As Sasha tipped us to expect, TDK is #1 for the 4th week in a row. Box Office Mojo charts show Batman poised to kick some Darth Vader ass in a matter of days.

BTW, Dark Knight will end up with around 990 mill worldwide, in other words, less than POTC: Dead Man’s Chest. And as predicted, Titanic’s domestic record is still safe.
i agree, francou, about a list to measure numbers of paying customers. i’d also really like to see a list of actual numbers of DVDs sold. for some reason, they can’t seem to come up with one.
Hi!
I think the relevant parameter would be the number of tickets, no? One would avoid the discussion about adjusting for inflation or not. I read somewhere (boxoffice guru) that when TDK crosses the 500 M$ mark it will have sold 70 M tickets … but I can’t find how many tickets Titanic sold… Would be interesting in my opinion…
Anyway, The Dark Knight is opening in France tomorrow (that’s where I am from), and the wait has been far too long… I’m so excited!!
I would like Clint eastwood play a role in Inglorius bastards, the new Tarantino’s film and play a role in Batman 3.

I think you are right. Thats what happened with Titanic. Once it became the event movie that everyone had to see……it got people into the theatre that never go…and rarely are part of any reliable demographic. The only thing that may stall its approach of Titanic
is the announcement of a DVD prematurely…..since they come out so soon now in comparison to when Titanic was in theatres. I think it was VHS videos then.
I just love the fact that Lucas and Spielberg are being bumped by the new whiz kid on the block.
Way to sound like an elitist, Richard Crawford. While SW is not as good as EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, it’s still great on its own. Movies ARE NOT terrible at the moment (at least, not wit TDK and WALL-E still around), and some of do care (about the good ones, that is).
Who cares. TITANIC was crap. STAR WARS was not good….( the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is the great one). And the DARK KNIGHT….have not seen it yet……but who cares. Movies are terrible at the moment. In Search of a Midnight Kiss is bad toor. I am hoping the Woody Allen is a lot of fun.
as always bop… 🙂

thanks the jack ! 🙂
“hmm tufas..uh or whomever how long did a fan have to wait for a movie to hit vhs/back in that era ???”
There was no VHS back in that era, or movies being shown on TV. You just had to wait for the film to be re-released (which is another thing that accounts for films like “Gone With The Wind”s MASSIVE inflation adjustment).
Not to take anything away from Dark Knight which is awesome and has made a stack of cash and not to give anything back to Pineapple Express which is lame and won’t make anything close to TDK’s figures, this “TDK #1 for the 4th weekend in a row” business is a little misleading.
Isn’t it fair to assume that if PE had been released on Friday instead of Wednesday, that much of the money it made in those first two days would’ve been added to the weekend total? Also, if you track TDK’s numbers over the same 5 days that PE has been in theaters, PE wins 40 million to 35.
Of course, it’s impressive that TDK is even in the same ballpark considering it’s been out for a month, but still. Let’s be clear about what we’re talking about here.
Having said that, Sasha is right about it winning next weekend as well, especially since Tropic Thunder is opening on Wednesday again and this will once again be all over the headlines and it will encourage more TDK fever.
hmm tufas..uh or whomever how long did a fan have to wait for a movie to hit vhs/back in that era ???
sasha hmm i don’t think the four weeks at the top thing is gonna drive any extra box office
will your ‘average’ movie fan even know of this tidbit ???
i think the first weekend record smashing was better for getting the curious out/everything’s so see it now/be the first on block based.
i don’t think four weeks even if it hasn’t happened since 1922. isn’t epic enough to get additional box office fuss… 😉
huh, the novice has spoken. 😉
Well if each one of us and one million of our friends go see it again, we could be the iceberg for Titanic.
I need to see it again. This time on IMAX.
“When Bells of St Marys’ was in theaters, people had two choices: Go see the movie, or buy some bells and ring them in your backyard.”
LMAO!
I think in today’s global market we should also be looking at the worlwide grosses. It will be interesting to see where DK lands on the international charts.
I think Dark Knight takes another weekend and think it will beat Star Wars and begin to threaten Titanic. Now that it has won the box office for four weeks people will REALLY want to see what all the fuss is about, is my guess.
The adjusted for inflation chart also often sees movies that premiered in more bright times, when people had more money, when there was actually an event out of going to see a movie in a cinema screen, some before Tivo, before DVD and even before VHS home video. I mean, I’ve seen TDK once and loved it, and I am entertaining the thought of a second viewing, but why bother? The blu-ray must be about 3 months away and by now its on the smaller screens at my local sad-excuse-for-a-multiplex (4 shrinking screens and so-so audio).
This film stops at around 520 million
And James, wheres my Blu-Ray Deluxe Special Iceberg Anniversary Edition of Titanic in 1080p with Dolby TrueHD 6.1?
T
Another interesting fact: THE DARK KNIGHT will spent a fourth week at the top of the charts. The last film with a four-week-run was RETURN OF THE KING, and that’s over four years ago.
Of course it will make $500mio.
RRA,
You couldn’t be anymore wrong about my opinion of the prequels. There are some of us who liked The Phantom Menace (we both are happy). I will see CW, but I guess my problem is that I watched the Cartoon Network’s microseries on the Clone Wars. While it helped bridge the gap between Ep 2 to Ep 3, I wonder what the benefit is to retread the same material.
I have Ep 3 on my iPhone. As I work out, I listen (or watch while on the treadmill) to it all the time. It is one of my favorite movies of all time.
And yes, it WILL cross the 500 mark. I really see legs on this. A lot of people are pooh poohing the 500 mark. There really isn’t much competition over the next two months.
It’s a valid point SeattleMoviegoer. But while the “adjusted-for-inflation” list gives us another spin on the numbers, it’s equally slanted in its own way.
There are a lot of other factors in the equation that are tougher to measure than ticket prices. Most obviously, there’s no way to adjust for the myriad of entertainment options vying for the attention of people who want to kill 3 hours. 200 channels on TV, videogames, countless hours plugged into our iPods. (Not to mention blogging!)
When Bells of St Marys’ was in theaters, people had two choices: Go see the movie, or buy some bells and ring them in your backyard. Likewise, what do you want to do for fun in 1942? Go see Bambi, or stay home and play with your Thumper? 😎
this just indicates how bloated and unreliable this list has become in terms of discerning what is popular at the box office. today’s box office receipts and smaller audiences makes lists like this poor indicators of what is really on top for all time. more telling is the adjusted-for-inflation list that shows DK under BELLS OF ST MARYS and BAMBI.
Rob, do people much less SW nerds really give a fucking shit about CLONE WARS? Maybe a problem is that you never cared for the people within the prequels, though I gotta admit I dug Lucas’ plotting of how the Emperor takes over the Republic.
BTW Rob, heard that report how Lucas, in his pitch with HBO to broadcast his live action SW series, that he wanted $250 million(!) budget for 13 episodes? No idea if that rumor is true or not, but that’s just fucking insane.
So we all are in agreement that TDK is gonna break through 500, yes?
I think that next week, TDK will overtake Star Wars for overall box office–the same time that Star Wars: Clone Wars takes the weekend box office.
I still think that TDK will end up with approximately $540M. This figure is 25% more than POTC: AWE; TDK has been consistently tracking 25% more than POTC throughout its run. Also $540M is 6 times its second weekend boxoffice (Most blockbusters make 1/6 of their overall in the second week.) Finally it is on the pace with that of Spiderman in these final weeks. A comparison shows about $530M total. (Just some quick mathematical analysis.)
I don’t know, as a total Star Wars geek, I am not excited by this new movie. I will see it, but it is not pulling me in like the live action films.
