The Beverly Hilton ballroom was a sea of eye-opening gowns and outfits, it was after all the Costume Designer Guild Awards, an evening celebrating excellence in costume design.

La La Land’s Mary Zophres picked up the award for Excellence in Costume Design for Contemporary Film. Hidden Figures designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus who won for Excellence in Costume Design for Period Film was joined on stage by Octavia Spencer.

Jeffrey Kurland who has worked with Woody Allen on over 15 films was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award. Lily Collins was honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award, and Bob Mackie who has dressed the likes of Cher, Diana Ross, and Carol Burnett was on hand to announce Ret Turner’s Posthumous induction into the Hall of Fame.

Actress Meryl Streep received the Distinguished Collaborator Award from Into The Woods co-star James Corden who jokingly called her, “a complete bitch” after meeting her for the first time and she mistook him for a waiter ordering a diet Coke and Salmon from him. Taking jabs at Trump’s recent comments calling Streep overrated, Corden told the room how Streep wanted to be a costume designer. He joked, “Originally she wanted to be one of you, but she failed which means you can say, ‘I’m better than Meryl Streep.’” Streep honored Albert Wolsky, Colleen Atwood, and Ann Roth in her speech saying, “I do honor your artistry.” She added, “It means a lot to me, and not because I wanted to be a costume designer, which I did, but because my mother really wanted to be a costume designer.” The actress said in her speech. Streep said how much costume design helps her create her characters. “It’s a happy surprise, like simultaneous orgasm or something. Well, maybe it’s not that much fun, but it is a little tiny miracle every time it happens.”

Lily Collins who collected the Lacoste Spotlight Award said in her speech that she has always been a fan of costume design recalled and thanked all the designers she has worked with. “I was 2 years old in England, and I was put in a new outfit one day on set and then I was proceeded to have fake throw up thrown on me. My main concern was my new white shoes. I felt bad for the costume designer. At age 2, my main concern was shoes, so we know I’ve always been into fashion.” Collins said as she collected her award from Matt Bomer.
