ time at the Cooler.

In case you missed them, here are the 2016 Golden Globe television winners. The winner of our AwardsDaily TV pool is our latest expert, Jalal Haddad, who was not invited to join the podcast tonight. It’s not because the 3 M’s are petty bastards. Really. Not even joking.

Thanks for listening as always!

Golden Globe Winners Posted Live as Announced. Live Tweet Links and Widgets Below.

The 2016 Golden Globe winners will be announced tonight in a live NBC ceremony starting at 8pm ET. Ricky Gervais hosts for the fourth time. This is quite remarkable given that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reportedly refused to ask him back after his first gig. Such is life with fake controversies.

Several television series tied for leading nominations. These series include FargoOutlanderAmerican CrimeTransparentWolf Hall, and Mr. Robot. This year could be unique if the HFPA bestows the bulk of its awards on new faces. They often like to do this, but not in record numbers. Outlander seems tipped by most experts to win the big prize and possibly Drama Actress. However, Taraji P. Henson will certainly be a formidable contender. Drama Actor is likely to go to heavily buzzed newcomer Rami Malek for his role in Mr. Robot.

Comedy Series is a bit up in the air with no real frontrunner. Prevailing logic has Transparent winning, but any series could reasonably win. Joey Moser’s theory of Comedy Actress going to the ingenue could prove a winner again. This is Rachel Bloom’s for nomination for her musical performance in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Comedy Actor is filled with famous faces in new performances. Don’t be surprised if Jeffrey Tambor is passed up for a buzzier role.

All of ADTV’s experts’ predictions are available here. Follow us on Twitter as the ADTV gang live tweets the event at #GoldenGlobesADTV. Plus, be sure to check out the film winners over at AwardsDaily’s main page.

So it’s come down to the 2016 Golden Globes ceremony, airing on Sunday night on NBC and hosted by Ricky Gervais. As we discussed on this week’s Water Cooler Podcast, predicting the Globes is an annual thankless task that we here at ADTV so thoroughly enjoy. So, for those of you who didn’t catch the podcast (SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!), here predictions from Clarence, Megan, Joey, and our newest contributor Jalal Haddad (check out his crazy Globe theories before looking at his predictions, though).

Interestingly enough, there is no consensus among the four experts, although newcomer Jalal is definitely the odd man out on a few categories including Musical or Comedy Series, Limited Series, and Limited Series Actress. We’ll see which ADTV expert reigns supreme Sunday night.

Join us on Monday’s Water Cooler Podcast for a recap of the show’s highlights and lowlights as well as our reactions to the winners.

Catch you on the flip side.

Golden Globes

The Golden Globes have always been known as one of the more amusing awards shows because of their ability to booze up their guests and turn the ceremony into more of a carefree party. The Globes can also be one of the more fun awards ceremonies to watch because of their commitment to surprising everyone with wins that seemingly come out of nowhere. Unlike other voting groups, the Globes always find ways to shock viewers with wins like Jacqueline Bisset and Ruth Wilson. Here are five scenarios hardly being talked about that might just happen Sunday evening.

  1. Narcos wins Best Drama Series and/or Best Drama Actor

When predicting the Globes you can never count out the foreign ‘F’ in HFPA. The Foreign Press loves to vote for films and series that have an international appeal. Just last year two of the biggest shockers were Joanne Froggatt (Supporting Actress for Downton Abbey) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Lead Actress in a Limited Series for The Honourable Woman). Even on the film side The Grand BUDAPEST Hotel beat out the frontrunner Birdman for Best Comedy/Musical. Of the five nominees, Narcos has the most international appeal and might just pick up some votes for that alone. Filmed and set in Colombia, Narcos follows the life of infamous drug kingpin Pablo Escabar. Narcos and Wagner Moura also benefit from being the only representation of a streaming show in their categories.

