Golden Sats Nominees

Posted by Sasha Stone On November - 29 - 2009

The Golden Satellite Nominees come out earlier than any other awards group.  This makes their choices mostly off where Oscar is concerned.  A robust Oscar contender will often make the cut, though, and will be the only common link between these and every other award on down the road to Oscar.  They have so many films represented and can sometimes be a great indicator of the possible contenders.  Some of their choices are really great.  Thanks to Ziyad for posting them:

I assume that they have not seen Invictus, Avatar and The Lovely Bones. Also how come Tarantino is not nominated for Inglourious Basterds? Does A Serious Man have a chance of getting a Best Picture nomination? I think it would be tough for Bright Star to get in though it has fared well here. Emily Blunt’s nomination for Sunshine Cleaning is well deserved.

    2. Sasha Stone November 29th, 2009 at 9:20 am 2

I trust my readers will know not to take the Golden Sats seriously. :-)

    3. bambi November 29th, 2009 at 9:25 am 3

      Lololololol

OK, so, they nominate Bradley Cooper for Hangover but snub Hangover`s bigest story Zack Galifiankisisis(sp?). They nominate Blokamp in BD but his movie doesn`t make any Best ____(insert genre) Picture list. They nominated Zooey but snubbed Joseph in 500 Days of Summer. Very LOL noms indeed.

I didn`t hate it totally, though, because they credited True Blood.

    4. Ryan Adams November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am 4

I think their 10 Best of the Year is a new feature.
Wonder where they got that idea.

    5. bambi November 29th, 2009 at 9:37 am 5

They nominated La Heigl! Take that Leslie Mann! Satellites are so ballsy, aren`t they? Ireelevant but ballsy.

    6. Craig R. Boyer November 29th, 2009 at 9:43 am 6

“I think their 10 Best of the Year is a new feature.
Wonder where they got that idea.”

They had this last year for the first time. They did it before anyone knew the Academy would decide to open up a bit.

      Last year’s list:

      * Ballast
      * Changeling
      * Doubt
      * The Dark Knight
      * Frost/Nixon
      * Frozen River
      * Milk
      * The Reader
      * Revolutionary Road
      * Slumdog Millionaire

    7. Ryan Adams November 29th, 2009 at 9:47 am 7

ah, that’s interesting, Craig. Thanks. I couldn’t find that on their site.

Pretty good list. Ballast is the most underrated and unawarded movie of 2008.

I would’ve swapped Changeling for Benjamin Button.

    8. thelastwarnerbros. November 29th, 2009 at 10:00 am 8

And they nominated Depp and Dancy over Ben Foster in THE MESSENGER, what a snub!

    9. Guy Lodge November 29th, 2009 at 10:02 am 9

The Ten Best list looks especially pointless when it ignores some of the films they actually nominated for Best Picture.

Perhaps appropriately, The Messenger is at the receiving end of a very mixed message.

But hey, picking apart the logical failings of the Satellites is an annual parlour game. And you can’t get too mad at a group that throws a bone to Catalina Saavedra.

    10. Danny November 29th, 2009 at 10:03 am 10

Why is Harry Potter in the animated/mixed media category?

    11. Amanda November 29th, 2009 at 10:03 am 11

I am happy that Emily Blunt got some love and yay for her nom for Sunshine cleaning. However Amy Adams getting overlooked for either Julie/Julia or Sunshine Cleaning and Heigl getting a nom just makes my head hurt. It’s the Golden Sats so i will live.

    12. sheila November 29th, 2009 at 10:03 am 12

Pene nominated two time? Don’t make me laugh, shuch an horrible actress??ha,ha

Where is Michelle Pffeifer? Michelle, we love you

    13. PeterV November 29th, 2009 at 10:08 am 13

What I find fascinating is the Best Director category — three women, and one African American. Wow. When have you seen that?

      Realize they’re a break-away from the GG’s, but still, that’s pretty impressive!

