Awards Daily’s Marshall Flores joins the Cooler gang for a deep-dive into the box office record-breaking horror film IT, based on Stephen King’s novel.

This week at the Water Cooler, we’re putting the Emmys on pause to deep-dive into the new film IT. Directed by Andy Muschietti, IT adapts the youth-centered portions of the 1986 Stephen King novel with subsequent films dedicated to the adult story. We’ve invited Awards Daily’s Marshall Flores to float with us as an expert on the novel. We talk about what the film does right and what trips it up (CAUTION: SPOILERS). Plus, does the 1990 ABC miniseries get any points over the new adaptation?

Kicking off this week’s TV Tidbits, Ryan Murphy announced another series this week. Ratched will explore the back story of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s infamous Nurse Ratched. She will naturally be played by Sarah Paulson. Next, Amazon cancelled new series The Last Tycoon and Z: The Beginning of Everything. What’s behind this latest slashing of the Amazon lineup? Then, we’ll briefly talk about the big output from the first batch of fall film festivals. Which films and what actors emerged on top? Finally, we’ll preview this week’s Emmy® news including Emmy Confidential and a special Emmy prediction podcast.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the television we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

The Cooler Gang revisits the 1990 ABC miniseries Stephen King’s IT in advance of next week’s cinema-based revival. Plus, a fun Mad Libs game!

This week at the Water Cooler, we’re jumping back into one of our longest running series: the TV Flashback. In the latest entry, we revisit ABC’s 1990 miniseries Stephen King’s IT, based on the 1986 novel by King. Only one of us had seen the original television event. With next weekend’s release of the bigly anticipated revival, we felt like it was the perfect time to revisit. We’ll take a look at what works, what doesn’t work, and how we feel about the property as a remake candidate. Plus, did Megan overcome her childhood fear of the IT commercials?

In our TV Tidbits segment, we discuss recent Oscar winner Damian Chezelle’s upcoming Netflix project. Then, True Detective Season 3 officially received the green light from HBO. We also have a rough outline of the plot thus far. Finally, I’ll entertain Megan and Joey with my very own television-specific Mad Lib in honor of a returning ADTV favorite.

Megan, Clarence, and Joey kick off their very first Fantasy Football-inspired Oscar draft. Have a listen to our Fantasy Oscar pool Water Cooler Podcast.

Ready to rumble Oscar style? Have you always rolled your eyes at those men who brag about their Fantasy Football picks? You find it silly to think of grown men losing their minds over someone beating them to a key draft selection? Well, we never thought we’d be those people, but here we are. Here comes the Fantasy Oscar pool.

From a cool idea from Megan, the Water Cooler podcast team takes Fantasy Football and gives it an Oscar tilt. Instead of Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady (those are actual people…right?), we are deciding between contenders in this season’s upcoming Oscar race. Annette Bening or Sally Hawkins? Michael Shannon or Matt Damon?

We each pick 5 women and 5 men, and it has to be tied to a specific performance. If someone lands on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter or another prominent publication, they get awarded points. If they land certain precursor nominations, they get even more. We will be publishing or announcing the rules and scoring soon. If you want to listen to who we selected, take a listen to this week’s bonus podcast episode. As of right now, we unfortunately can’t open it up to more participants, but we welcome listeners and readers to grab two Oscar-obsessed friends and play along with us!

The Cooler gang steps back into the film world for Rebecca, the second in our on-going series of Our Favorite Movies Volume 1.

We’re continuing our new series Our Favorite Movies this week at the Water Cooler. Joey has the second pick with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Best Picture winner Rebecca. As with our inaugural pick Sunset Blvd, we step through the film scene by scene as Joey explains what about the film makes it one of his favorites.

TV Tidbits returns this week starting with American Horror Story: Cult. With a new trailer and additional details revealed, what does the first look tell us? Then, we explore the bizarre story that Netflix’s Sense8 may have a second life to live in an unexpected, yet potentially very appropriate, place. Finally, a theater in Memphis pulls a screening of Gone With the Wind. Was the move appropriate or too PC?

The Cooler gang looks at the Writing and Directing Emmy races in our last Phase 2 Emmy deep dive. Plus, we give our own Emmy wishes.

This week at the water cooler, our Phase 2 Emmy analysis continues with an extensive look at the Writing and Directing races. On the drama side, without a Game of Thrones entry for the first time in several years, the field feels wider open than normal. Will love for Stranger Things push the Duffer Brothers into the winner’s circle? Or will the sheer momentum and filmmaking prowess of Westworld push it over the top? Plus, will the two nominated female directors of The Handmaid’s Tale cancel each other out? On the comedy side, is it really just Veep’s to lose? Is this where the Television Academy is most likely to recognize Donald Glover for his Atlanta achievements?

But first, we’re foregoing TV Tidbits this week to each give our one Emmy wish. What performances, series, or craft do we want the Television Academy to recognize the most?

The Cooler gang looks at the 2017 Emmy® guest acting races and surveys the field for front runners and spoilers. Plus, our most anticipated fall films.

