“I don’t want to get into this thing, like I’m bragging about the ’60s. But the one thing I have to say: The music was great. … Music was, at the time, a way into everything, at least for me and for a lot of people I knew, too. That’s the way I first learned about art and poetry and fashion, humor, film. It all came from there.” David Chase on Not Fade Away

“Peter Gabriel and John Cusack on stage together at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. Won’t forget that… ever.” – Cameron Crowe on a once-in-a-lifetime concert.

“It’s my great hope that the message of compassion and friendship, and that kind of being a universal thing that crosses all boundaries -that, to me, is the great thing about the film and the reason it’s stuck with audiences for so long.” Henry Thomas on the 30th anniversary of E.T.

“Yeah, like, we’re both crazy.  He’s bipolar.  I’m an addict who feels worthless about herself and has to fuck someone to feel better, but at the same time knows it’s not going to make her feel better… Addiction is something I find really fascinating, actually.  Like how when an addict gives up something, they have to immediately replace it with something else.  Vitamins, exercise, water…I know a lot about this, by the way, because I watch a lot of daytime TV.” Jennifer Lawrence on Silver Linings Playbook

“Quiet but compelling, emotionally buttoned-up and naked at the same time, Ava DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere, opening in limited release Friday, October 12, is a film about holding still while trying to move forward.” – Marshall Fine on Ava DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere

“One of the stories in the film comes from Jason Robards, who famously fought in the war, was in the Navy. … I worked with him on Magnolia. And he told me the story of coming back. I don’t remember what boat he was on, but he was coming back, and V-J Day was announced, and they’d run out of booze. And they broke into the torpedoes and drank booze [i.e, fuel] out of there. And the way he tells it, he woke up the next morning on the mast of the ship, and an inch either way he would have fallen to his death. And that story just stuck with me as a great story … something to get into the film.

“I think the idea with ethanol is, you put just a few drops and then squeeze as many coconuts or papaya or whatever you’ve taken back with you from the island; sort of 99 percent juice and maybe 1 percent ethanol. You’ll get [a] pretty good buzz.” Paul Thomas Anderson on The Master.