    14. David November 29th, 2009 at 10:16 am 14

irrelevent but nice to see the mentions for THE MESSENGER, THE MAID and DISTRICT 9. Kinda cool for a Sunday morning.

    15. PeterV November 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am 15

Sorry – still analyzing the director category (I know I know – it’s just the Sats. But like all of you, I’ve gone 9 months without any cinema awards. I need to build up muscle for the big ones). In addition to three women, one African American — two gay directors. Holy cow — it’s a regular Benetton ad!

    16. Stephen Holt November 29th, 2009 at 10:26 am 16

Woody Harrelson coming through in Supp. for “The Messenger” and “The Messenger” in Best Pict. Oscilloscope is coming through!

Ben Foster for “The Messenger” is up against Jeremy Renner in HL for Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actor at the Gothams tomorrow night. Could he win in an upset? As HL is also nominated for Best Ensemble there and it will surely win that.

Nice to see Shoreh Agdashloo and Mozhan Marno in Best Actress and Supp. Actress for “The Stoning of Soraya M.” A welcome surprise! Shoreh, of course, was Oscar nominated for “The House of Sand and Fog” so the Academy knows her…

Is it just me or is it a relief to see a list of nominees FINALLY laid out somewhere? It gives a little clarity. Even if it’s faux clarity.

    17. Simon Warrasch November 29th, 2009 at 10:54 am 17

Oh my Gosh! Where the FUCK is Gabby Sidibe, The Lovely Bones (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress…), Invictus (Picture, Director, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon), Helen Mirren & Christopher Plummer, Vera Fermiga, Julianne Moore, Marion Cotillard (Public Enemies), Samantha Morton & Ben Foster (The Messenger), Tilda Swinton (Julia), … I can’t believe it! I can’t!…

    18. Otto November 29th, 2009 at 11:01 am 18

So It’s complicated, the Informant and Julie&Julia, films that are not in their top 10, get nominated for best picture over 500 days of Summer, which IS part of the list?

It’s weird that Sidibe is not nominated for Best Actress. Or Tarantino for his screenplay. And they clearly haven’t seen Invictus or the Lovely Bones. Not a single nom for any of those films.

But whatever, it’s the Satellites, the group that didn’t nominate Day Lewis for Best Actor in 2007.

    19. sephiz November 29th, 2009 at 11:07 am 19

Sidibe is not nominated for Best Actress, but Emily Blunt is. What a joke!

    20. salma November 29th, 2009 at 11:09 am 20

I don’t believe how a dreadful Penelope Cruz performance in such a shallow film(broken embraces) be nominated! And they passed on Helen Mirren in The last station?

And the stupidest of all, deranged, absurd, silly, maniac-> Joseph Gordon Levitt snub. They love the film and yet leave him out. He was everthing about it. Everything!!! Good God, this is not Golden Satellite. This is Golden Sh!T awards. I hope my favorites won’t win anything here.

    21. Olin November 29th, 2009 at 11:11 am 21

      Hold your horses, Bright Star.

    22. Stephen Holt November 29th, 2009 at 11:16 am 22

      Yes, where indeed?

“Precious” is also famously left out completely by the Gotham Awards, which take place tomorrow nigth, as I’ve said. I’m going. I’m excited to see how this all plays out in a front row seat for Awardsdaily, BTW. So I’ll report everything as fast as I can to you all.

I think G.Sidibe being left out of Best Actress is perhaps a preview of things to come.Maybe maybe not.

But Mo’Nique, you see is IN like flint, acting-awards-wise.

Penelope and Emily Blunt BOTH get a double dip. THAT could happen elsewhere, too, esp. for Penelope.

And if Marion C. gets nominated for “Nine”as she is here for her lead performance, her Supporting perf. in “Public Enemies” will likely not be remembered as is the case here.

The Golden Sats. are a splinter group from the HFPA, FYI. And as Sasha said, they are notoriously unreliable. Also, they are foreign press peeps, too, so their choices skew that way.

