Finally, a screenplay citation for “In Bruges”.
And “Best Overlooked Film” N8.
Strange to think little more than 3 months ago, Slumdog Millionaire was the best overlooked film. Who would’ve guessed this year’s October surprise would be such a pleasure.
What a day for Marisa Tomei, but i think Cruz will win…
Nice to see Dakota mentioned.
I am so happy that someone recognised the young Jamal, Ayush Mahesh Khedekar
[...] to AwardsDaily, ever on the ball, for pointing out yet another set of critics’ awards, this time the Phoenix Film Critics Society. Somebody [...]
Finally an ensemble win for Milk. The best ensemble of the year for sure, well with Diego Luna the one weak link.
@ Lucio: I hope we got at least one acting category without a clear front-runner. Marisa Tomei will be a tough competition for Penelope Cruz, and maybe Kate Winslet too.
Penn, Sally Hawkins and especially Heath Ledger of course can settle back:-) right now (but, of course, this can still change- depending of SAG results).
I don’t think Penn has the Oscar wrapped up at all. He’s not going to campaign for it, he’s not exactly overdue, and one thing the Academy hates are when winners get on stage and make political statements. Anyone really think Penn is going to be on his best behavior? Clint Eastwood isn’t spearheading his campaign this time. My fear is that Milk has peaked before The Wrestler has even opened. For every Daniel Day Lewis (who did give the Best Performance last year) there are 10 Denzel Washington’s (Training Day). Thursday’s SAG Nominations will be key. There are a lot of great Ensemble Films this year and I have a sneaking suspicion that Milk is going to get bumped by Doubt or Revolutionary Road or even The Wrestler. If I am wrong, I will admit it.
I’m beginning to think thats too much. Slumdog now literally has 20-25 best picture awards with poor Wall-E & Milk trailing behind with 2 each. Currently it seems like a no-contest. I think Slumdog has already won more awards by this point than No Country last year.
Slumdog is not sweeping it. I still think it won’t win a lot of Guilds or for that matter even strike gold at Golden Globes. I don’t see it doing too well even with the Academy, in which the actors are the majority.
Can we perhaps get a chart comparing the number of wins for Slumdog and those for NCFOM?
I’m not sure if Slumdog will win The Globes either, especially considering last years Atonement suprise. But I have a feeling it’s gonna win the DGA and the WGA, and if nothing nominations are gauranteed. A SAG nom maybe even, but that’s less likely.
But right now, the overwhelming favorite is Slumdog and I think that’s undeniable. And I also just think that this type of mass public adoration isn’t going to suddenly vanish when the big awards start up. Whatever ends up being the big winner this year, even if it is Slumdog, it will be by a close margin though.
Meryl Streep scores another critics win, wow, I hope to see her with the gold man on 22th Feb. night.
Chris, MILK is the biggest LOCK for an ensemble nomination.
Yes, when you’re wrong you’ll admit it, but you’re wrong now, so just change your prediction and save yourself the hassle.
And while I agree Penn’s not a lock for the Oscar win, he’s far and away the frontrunner.
I am so happy that someone recognised the young Jamal, Ayush Mahesh Khedekar
Me, too. However, I also feel that Slumdog will be popular with the Academy. Actors love emotional trajectory.
And whether or not Marisa Tomei wins Best Supporting (I don’t think she will), the Academy seems to like her well enough to get a nomination.
Sean Penn, who already has an Oscar, has very strong competition from sentimental competitor Rourke.
Most overlooked film: TRANSSIBERIAN
And High School Musical 3 winning ANYTHING is just scary.
@ Dominik
I don’t think Sally Hawkins is a frontrunner of any sort. Her critical adoration means she’ll get nominated. Most years best actress has a clear favorite or is a two horse race, but this year all five nominees will have a great chance at winning mainly beacuse of vote splitting factor.
In Bruges!!!!
I love Marisa Tomei. I still never understood the hate for her winning in My Cousin Vinny when she consistently gives fantastic performances. Look at last year, with Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead…
I do love Cruz though – so it’s really a win-win if either wins.
It sucks, but I just don’t think it’s Kate Winslet’s year this year.
She’ll definitely get nominated, but I doubt she’ll win.
Nice to see Tomei getting some momentum. People made fun of her win for My Cousin Vinny at the time, but over the years it’s become a beloved performance.
Marisa Tomei is a respected and revered actress and she has been around long enough and has given us consistently interesting performances. I know that AMPAS loves her and I would not be surprised if she gets a nomination from them for this performance.
Marisa Tomei is so down-to-earth about her talents, and would just like to be offered a lead now and then. The High School Musical 3 win is because next to nothing Live Action came out that was rated G or PG. I voted for Nim’s Island personally…Thank you for the recognition of the PFCS. We really work hard to give a varied list of winners. Milk was my pick, but Slumdog is pretty great too.
last year NCFOM had 39 nominations/wins with the precursor awards…
currently, slumdog has 22… only 3 away from the wins/nominations that there will be blood had for best pic at the very end of the season. milk only trails behind with 3 less mentions (mind you, slumdog has won A LOT more… but only 3 times has slumdog been mentioned in best pic when milk was not.

it actually makes some sense if you look at it. i could easily see the top 5/6 being the best pics for oscar
You know, The Dark Knight is on so many critics’ top 10 lists, and made the top 10 lists for the American Film Institute, National Board of Review and Broadcast Film Critics. It’s also been nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at all kinds of recent awards. I am starting to think that it’s pretty much locked for nominations in those two categories. Getting a SAG nomination or two won’t hurt it’s chances either.
Seeing the word “lock” reminded me to check in on Sijmen’s Oscar Experiment. If you don’t know what that is, go read! It’s really cool, and he’s been doing it for years.
Anyway, since we’re still pre-guilds, the state of the Experiment is still very messy, especially in BP and BD. But, Sijmen designates certain contenders as “locks,” and he uses mathematical criteria to assign that label. I’m not sure, but I think a score of 10 or higher is what’s needed for “lock” status.
So, here’s who’s locked according to Sijmen:
Best Actor: Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger
Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz
(Best Adapted Screenplay: Slumdog Millionaire) — Sijmen hasn’t labeled it a lock, but its score is through the roof.
the dark knight swept at the austin critics awards!!!
The Austin film critics’ choices are up, too. http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=awardcentral&jump=contenders&id=picture&articleid=VR1117997466&cs=1
I’m glad Tomei won. She’s proven to be an excellent and consistant, real working actress over the years.
What a happy coincidence that it is Arizona of all states that seems so happy to recognize In Bruges – I have relatives there and spent a few months there this summer. And forced In Bruges down everyone’s throats
Oh and thanks for the list Teddy
any idea where In Bruges belongs on there?
