The Emmy Awards — Live Blogging and Winners Thread

10:00 – Overall brilliant group of winners. Not easy to be snarky when I have such respect for all that talent — and way too easy to be snarky about the slipshod ceremony itself.

9:58 – Modern Family, Best Comedy Series

9:52 – Mad Men, Best Drama Series

9:50 – I want Temple Grandin to host the Emmys next year.

9:48 – Temple Grandin, Best TV Movie

9:47 – Best Miniseries, The Pacific

9:28 – Al Pacino, Lead Actor, Mini/Movie, You Don’t Know Jack

9:35 – Mick Jackson, Directing Mini/Movie, Temple Grandin

9:28 – Claire Danes, Lead Actress, Mini/Movie, Temple Grandin

9:26 – Adam Mazer, Best Writing, Mini/Movie, You Don’t Know Jack

9:15 – David Strathairn, Best Supporting Actor, Mini/Movie, Temple Grandin

9:08 – Julia Armond, Best Supporting Actress, Mini/Movies, Temple Grandin.

9:03 — ISWYDT this year. George Clooney is to Emmys as Jean-Luc Godard is to Oscars.

6:52 – The Daily Show, best comedy variety series.

6:49 – Bucky Gunts, variety directing, Olympics Opening Ceremony

6:46 – Help us Obi-Wan Gervais, You’re our only hope.

6:40 – Best writing for variety series, Tony Awards.

6:38 – Jeff Probst & Joel Michael first two presenters of the night who aren’t spray-tanned?

6:34 – montage of Variety Series striking for its homogenized sameness.

6:32 – Kyra Sedgwick wins best actress, drama series , The Closer.

6:23 – Musical tribute to cancellations — 24, Lost, Law & Order. The only 3 shows we’ll apparently miss. Feeling of closure enhanced by capping the number of episodes I’ll need watch someday.

6:22 – Steve Shill, Best director Drama Series, Dexter.

6:12 – Bryan Cranston, Best Actor Drama Series, Breaking Bad. 3rd year in a row!

6:10 – Archie Panjabi, Best Supporting Actress Drama Series, The Good Wife

6:04 – Aaron Paul, Best Supporting Actor, Drama, Breaking Bad.

6:02 – Matthew Weiner wins best writing drama series for Mad Men, and gets played off. Because that tribute to reality series was so essential.

6:00 – Interesting use of stock theme music to suck the life out of that drama montage. Made every clip look like an overblown parody.

<5:57> – ah, here we go. The Year in Network TV Drama. My first glimpse of 24 in over 3 years.

5:49 – Top Chef, best reality competition series. Logical followup to Best Comedy Actress. The crazy mix of categories gives you the sensation of flipping through channels without even touching your remote, doesn’t it?

5:45 – Edie Falco! wins lead actress in a comedy series.

5:44 – So John Hodgman has 5 different pre-fabricated quips ready for each category? That makes me sad on several levels.

5:38 – Jim Parsons, outstanding lead actor in a comedy series.

5:34 – Ryan Murphy wins best director of a comedy series for Glee. Disavows any knowledge of Eat, Pray, Love.

5:30 – I feel guilty trying to funny when the presenters are all bombing.

5:25 – Jane Lynch wins Best Supporting Actress for Glee

5:18 – Modern Family best writing for a comedy series – Steven Levitan & Christopher Lloyd

5:13pm – Eric Stonestreet wins Best Supporting Actor for his great work on Modern Family.

5:10pm – Amy Pohler is introduced and sings along with Fallon. It’s an SNL orgy.

Next, a comedy montage. They’re pretending like something other than 30 Rock has a chance in hell.

5:06pm – Jimmy Fallon does his opening monologue, changing quickly into a monkey suit. He’s sweating but seems sort of inspired. Cut to: Susan Sarandon and her top-heavy daughter.

Jimmy Fallon takes an acoustic guitar and starts playing while he chit chats with the audience. And then, all at once, there’s Conan O’Brien.

5pm -Glee opens the show with Jimmy Fallon. Tina Fey makes a guest appearance. The cast of Glee is a breath of fresh air. Jon Hamm and Betty White, “back that mother up.” Oh poor Betty White. They always want her to act like an ovulating chimp.

Jane Lynch splashes kool-aid on Fallon. And steals the show. The cast breaks into a limp rendition of Bruce Springteen’s Born to Run.