And if these people aren’t nominating Tilda Swinton, I don’t know about her chances for “Julia.” If anybody was going to nominate her it would be this foreign, wacky bunch.

And as I said elsewhere here NObody seems destined for awards from TLB with reviews like it’s been getting.

And Sandra Bullock nominated for “The Proposal” but NOT the “Blind Side”!?! Lolol…The GG could duplicate that just to get La Bullock to show for their awards!!

      And no Stanley Tucci anywhere…

    23. Harmonica November 29th, 2009 at 11:32 am 23

I’m finding it hard to believe everyone thinks Bradley Cooper is the standout in The Hangover. He was the weakest of the bunch, IMO. Ed Helms and, especially, Zach Galifianakis were so much funnier than him.

    24. lovespike November 29th, 2009 at 11:41 am 24

I think the primary reason Gabby Sidibe was left out was because she in essence already has an award for outstanding new talent. In addition I don’t see a good portion of those best actress nominees carrying over to anywhere else.

    25. allen November 29th, 2009 at 11:41 am 25

I think they just threw it all against the wall to see what sticks, it was more important for them to be first than right

    26. Vermicious Knid November 29th, 2009 at 11:45 am 26

These are at least delightfully batshit, the kind of things we tend to expect from the Satellites. I much prefer them to some of the more lazy awards bodies, like the frankly stupid BFCA and the popularity contest-oriented SAG. But the Golden Globes are slightly more awesome, because Colin Farrell won for In Bruges. This gives the Golden Globes a lifetime pass of awesome, in my book.

    27. fred November 29th, 2009 at 11:59 am 27

So, Cotillard is in the leading category, and Cruz in the supporting category.

And Monique is in, while Sidibe is out.

    28. Otto November 29th, 2009 at 12:03 pm 28

yeah, the Globes did really well last year. Rebecca Hall, James Franco, In Bruges. Their comedy picks were very good. I mean, they did their usual (snubbing Melissa Leo and Richard Jenkins, who are not that well-known), but all in all they are getting better.

    29. Hans November 29th, 2009 at 12:03 pm 29

No love at all for Star Trek? I know I shouldn’t take these awards seriously, but I can’t help but be worried….

    30. Peralta November 29th, 2009 at 12:05 pm 30

      Sheila…

Penélope Cruz might not be a GREAT actress in English language but for SURE you don’t know here work in Spanish…

    31. B-rian November 29th, 2009 at 12:09 pm 31

I Killed My Mother reeked of bad film student.
i feel like we had much better in canada.
      shame shame.

    32. Clayton November 29th, 2009 at 12:13 pm 32

The discrepancies between the Top 10 and the Best Picture lists are odd. Glad to see such a variety of movies represented, though.

Also, for District 9, is the screenplay adapted from Blomkamp’s short film with Sharlton Copley (the name escapes me at the moment)?

    33. fred November 29th, 2009 at 12:15 pm 33

      Nine : 11 nominations

    34. Mike November 29th, 2009 at 12:22 pm 34

Actually I’d say this is one award body that doesn’t care about being ‘first’ or ‘right’. We all bitch about how predictable the Oscars are – how all the awards bodies throw up (literally) the same things because they want to predict rather than reflect their own tastes.

If more award bodies were like this and simply voted what they felt like it would be a lot more rewarding awards season.

      NBR – take note!

    35. Dan November 29th, 2009 at 12:33 pm 35

I see that Up in the Air is in the musical/comedy category. Will it be in contention in the same category at the globes as well?

    36. Jason November 29th, 2009 at 1:42 pm 36

gabby is snubbed but i’m LOVING hugh dancy for adam…such a great performance!

    37. Kezza November 29th, 2009 at 1:47 pm 37

      Katherine Heigl … WTF!!!

Where is Joseph Gordon – Levitt and Tarantino???? What does JGL have to do to get noticed he is a marvellous young actor.

