Gregory Ellwood over at Hitfix has posted the teaser poster for Precious and wrote the following:
If there is any movie I can’t wait to see again this year it’s “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sappire.” The winner of this year’s Sundance Film Festival’s grand jury and audience award, “Precious” is a powerful dramatic film that has silenced every skeptic I know who has seen it.
Although anxious to see it, this is definitely a film that requires emotional preparation.

I love all the wonderful Precious artwork. Two great posters.
There hasn’t been a misstep in marketing this movie.
I hope people are prepared for the brutality of this film. I could not put the book down, but the story is extremely depressing. I would love to see it up for all the major awards next year, but I have this feeling that the Academy may not touch it (other than a few awards) because of the topic. Incest is very taboo with the Academy, so we’ll see how it turns out. I really interested to see how many scenes Lee Daniels left in that are absolutely revolting in the book.
Thanks to Tyler Perry and Oprah, the future Academy Award winner Monique will get her time to shine. Move over skinny untalented bitches *cough* telenovela cruz *cough* , Mama Mo’ is in the mother*bleeping* building.
Don’t people get bored with repeating the same thing over and over and over?
Nice Precious poster.
Incest gets through the academy, btw… Chinatown. The Sweet Hereafter.
put me on the curious list…
Ugh, Afrika is back and more obsessed with women than ever but just because he’s jealouse of them being women.
I must get the book. This looks like a big contender, at least in acting categories.
I don’t remember if a trailer was posted here on AD but I happen to watch it recently. It was hard not to cry even with such a short clip. Monique will get a lot of praise but I don’t know if she will make it all the way to an actual nomination. We will have to wait and see.
Afrika! Enough with Penelope already!
While this is a film that AMPAS normally wouldn’t touch, once you start this film it grabs you. The word of mouth for the film will be it’s strongest help. Besides, the most brutal scenes in the film are actually tastefully done and brightened by the character of Precious and her humor. The film is not as gruesome as the book because of the fact the book was so small and in Precious’s head. Most audience members actually can take the film. The posters and trailers for the film give a sense of importance and that is one of the best things you can do when promoting a film for award’s consideration. With Oprah behind it, it can increase awareness and that is the main thing it needs for it to become a big contender. Like I said, once you start watching the film it grabs you.
I agree Alfredo! “Afrika” is annoying and biased beyond belief. That being said, “Precious” looks incredible, and I can’t wait to see it.
Give this poster an Oscar of its own plz.
I love the poster. I loved the novel. Hoping, I love the movie. Also, I’d love for Afrika to shut the fuck up!
Afrika,
As I read your *coughs*, I actually visualized you choking to death, that way no one would be subject to your repeated idiotic rants ever again! Better yet, just go back to Afrika. We don’t want you here. I’m black by the way. Jeez, you get on my freaking nerves.
I’d be a lot more interested in the picture if Afrika would fuck off and die.
Karl Malden R.I.P.
PRECIOUS IS AN AMAZING FILM!
i was lucky enough to see it already and my god its amazing.
I am so glad that there is now some money behind it, so it can get a wide release, and hopefully get LOTS of notice from the Academy.
I have said, and will continue to say, Mo’Nique will win an Oscar for this. Its 100% hers to lose.
Found a new Avatar banner from comic-con.

kinda strange. Really hope we get a teaser soon!
That looks like a favorite thus far.

What was that? Zulu or something?
Afrika probably lives in a dark, dank, depressing little basement with only a Kate Winslet night light to keep him company.
That said, Karl Malden’s dead?!
Alfredo
it’s called ENGLISH, something you can barely speak eventhough it is the only language you can attempt to mumble. You even have the audacity to poke fun at the zulu language. It is truly better to be unborn than to be ignorant. Zulu is one of the most complex languages in the world and what is more impressive is a lot of people from the Zulu tribe equally speak English. Then again, why am I wasting my time trying to talk some sense into the head of an ignorant, prejudiced ethnocentric American? I hope you are learning Spanish and Chinese because the state of things are already changing. Idiot!
cameron
um, it’s a night light of her royal HOTNESS BEYONCE GISELLE KNOWLES-CARTER…not Kate Winslet’s LMAO LMAO lol
“…it would be wise if you found something better to do with your time.”
How about you follow your own advice. This thread to created to post your thoughts on a poster for “Precious” yet for some reason you feel the need to bring you Penelope and/or Jennifer Hudson in nearly every post. Is it really called for, Afrika? Please answer that for me. Why bring up *cough* in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with her.
I’m peruvian BTW.
movieman
don’t give me that holier than thou attitude after you are done slinging mud all over the place. I saw your go-back-to-Africa comment but I chose to ignore it. As if it’s ok to make racial jokes just because you are black. If I am going back to Africa, then you should also be backing your damn bags because guess what? your great grand parents are SLAVES from West Africa. The only person who can tell me to leave America is a Native American Indian. If you are not a Native American Indian, then shut the hell up.
FYI, I DO live in Africa with my family. My mum is half American and she recently decided to move back here to spend her retirement days with the rest of her other family.
looks cool.
And sorry for the typos in my last post…I was talking to the cable guy. LOL. I would simply like you to stay on topic Afrika. We understand your disdain for these actresses, why continue to repeat it?
Do you know what you problem is? well at least one of them. You give too much importance in where do people come from, what color there skin are and what language they speak. You are the most racist of us all!
Well Afrika, I wish you resided in an area where there was no internet access. Come to think of it, I’d like your internet access to be terminated more than I’d like the recession to end.
Gosh… Mariah Carey, Academy Award Nominee? I’d stop watching. Period.
T.
I find it rather droll that the House Racist would have the gall to accuse someone of not being able to speak the English language while they themselves are barely able to write in it at the level of competence of a pre-schooler.

