HTGAWM: The Age Old Question: “Why is your penis on a dead girl’s phone?!”

ABC promised that the final sentence on this week’s How to Get Away with Murder would be a game changer, and it definitely set social media ablaze with those nine words. Thursday nights are usually full of moments when your jaw hits the floor, but How to Get Away had several gasp-inducing moments. Let’s ask ourselves some other nine-word questions about last night’s episode.

Is anyone else getting distracted by the other cases?
It’s understandable that How to Get Away cannot solely focus on the big mystery surrounding the law students and Sam’s murder. One of the best things about the show is that it very slow and deliberately gives us new details about the students burying the body. In this episode, we find out that Rebecca was actually in Anna’s office with Wes, Laurel, Connor and Michaela. As Wes tries to assure Rebecca that they will protect her, Asher bangs on the door, and he yells that he knows that they are inside. Even if I wasn’t covering up a murder, I’d avoid him too. Asher is such an adorable douchebag.

The action flashes back to Anna introducing a new client. Elizabeth Perkins plays Marren Trudeau, a powerful stockbroker accused of insider trading when a sex tape is released of her making more than a client’s stock portfolio rise. Anna has her team investigate Marren’s employees to make sure it didn’t come from inside. Every episode has a mini case in the middle surrounded by tons of scandal and intrigue. While it’s always well-acted, I find myself scooting closer to my television and hoping for a quickie resolution, so I can find out more about what’s going on with the overall story.

Is Connor fixable or just a hot, sociopathic mess?
Jack Falahee’s Connor was pushed to the forefront of this week’s episode, and that’s a-ok with me. Connor gets to bang a hottie in almost every episode, and I applaud Shonda Rhimes, Peter Norwalk, and ABC for giving us lots of man-on-man action (to be honest, though, I was little taken aback that you can say, “he did things to my ass that made my eyes water” on television). There is an Edible Arrangement in your future, guys.

Connor might be hard to love, because he sort of unravels in this episode. He hooks up with Marren’s assistant, Paxton, and then records a conversation that proves that he set up his boss with two co-workers. When it all comes out, Marren tells Paxton that she treated him like a son, and he jumps out the window to his death (GASP!). Connor confides in Oliver (who assisted him early in the episode), and he breaks down about how he screwed up. That’s now what makes us conflicted in lusting after him, though. When the action flashes forward, Connor has a gleeful anger in the woods. It’s unsettling and kind of creepy. I’ve always criticized friends for lusting after totally unstable characters, and now I am one of them.

Why doesn’t Viola Davis have every single award EVER?!
While Anna’s team tried to found out a traitor in Marren’s office, the Lila Stanguard case continued. Bonnie followed Nate and confronted the police about Sam’s possible involvement in order to get Rebecca’s confession video (GASP!). They ultimately proved that the prosecution coerced a confession. When Rebecca’s bail is lowered and she is able to go home, Wes confronts her about what is on the cell phone that he found in her apartment. Wes gives the phone to Anna, and, while she is disappointed and angry that he didn’t stay away from the case like she instructed.

In the moments leading up to those 9 highly-publicized words, Anna sits at her makeup table and removes her wig and eyelashes and scrubs the makeup off her face. It’s done silently, and it’s reminiscent of Glenn Close removing her makeup in Dangerous Liaisons. Viola Davis is baring herself before she confronts Sam about what’s on the phone, and you can almost hear your heart beating in anticipation. The calm on Davis’ face is like the match being struck before everything goes boom.