    38. Danny November 29th, 2009 at 1:50 pm 38

I am happy to see cotillard as lead. I can’t stop listeningto ‘take it all’ on YouTube or watching the clip of her singing ‘my husband makes movies’. She looks incredible.

    39. j November 29th, 2009 at 2:15 pm 39

May not mean much, but they have some obvious ones in there, along with certain ones that are not “locked” or even predicted right now that I hope any traction at all would help, also known as: Bright Star/Cornish/Campion/Campion whoo.

6 of usual 10 plus the one that’s been threatening to jump in for a few weeks. Missing: Up (which might not qualify) & 3 they probably haven’t seen.

They love Meryl. Nice to see Catalina Saavedra and no Blind Side. No qualms about Cotillard in lead. Hudson>Cotillard’s song. Nine as ensemble.

Interesting snubs: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, Julianne Moore, A Prophet, Coraline…Viggo Mortensen, Stanley Tucci, Ponyo, Food Inc (but they have it for DVD)

Art Direction, A Single Man. Direct/screenplay matchups: District, Locker, Precious, Bright Star, Education. Not Nine, Serious, Single, Basterds, Up in the Air. So the only films up for Dir/T10/Screenplay are not directed by white men.

TV stuff: Lea Michele & Glee in a field of mostly-Emmy nominees. Only Mad Men & 30 Rock have 2 leads & a series nom as well. Glee also has 2 supp nods. And best guest star.

    40. Rebecca November 29th, 2009 at 3:17 pm 40

What an interesting list for Actor in a comedy, and kind of boring for actor in a drama. I hope that some of the comedy actors make it into the Oscar mix, esp. Stuhlbarg and Damon, who seem like long shots.

    41. sean November 29th, 2009 at 3:19 pm 41

The list in number six could very well have been the top ten movies with the academy last year, if you switched Ballast for Benjamin Button or Changeling for The Wrestler.

@ Rebecca: Where is the list of tv nominees?

I’m loving the love for Nine and Emily Blunt

    42. Craig November 29th, 2009 at 4:04 pm 42

I kinda think that the people on here tend to forget that it is not the jobs of these people to predict or clarify the Oscar race.

    43. Bill November 29th, 2009 at 4:37 pm 43

all Ill take from this is the beginning of the Inglourious Basterds exspress

    44. Joke November 29th, 2009 at 4:42 pm 44

Im sorry, but this must be a joke right?? i mean where in the hell is Viggo Mortensen for best actor in The Road?, where is The Road picture, art direction…Theron supporting actress, where is M Laurent for IB , you’re not gonna tell me that a sluty Nine performance of 8 min will be nominated over a solid haunting performance of Theron in The Road, what a joke..

    45. Darío November 29th, 2009 at 4:51 pm 45

What ever happened to The Lovely Bones and Avatar? I don`t understand the nominations, please….
      Any mistake? It`s believe,
Im sorry my English is very bad.-

    46. salma November 29th, 2009 at 4:56 pm 46

The Road and Charlize Theron should go to hell. You should ask “where is Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Susan Sarandon…?” and then maybe after hundred or more names called there comes Charlize Theron as an actress, bleeeh.

    47. Ryan Adams November 29th, 2009 at 5:03 pm 47

Dario, we think the members of the International Foreign Press who choose the nominees have not seen Avatar or Invictus yet because it is too early.

If they saw The Lovely Bones, I guess they just didn’t like it very much.