Golden Globes

  1. Rachel Bloom wins Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical

Rachel Bloom has the perfect concoction of every element the HFPA loves. She is the young up-and-comer in a category of three veteran actresses, her show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is in its first season, and she is the star of a musical. The combination of these three elements might be to golden for voters to pass up. In a category over-saturated with veteran actresses like Louis-Dreyfus, Tomlin, and Curtis, Bloom really stands out. The fact that she is in a musical only helps. In recent years the HFPA has nominated musically inclined shows like Nashville, Smash, Empire, and even awarding Glee three wins over the years (not to mention the preference for musicals over on the film side). Bloggers and pundits have been quick to dismiss her because of the lack of a nomination for the series but in a category where most actresses are their series only nomination anything can happen.

  1. Oscar Isaac rides the love for Star Wars all the way to a win for Best Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie

Oscar Isaac’s nomination for his leading role in Show Me a Hero is easy to dismiss. He is the only nomination for a limited series that came and went quietly in August and the Globes don’t necessarily respond well to small projects about American politics. In fact it would have been all too easy to completely dismiss him until you consider his secret weapon, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The HFPA voted on their nominations weeks before any of the members had the chance to see the The Force Awakens. Now that they have all seen the newest installment they might be desperate to get one of the new stars on their stage before any other voting group gets the chance. Voting for Oscar Isaac (even for a role not associated with the franchise) would give the HFPA the chance to say they awarded the member of the Hollywood A-List before anyone else thought to.

Golden Globes

  1. HBO will go home empty handed for the first time in 25 Years

HBO is known for changing the television landscape with breakthrough shows and iconic TV movies and miniseries and because of that they have been amply rewarded throughout awards season. Their ability to campaign with the HFPA has led the network to win a Golden Globe every year since 1991. To put that in perspective myself, Emma Roberts, and Shailene Woodley have never lived in a world where HBO went home empty handed. The big narrative at the Globes this year is clearly the rise of streaming networks like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu which means the winning streak of HBO might be coming to an end. The HFPA cut the number of HBO nominations in half compared to last year and didn’t even nominate them in the TV Movie/Limited Series category that they usually dominate. Don’t be surprised if the HFPA decides to primarily reward streaming networks, forcing HBO to go home empty handed for the first time in 25 years.

  1. Streaming sites will have a big night but Netflix’s only win will be in a movie category

Streaming websites are having their biggest year to date by dominating headlines, critics’ lists, and awards shows. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have a combined 15 nominations at the Golden Globes this year. Netflix, the pioneering streaming content provider, has gained acclaim for shows like House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. This year the leading streaming service faces a lot of competition from streaming and premium networks and could potentially go home empty handed. If The HFPA lets voters look at their ballots and want to reward Netflix in a big way they could vote for Idris Elba for his role in Beasts of No Nation. Netflix made a big gamble this year by producing their first major film and rewarding them with a win in a film category would keep both the Globes and Netflix in the conversation for the changing entertainment landscape.

Obviously it would be impossible for all five of these scenarios to happen. Oscar Isaac can’t win while HBO simultaneously loses. However, all five of these scenarios represent the ways that HFPA voters think and reward the industry. HFPA members love to lead the conversation with their surprising choices and there are dozens of scenarios that could happen that no one is talking about. What “no guts, no glory” prediction are you currently convinced will happen? Let us know in the comments below!

Editor’s Note: ADTV welcomes new contributor Jalal Haddad. He will be contributing television awards analysis in addition to providing his viewpoint on new and returning series through the year. Please join us in welcoming him to the team.

The Golden Globe Awards will be held this Sunday, and there are some perplexing nominees this year. The ADTV gang discussed the strange selections in a recent podcast, but one of the actresses mentioned was not a surprise to me: Rachel Bloom in The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. While the musical comedy isn’t as popular as, say, Orange is the New Black or as overly advertised like Scream Queens, Bloom has one thing going for her: she’s the lead in a new comedy. I’ve always thought that charming newcomers fared very well with the Hollywood Foreign Press, and some go as far as snatching a trophy on the big night. Is Bloom the one to bet on for Lead Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series? Are ingenues the safest bet in the category?

Looking back to 1998, we can see that winners have won in this category for the first or second season. Calista Flockhart won for the first season of Ally McBeal, and the following year Jenna Elfman took it home for the second season of Dharma & Greg. Sarah Jessica Parker dominated Lead Actress for three consecutive years (from 2000-2002), and she picked up her fourth Globe in 2004 for her iconic role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.

