Kennedy and Moye predict the Emmys: Variety/Reality/Animated

In case you’re just joining us, Clarence and I are in the middle of predicting tomorrow’s Emmy nominations. As soon as I sat down to make my own predictions, I instantly regretted suggesting we tackle the reality categories. But…. here we are. Check out our movie/miniseries predictions here, comedy predictions here, drama predictions here and of course complete predictions from Joey and Megan here.

Colbert

Outstanding Variety Series

Moye: SNL or Letterman – flipped a coin. It might be Letterman since he announced his retirement this year and it puts him back in the spotlight, but the Emmys seem to like recent years of SNL to nominate it so I’m going with that.

  • Colbert Report
  • Daily Show with John Stewart
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live
  • Real Time with Bill Maher
  • Saturday Night Live
  • Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon

Kennedy: I wanted to put Letterman in as a sentimental favorite, but even I have to admit he’s not the same as he once was. Besides, it’s all about the Boy Fallon these days and his social media friendly YouTube videos. I hope Colbert wins again.

  • The Colbert Report
  • The Daily Show with John Stewart
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live
  • Saturday Night Live
  • The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
  • Real Time with Bill Maher

Moye: I got nothing. We matched perfectly again here. Do you think there’s any chance for John Oliver’s show to sneak in?

Kennedy: I think John Oliver’s show is too new and is still kind of finding its groove, but I could absolutely see it getting in. I’d rather see him than Bill Maher honestly. Maher comes off as such an intolerably smug prick.

amazing race

Outstanding Reality Competition Series

Moye: If the Emmys had any balls at all, they’d nominate the Juan Pablo season of The Bachelorette simply because he refused to proclaim his undying love for a woman he met on a reality show. His honesty and bewilderment at the circus that is this show cut through all the bullshit and made for the most real moment of a reality show I’ve seen in a while. Not that I watched it… Maybe out of the corner of my eye, but I’ll never admit to that.

  • The Amazing Race
  • Dancing with the Stars
  • Project Runway
  • Survivor
  • Top Chef
  • The Voice

Kennedy: I live in a vacuum where Bachelor/Bachelorette do not exist.

  • The Voice
  • Dancing with the Stars
  • Project Runway
  • Top Chef
  • The Amazing Race
  • American Idol

Moye: I don’t see Idol getting in here at all over Survivor. While I didn’t watch, I heard it was a terrible season. I have to wonder how viable this category really is given the eventual ennui that will settle in around some of these shows (if it isn’t there already).

Kennedy: I hadn’t watched American Idol since maybe the 3rd season and was surprised at how good it was this year… until they picked the wrong winner. So, I don’t know who told you it was terrible, but they’re wrong. Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick and Keith Urban gave good host and I’m sticking with it. Is Survivor really still on TV?

shark tank

Outstanding Structured Reality Program

Moye: I have to admit that I just copied the nominations from last year. I have no idea what half these shows are. I will profess my undying love for Shark Tank.

  • Antiques Roadshow
  • Deadliest Catch
  • Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
  • Mythbusters
  • Shark Tank
  • Undercover Boss

Kennedy: Since we’re being all confessional here, I’ll admit I watch a shit ton of Antiques Road Show. It will lose, but as long as it doesn’t lose to Guy Fieri, I’m fine.

  • Undercover Boss
  • Antiques Road Show
  • Catfish: The TV Show
  • Diners, Dive-Ins and Dives
  • MythBusters
  • Shark Tank

Moye: I literally LOL’d at Catfish. Not to put your pick down – I hardly know better. I just wish I’d thought of it first. I was stunned that Undercover Boss won here last year.

Kennedy: I’m stunned that this is even a category and that people vote on it. Also, my inclusion of Catfish does not mean I’ve ever watched the show or indeed anything on MTV since 1986.

deadliest catch

Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program

Kennedy: Apparently the Emmys love reality shows so much, they’re splitting the category in two this year so as to squeeze in twice the amount of reality show goodness. As a result, each category will probably only have 5 nominees, but what the hell, I’m sticking with six.

  • Life Below Zero
  • Deadliest Catch
  • Mountain Men
  • Wicked Tuna
  • Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan
  • Renovation Realities

Moye: Somehow, I missed the category of Unstructured Reality. I have never heard of any of these shows. Would House Hunters International have a chance here? I call that one “British people buying houses in Italy.” Clearly, I have a future as an TV executive.

Kennedy: Yes apparently you missed the memo on the category split. I’d say House Hunters International has as good a chance as any. If you think “British people buying houses in Italy” is weird, what about Buying Naked? Yes. Nudists buying houses. Remember when channels like TLC and Bravo and Discovery actually aspired to quality?

archer

Outstanding Animated Program

Moye: I have been rather surprised that Archer has never been nominated, so I’m going to predict it this year. It certainly has the buzz. My son watches Regular Show, and I can’t stand that. I’m not sure if Adventure Time would fall into this category or not, but that seems like a huge pop cultural phenomenon. Naturally, the Emmys would ignore it.

  • Archer
  • Bob’s Burgers
  • Regular Show
  • The Simpsons
  • South Park

Kennedy: I’m surprised about Archer too. Honestly, it’s better in every way than most of the candidates for straight up comedy.

  • South Park
  • Bob’s Burgers
  • Archer
  • The Simpsons
  • Rick and Morty

Moye: I almost included Rick and Morty, but I went with Regular Show instead. On a side note, Cartoon Network has ruined my son.

Kennedy: Rick and Morty was one of those wishful thinking picks of mine. I doubt anyone actually saw it. Sorry about your boy. What’s the next stop? Booze and hookers?