    48. Manuel November 29th, 2009 at 5:47 pm 48

I found it weird that IB is not up for Best Picture but listed as one of the greats in 2009???
      Also miss:
A Single Man – best picture
      Melanie Laurent – supporting
      Helen Mirren – actress
      PLummer – actor
      The Road – best picture
      Viggo Mortensen – best actor

    49. Michael November 29th, 2009 at 6:11 pm 49

Some very nice nominations, aside from a couple odd choices (Katherine Heigl for The Ugly Truth – I mean, she did fine and all for that kind of movie, but she’s not worthy of a nomination for her performance anywhere except maybe the MTV Movie Awards). Still, I’m mostly pleased. I love the Emily Blunt nominations. She’s a great actress and was wonderful in Sunshine Cleaning. She looks very good in The Young Victoria. I would love to see her get an Oscar nomination for Victoria. She certainly has a shot.

Also pleased to see Zooey get a nomination for (500) Days of Summer, and James McAvoy for The Last Station.

Sandra is more deserving of an award for her performance in The Proposal than that hokey Blind Side. I like her, but she’s not worthy of any awards for that movie.

    50. RC November 29th, 2009 at 6:18 pm 50

Wow Salma you are so agressive, First Charlize Theron delivred one solid haunting perofrmance in The Road, second i didn’t talked about your beloved Julianne Moore, i said it’s a joke if a slutty 8 min Nine peroformance would be nominated over a terrific dramatic performance of The Theron in The Road, and yes im sorry she deserves it, it’s unfair if she is not, i also mention Mortensen for best actor, The Road picture, art direction adn Laurent….

    51. Aaron November 29th, 2009 at 6:41 pm 51

The nominations are really hit or miss (though Yes! to the Emily Blunt double nomination) but they nailed the TV award nominations. Especially the love for Chris Colfer, Brooke Elliot, and Julianna Marguiles.

    52. Rodrigo JP November 29th, 2009 at 7:19 pm 52

      Katherine Heigl..wtf!

And IB should have been in the Best Pic list

    53. Sean November 29th, 2009 at 7:28 pm 53

Nine isn’t nommed for art direction. That is very suprising to me.

    54. ladylurks November 29th, 2009 at 8:22 pm 54

According to Hollywood Reporter, the head of IPA said that they DID see Invictus and The Lovely Bones, but didn’t like them enough to vote for them. They haven’t seen Avatar.

Their Top 10 list is chosen by the board of directors, while the nominees are voted by the entire membership, thus explaining the discrepancies.

How to explain their eclectic taste is another matter entirely, LOL. But so it always is with the Satellites.

    55. Faux November 29th, 2009 at 8:49 pm 55

RC “slutty 8 min Nine performance”??????

OK, man. I see you love drama over comedy. But I really think both you and Joke (if you’re not the same one) need a watch.

    56. Patrick November 29th, 2009 at 9:01 pm 56

Three women and two openly gay men nominated for Best Director. These MUST be Euro-fueled.

    57. Alan of Montreal November 29th, 2009 at 9:48 pm 57

I’m surprised nobody noticed that while Inglourious Basterds is among their top ten films, it isn’t nominated for best film in either drama or comedy–and there are six nominees in each category!

B-rian–I agree with your comment about I Killed my Mother. It has some nice flourishes and decent performances, but it was terribly overwrought.

I read The Hurt Locker and Bright Star as the first two nominees and was extremely happy at that. Two best films of the year.

The Blunt noms i’m happy with, as well. She’s really good in both films.

Although Katharine Heigl over, say, Rachel Weisz in The Brothers Bloom kinda sucks. If you’re going obscure, why not that one.

PS: Theron is really good in The Road.

    60. Sébastian November 30th, 2009 at 1:24 am 60

I found that the official nominees site is “missing”, and it only appear “The Nominees for the 2009 14th Annual SATELLITE™ Awards will be announced on November 30, 2009. Come back then to see the nominations.”

      Possibly some CHANGES??

    61. Ryan Adams November 30th, 2009 at 2:20 am 61

Sébastian that’s pretty interesting. Very early this morning Sasha and I found ourselves simultaneously posting the nominees based on two different links that could not be found on the International Press Association home page. AD reader, Ziyad, sent Sasha the link she was using, and I had run across my link buried deep in the forums at Gold Derby at 3 a.m.

