Gotham Awards Tonight! Preview, Predictions and Live Stream

Tonight the Gothams will go down, with two films going to head to head for the first time – Call Me By Your Name and Get Out. Last night during our podcast, which go up later today, we were sensing that Call Me By your Name was about to take the critics awards, like New York and the National Society specifically. I think there is a pretty good chance it could also win tonight at the Gotham’s and has a decent chance of cleaning up at the Spirit Awards.

Because of the way the awards are set up, with the only director category being the breakthrough director – and they don’t line up with picture usually, director could be down to Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird vs. Jordan Peele for Get Out.

The screenplay award went to Spotlight and then Moonlight, which also took Picture — so we should be watching if there is a match there. Here are the nominees:

Best Feature
Call Me by Your Name
The Florida Project
Get Out
Good Time
I, Tonya

I think Call Me By Your Name will win, but if it doesn’t, Get Out will.

Best Documentary
Ex Libris: The New York Public Library
Rat Film
Strong Island
Whose Streets?
The Work

Your guess is as good as mine but it being New York, maybe the Library doc takes it.

Best Actor
Willem Dafoe as Bobby Hicks – The Florida Project
James Franco as Tommy Wiseau – The Disaster Artist
Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington – Get Out
Robert Pattinson as Constantine “Connie” Nikas – Good Time
Adam Sandler as Danny Meyerowitz – The Meyerowitz Stories
Harry Dean Stanton as Lucky – Lucky

I would think they’ll want to give Florida Project something so I’ll go ahead and go with Dafoe but Franco could easily win, as could Harry Dean in a sympathetic tribute.

Best Actress
Melanie Lynskey as Ruth Kimke – I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore
Haley Lu Richardson as Casey – Columbus
Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding – I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson – Lady Bird
Lois Smith as Marjorie Lancaster – Marjorie Prime

It is down to, I would think, Margot Robbie vs. Saoirse Ronan and that’s a tough call. I’ll go with Robbie, given that she went through the bigger transformation.

Best Screenplay
Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani – The Big Sick
Mike White – Brad’s Status
James Ivory – Call Me by Your Name
Kogonada – Columbus
Jordan Peele – Get Out
Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird

This one will be tough, since they’ll want to award Lady Bird with something and this might be the perfect award. They already love Gerwig, being that she’s been hovering in the indie scene for a while, they clearly loved the movie, she’s nominated for Director so this would be a way to honor that. So I guess I’ll predict Gerwig for this, but if it wasn’t Gerwig – Call Me By Your Name should win it. I guess The Big Sick could too. Get Out might easily win. In fact, they might switch it – Get Out wins Screenplay and Gerwig wins Breakthrough Director.

Breakthrough Actor
Mary J. Blige as Florence Jackson – Mudbound
Timothée Chalamet as Elio Perlman – Call Me by Your Name
Harris Dickinson as Frankie – Beach Rats
Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Travis – It Comes at Night
Brooklynn Prince as Moonee – The Florida Project

Timothee Chalamet should win this, but Brooklynn Prince could give him a run for his money.

Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award
Margaret Betts – Novitiate
Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird
Kogonada – Columbus
Jordan Peele – Get Out
Joshua Z. Weinstein – Menashe

I suppose that Peele has to win here, right? I would think he or Gerwig. Nice to see they have two women nominated for this. As written above – I think it’s possible they split these awards to honor both Get Out and Lady Bird. I just don’t know which way they’ll go.

They will unfold tonight! Be ready. Be very ready.
