Tom Perrotta On His Newest HBO Limited Series ‘Mrs. Fletcher’

Author, screenwriter, and producer Tom Perrotta joins Clarence at the Water Cooler to talk about his latest project, HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher.

Clarence flies solo at the Water Cooler this week. Fear not, he’s joined by one of his very favorite authors, screenwriters, and producers – Tom Perrotta – for the 255th episode. Tom Perrotta’s work was last seen on HBO in the critically acclaimed drama series The Leftovers. But on October 27, Perrotta brings another creation to the small screen in the limited series Mrs. Fletcher. Starring the great Kathryn Hahn in the title role, Mrs. Fletcher explores the empty nest, independence, gender identity, sex and the #MeToo movement in an enticing and thoughtful seven episodes, each directed by a woman.

Here, Perrotta talks about his original inspiration for the novel, initiated by his own empty next transformation.

“It’s a sad moment but it’s also an opportunity,” Perrotta admits. “You’re not old, but you’re not young either. There’s this new era beginning. That just became the autobiographical impulse for the novel.”

Additionally, Perrotta talks about the evolving sexual revolution which now includes matters of gender identification, a theme that runs through the novel. Perrotta also talks about working with Kathryn Hahn and the sadness about co-star Cameron Boyce’s cut-too-short life.

Be sure to check back with Awards Daily for continuing coverage on Mrs. Fletcher. Until then, enjoy this interview with Tom Perrotta, creator, and co-writer of the HBO limited series which premieres October 27 only on HBO.