Here’s a list of winners in this category since 2000:

2000-2002: Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex and the City; first win was for the second season, and she became a phenomenon in this category. They clearly love Carrie Bradshaw.

2003: Jennifer Aniston, Friends; the only relatively new nominee this year was Bonnie Hunt for Life with Bonnie. Every other nominee had been nominated before.

2004: Parker again, the phenomenon continues.

2005: Teri Hatcher, Desperate Housewivesdebut season.

2006: Mary-Louise Parker, Weedsdebut season; the rest of the category was filled with Desperate Housewives actresses in their second season.

2007: America Ferrera, Ugly Bettydebut season.

2008: Tina Fey, 30 Rock – second season. Both Christina Applegate and Anna Friel were nominated in this category for the freshman seasons of their shows.

2009: Tina Fey, 30 Rock – third season. Debra Messing is nominated for The Starter Wife.

2010: Toni Collette, United States of Taradebut season.

2011: Laura Linney, The Big Cdebut season.

2012: Laura Dern, Enlighteneddebut season.

2013: Lena Dunham, Girlsdebut season.

2014: Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation – Poehler had been nominated for 3 consecutive years, so this win was a big moment for fans considering she barely won anything for playing Leslie Knope.

2015: Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgindebut season.

Of the five women nominated this year, only Julia Louis-Dreyfus is nominated for a series also nominated for Television Series – Musical or Comedy. She has never won for her role of Selina Meyer, so I don’t think she’s in real contention. Gina Rodriguez could very easily repeat, but I feel like the buzz on Jane the Virgin has died down considerably. That brings it down to 3 other women:

Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Jamie Lee Curtis, Scream Queens
Lily Tomlin, Grace & Frankie

Even though Curtis is the best thing in Queens, she should be in the Supporting category. It would be great to see her take the podium as a small comeback, but that show is so godawful I wouldn’t really enjoy the win. Tomlin is nominated for Grandma as well, and Grace & Frankie is beloved by audiences. An acceptance speech from her would be great to see on Sunday night.

Golden Globes Comedy Actress

My money is still on Rachel Bloom. Of the five nominees, she’s the epitome of an ingénue in this category. The HFPA clearly likes to award fresh faces, and she has one thing going for her that no one else has: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an actual musical. While the show itself is not nominated in the Series category (which is really surprising), they do have a soft spot for a little song and dance. FOX’s Glee took Best Series – Musical or Comedy in both 2009 and 2010. Ex-Girlfriend currently holds a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, while both Queens and Frankie are both considered rotten. Bloom has been singled out for her exuberance and her willingness to play a character that not very many people would want to tackle.

The HFPA is one of the only voting bodies that pays attention to The CW (formally The WB), and they’ve nominated actresses that didn’t get anywhere near the Emmy conversation (see Alicia Silverstone for Miss Match, Bette Midler for Bette, Heather Locklear for Spin City). Ex-Girlfriend might be too weird and strange for more “prestigious” awards, but Bloom’s Rebecca Bunch is one of the most committed (and probably should be committed) characters on television. Just because some people raise their eyebrows at her behavior doesn’t mean she’s not worthy of an award.

Statistically, Bloom should stand a real chance of winning. In true Hollywood tradition, she should take it because she’s the newest of the bunch and her series is one of the most original this season. Will Bloom prevail at the Golden Globes? If the HFPA rejects her, just don’t be surprised that she follows them back to Hollywood. I’m totally in her corner.

2016 is upon us and so are the Golden Globes. In the 57th episode of the Water Cooler Podcast, Megan, Joey, and Clarence boldly predict several upsets in the Golden Globes television races. Spoiler alert: it could be a very good night for Outlander. Or not. It could be a banner year for newbies. Or not. With the Globes, you never know. Next up, they take a look at the 2016 Winter/Spring television season and find it to be a bountiful crop. The Three M’s list their most anticipated shows of the upcoming television season.

Note: Megan’s feelings were not harmed during the making of this podcast.

Here are the 2016 Golden Globe nominations for the television categories. Please join us on the next Water Cooler Podcast, posting later this evening, for reaction and commentary from the AwardsDaily TV crew.

The Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 10, and will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Looking at last year’s Golden Globe nominations for Musical or Comedy series, you can see immediately that there is at least one vacant slot for repeat nominations. HBO’s Girls was a bit of a surprise nominee last year given how quickly it faded from popular culture – even though its third season was completely deserving of the nomination. This year, Girls isn’t getting back in for its decent fourth season. There’s literally no arguing about that one. So, what else is repeating?

Here are last year’s nominees:

  • Girls
  • Jane the Virgin
  • Orange is the New Black
  • Silicon Valley
  • Transparent

Assuming the second season of Amazon’s Transparent is eligible this year (the official drop date is December 11 – one day after the Globe nominations), then it is the mostsilicon-sand-hill likely to repeat. Early word on the season is that it retains all of the charms and brilliance of its freshman season. Next up is HBO’s buzzy comedy Silicon Valley which made a splash at this year’s Emmy Awards in terms of nominations. Season two is arguably funnier than season one, so it’s likely to repeat here as well.

The two wild cards for repeat nominations are the CW’s Jane the Virgin and Netflix’s Orange is the New BlackBlack is more likely to show up again as the Globes have been big supporters of the dramedy even nominating Taylor Schilling in the Musical or Comedy Actress category last year. Jane the Virgin feels very on the bubble right now as its buzz was bigger last year. It’s not that the series has seen a particular decline in quality from season to season, but it’s perhaps not as sexy of a show this year after last year’s coronation of lead Gina Rodriguez.

So, whatever the open slots, what is lining up for replacement contention?

HBO’s Veep seems the most likely candidate. Even though it surprisingly has never been nominated for the Musical or Comedy award, the recent Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy seems challenging for even the Hollywood Foreign Press to miss out nominating this year. Series creator Armando Iannucci’s final season as show runner perhaps make the fourth season a stronger candidate. Still, even the great Julia Louis-Dreyfus hasn’t won a Globe for her performance as Selina Meyer. Perhaps this is truly a series that simply doesn’t translate to a foreign awards body.

Kimmy SchmidtUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the hot newcomer from Netflix, and it doesn’t hurt to have come from the producing/writing talents of Golden Globe favorite Tina Fey. The Globes showered affection on her 30 Rock, but my advice would be to not translate that immediately into similar affections for Schmidt. The Globes have long loved inside Hollywood comedy, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is more of an absurdist comedy that could be deemed silly by the HFPA. I could see Ellie Kemper or Tituss Burgess getting in before the series itself. Still, the Hollywood Foreign Press does love some Tina Fey… We’ll see how deeply that love goes on Thursday.

masterAziz Ansari’s Master of None is contention, but it remains to be seen how the series will be taken by awards voting bodies. Ansari is a likely Actor nominee, but that nomination could be the sole recognition for the series itself. It all depends on how much campaigning Netflix has done with the HFPA to get its new series seen and taken seriously (as a comedy). Go with Ansari with the series becoming a longer shot.

The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the longest of shots as well, but you can’t completely rule it out. It is, after all, a musical. The Hollywood Foreign Press has been known to nominate worst things because they specifically fit that description, although that really is mostly in the film categories (ahem, Annie). Still, there really aren’t a lot of musical series on television, so who knows if they’ll go for it or not.

Farther down the list are such titles as The Last Man on EarthCasualThe GrinderThe Big Bang TheoryModern FamilyScream QueensBrooklyn Nine-NineCatastropheBallers, or Grace & Frankie. None of those feel likely to fit in due to either waning quality (Last Man on EarthModern Family) or simply aren’t big enough to merit the nomination (Brooklyn Nine-Nine or The Grinder). Catastrophe might be one to look outScreamQueens for, though, given that it originally aired in the U.K. and has already had a second season in the can. Plus, it’s just really funny and charming, and sometimes the HFPA actually get it right and pick winners.

If they nominate Scream Queens for Musical or Comedy Series, then may the full vitriol of the
Internet rain down upon them. They would surely deserve it.

Be sure to check back with us on Thursday when the Hollywood Foreign Press announces their nominations for multiple television and film categories. We’ll also be discussing the nomination’s surprises and disappointments on the following Monday’s Water Cooler Podcast.