On the IPA home page all day they kept stubbornly claiming that the nominees would be announced on Monday, the 30th. As Sébastian points out, they’re still saying that. I think the page we were all using was not meant to go live online yet. It was just a draft that got online because someone clicked the wrong button. The fact that the page is a dead link now is even further proof.

Would be fun if the actual nominees change when they “officially” announce today (Monday). Then we play the game all over again. But I think that’s wishful thinking.

As for Invictus and The Lovely Bones being MIA — just because some movies were available to be seen by IPA members, we shouldn’t assume that they all gather together in one theater to do so. Their members are strung out all around the world. These movies are not widely accessible and it’s very possible that not enough members saw them to earn Bones and Invictus enough votes. The same thing happened last year with the near total absence of Benjamin Button. And the year before that the Satellites almost completely neglected There Will Be Blood.

I also hate Penelope Cruz nomination for Broken Embraces, as if there were no better actresses this year. So disgusting! They should get over with this Penelope love, she won the Oscar already and there is no way of another for her so forget about her.

    63. Linda November 30th, 2009 at 2:46 am 63

Nine didn’t get a Art Direction nod ? There are a ton of question marks on that list. But these are the 2nd most not to be taken seriously awards out of them all.

    64. lucy November 30th, 2009 at 3:31 am 64

It is nice to see Emily Blunt nominated remember she won British Actress of the year chosen by BAFTA itself, she could bump out Mulligan out of the top 5 at the Oscars

My top 5 Best Actress predictions:
      Streep
      Ronan
      Mirren
      Blunt
      Bullock

    65. sheila November 30th, 2009 at 4:32 am 65

Yes Peralta, I’m spanish and I have seen some of her spanish movies and it’s an horrible actress who didn’t deserve oscar nor nomination

    66. sheila November 30th, 2009 at 4:48 am 66

And Salma, you have all the reason¡¡¡ Charlize Theron it’s another not very good actress taht won Oscar for being ugly thanks to make up¡

I hope that Up In The Air will go in comedy at the Globes in order that Nine will not win¡

    67. Mark November 30th, 2009 at 9:24 am 67

I loved Ms. Blunt in Sunshine Cleaning. I wonder if she could get a GG nod as well…..

    68. sofia November 30th, 2009 at 2:39 pm 68

      sheila,

Please are you kidding me, Charlize Theron performance in Monster is outstanding, it’s beyond any makeup, you sound like a jealous idiot limited hater, she was Ailen Wurnous, attitude, manners, heart breaks ,controlling every detail, she was haunted, no wonder why she had been appaulsed by all the critics around the world and no wonder why Roger Ebret called it the best perfomrance in history of cinema, and no wonder she won an avalanche of awards around the world, Charlize Theron in Monster is definitely in my top 10 Best actress win of the decade,

Go watch also North Country, The Burning Plain, Battel in Seattle, The Valley of Elah to name a few…one of the best actress of this genertaion a real cameleon who took risks and haunts her characters in each different genre a versatile actress who can do anything.

    69. sofia November 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm 69

Ps: I agree with all of you Theron was very good in The Road.

    70. Michael November 30th, 2009 at 6:16 pm 70

Charlize Theron gave one of the best performances of all-time in MONSTER. I don’t care what anyone says. It has become such an underrated performance.

    71. JR November 30th, 2009 at 6:34 pm 71

Charlize Theron was excellent in Monster. So someone should go and rent the film again.

      #62

Why should Penelope Cruz go away so quickly?. People just don’t win Oscars and go away. They’re careers take off. So expect to see alot of Ms. Cruz. God knows we can’t escape Meryl Streep.

    72. Ashley November 30th, 2009 at 7:06 pm 72

I’m disappointed that they snubbed Whip It and Cheri. Will some award just please, please nominate these two films for something??!! Whip It and Cheri are two of the most underrated films of this year. And where is Brothers on these lists??
