Casting: ‘Big Little Lies’ Rounds Out Major Roles

Big Little Lies, one of the more interesting projects coming soon to HBO, has announced the final major members of its large cast. Based on the enormously readable and absorbing 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty, Lies has added Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) and James Tupper (Revenge) as husband and ex-husband to, respectively, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

The limited run series stars Kidman and Witherspoon as friends and mothers who take a new-to-town single mother, played by Shailene Woodley, under their wing. Bouts of drunken bad behavior, jealousy, and kindergarten mother rivalry eventually lead to murder. The remainder of the cast includes Adam Scott, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz.

With a script by David E. Kelley and direction by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), Big Little Lies is shaping up to be a big event for HBO and will undoubtedly become a major Emmy player given that high-powered cast, much like its 2014 Emmy-winner Olive Kitteridge. It’s a shame, though, that Hollywood couldn’t have found room for this clever satiric property on the big screen as the story holds enough truth and witty insight to merit cinematic treatment.

Filming is set to begin this January with a potential air date in late 2016.