Today, Monday, August 14, marks the start of Emmy’s Phase 2 voting calendar. This is the final round of voting for the 2017 Emmy awards. Last week, we started handicapping some of the lesser-covered races with the Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Main Title Theme Music categories. Today, we’re looking at all of the guest acting races. We review each performance and try to predict which ones will take home Emmy gold during the Creative Arts ceremony on September 9 and 10. Is this #JusticeForBarb? Will Carrie Fisher take home an award posthumously? These are notoriously difficult to predict categories. Case in point, last year saw Peter Scolari win for his guest performance on HBO’s Girls when he wasn’t even originally nominated. His win only came after Peter MacNicol’s Veep performance was disqualified.

In our TV Tidbits segment, we revisit the American Crime Story: Katrina saga. After recent news from Anthony Hemingway that the series was in turmoil, Ryan Murphy announced some surprising specifics at a TCA panel. In Emmy news, we take a look at the unexpected nomination of Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones. Clarence posits that she’s a spoiler to actually win. Finally, we step into the world of film to each list our three most anticipated films of the fall movie season.

Be sure to visit Awards Daily TV all week for the latest in our Emmy For Your Consideration posts. We’ll provide interviews with nominees and advocate for our own personal choices as the Television Academy makes theirs. Plus, vote for the 2017 Coolie Awards! This week at the Cooler, we review the nominees for the 2017 Main Title Design and Main Title Theme Emmy® categories, two of our very favorites.

August marks the start of Emmy’s Phase 2 voting calendar. Phase 2 defines the window during which Television Academy members make their final choices for the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards. So, this week at the Water Cooler, we start handicapping some of the lesser-covered races that are near and dear to our hearts. First up, the Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Main Title Theme Music categories have always been two of our favorites. We review each nominated series and predict which ones will resonate most with the Television Academy.

In our TV Tidbits segment, we take a look at this weekend’s Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards. The Handmaid’s Tale and Atlanta each received two wins. Will these wins help solidify their chances at the Emmys? Then, NBC announced at their TCA panel that Will & Grace would not only receive an extended order for its first season but also a second season. Let’s see what Joey and Megan say about that one. Finally, Megan caught up to Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed Dunkirk. We talk about the World War II film and predict its bounty at the 2018 Academy Awards.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the television we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

Be sure to check back at Awards Daily TV on Monday, August 14, for the start of our very own Coolie Awards voting window. That’s right, you can help determine who goes home with the illustrious second annual Coolie Awards voted on by the staff and readers of Awards Daily TV.

The Cooler gang dives into the classic 1950 film Sunset Boulevard for the first chapter in the on-going Our Favorite Movies series.

This week at the Water Cooler, we discuss the first in our new on-going series Our Favorite Movies. Our inaugural pick is one of Clarence's favorite films, Billy Wilder's 1950 masterpiece Sunset Boulevard. We step through the film scene by scene and talk about what makes it a classic. We also gauge Megan’s reaction after a first viewing, and we talk about its modern day legacy as a musical.

In our TV Tidbits segment, we explore the recent news that the highly anticipated American Crime Story: Katrina may not even happen at all. Remember that Versace leap-frogged Katrina just recently with a proposed Katrina start of Jan 2018. Now, director Anthony Hemingway has doubts that the series will continue at all. Then, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon announced a new television series. What effect will this have on a potential Big Little Lies Season 2? Finally, following up from last week’s Confederate discussion, HBO apologized for botching the announcement, but is it too late?

The Cooler gang returns to last summer’s Netflix smash hit Stranger Things in our Stranger Things Revisited podcast. Does it hold up on a second viewing?

This week at the Water Cooler, the Cooler gang revisits an old friend. Last summer, Netflix’s Stranger Things took the world by surprise by delivering an entertaining 1980s nostalgia trip with an emotional punch. We all liked it then (mostly), but none of us were prepared for the path of destruction the Demogorgon would draw across awards season. The series received accolades at the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild and recently received 18 Emmy® nominations. So, what did we miss? We embark on Stranger Things revisited and determine if it warranted a second look. Plus, what path forward does it have with Emmy?

In our weekly TV Tidbits segment, we start with the latest American Horror Story news, including a Season 7 theme and eccentric casting news. Then, HBO and the creators of Game of Thrones recently announced their follow-up series to the Emmy-winning giant: Confederate. We talk about the proposed series, and what it means to a modern audience. Finally, we’ll take a look at some of the biggest TV trailers to come out of 2017 Comic-Con.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the television we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week. Next week, we’re kicking off our newest series Our Favorite Movies with a deep-dive into one of Clarence’s favorite movies Sunset Boulevard.

In this fan-suggested topic, the Cooler gang looks back at their favorite underrated TV shows. Plus, reviews of The Beguiled and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

With the 2017 Emmy nominations under our belt, we wanted to honor a fan-suggested topic. So, we take a step back and look at some of the more underrated and oft-forgotten television shows of recent memory. We start with shows from the 2017 Emmy® season. What great, underrated TV shows do the Academy and viewers largely ignore? Then, we step farther back and consider older series that deserved more attention than they received. Be sure to listen for a controversial pick from Megan!

Returning to TV Tidbits, we talk about the recent news of BBC’s Doctor Who casting its first female doctor. Then, we look at the casting of Alec Baldwin in “the Jack Nicholson role” for NBC’s live production of Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men. Finally, we close with a look at two major summer films: Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled and Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the television we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week. Next week, we’re revisiting Netflix’s Stranger Things, and on July 31, we kick off Our Favorite Movies with Sunset Boulevard.