and look who is talking about good grammar skills? look at the crap you just wrote? talk about a run-on sentence LMAO. This is the internet not my final thesis for an MFA degree. If you want to see my academic writing, let me know. I’ll show you.
You guys can keep arguing but I’m done. I’ve said what I wanted to say so no need to beat on a dead horse.
Sherri Sherperd doesn’t have alot of screentime but I was hoping there could be some buzz for her too. Oh well, we’ll see.
my god – why do these boards sometimes end in fighting an petty crap?! This is supposed to be about PRECIOUS! Which is a FANTASTIC and moving film.
lets leave it to that please
“…no need to beat on a dead horse.”
Are you kidding me? That statement coming from you is absurd! Get a life you piece of toilet food.
movieman, I refuse to feed your impulses. Go pick a fight with Alfredo instead because as of right now, I am unreceptive to your strategies.
GO MONIQUE!!
Why? We have no reason to fight.
Afrika
The fact remains, you repeat the same thing in 90% of your post. I asked you a simple question, you refuse to answer. I wonder why?
A run-on sentence is comprised of two or more independent clauses, numbskull, whereas mine contained only one. If I were you I would worry less about seeing Precious and more about catching An Education.
TUFAS
LOL. I know right? Mariah’s lifestyle is an epitome of everything wrong with the industry. As I said before, I can’t comprehend why IMPAS is so decisive on awarding mediocrity. Some actresses like Miranda Richardson consistently do good work but they hardly get recognized. When bad to mediocre “actresses” are finally decent in one movie (thanks to the make-up artist), IMPAS rushes to their feet and bows down to them. After Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar, I stopped taking the oscars seriously. A nom for Mariah Carey will only be confirmation.
Hunter
catching an education? catching? yeah, I’m sure erudites like yourself at the pinnacle of American education use phrases like “catching an education”. I don’t mean to brag but FYI you will never be on my level of education. Better luck next time.
[speaking of education, you misspelled "Jennifer." I fixed it for you. - Ryan]
An Education is the name of a movie, dimwit.
“a Kate Winslet night light to keep him company”
DO they actually make these???
Hunter
I seem to be pushing all the right buttons. I love the fact that I have the power to morph you into a stark, raving monster…but then again that might be your character in real life so I shouldn’t take that much credit. LMAO. What you need in your life is a Black Girl. I could be a smart ass and play your own game but I’m better than that. You are unaware of the fact that “Black Girl” is a movie by the late Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene. Let’s start throwing out movies and see who has watched what. I’m sure you are very skilled in the fied of African cinema. LOL
You nicompoops and scallywags, keep up with your aimless prattle about me. Articles of no commercial value; it would be wise if you found something better to do with your time. The fact that you bleed over every single word of mine gives me so much power over you and you don’t even —
[oops, connection interrupted. Afrika, the only time you can pretend to have power over anybody is when I'm not around. -Ryan]
No, no; I am bored with making a fool out of you. Time to pick on someone my own size. Take it easy, Captain Klutz.
Unfortunately, you are making a fool of yourself but whatever makes you sleep well at night and bloats your ego, right? rrrrright. There’s much to be said about someone to boasts of intellectual superiority on the….wait for it, wait for it….INTERNET. LMAO.
I’m curious how well this film will do.
Bad boy Afrika. Is that how you treat your elders?.
Isn’t that what you make all day here, Afrika???

I am wondering too. I think the incest part of the movie might be sooo disturbing it could depress movie-goers too much.
I am not sure I could even watch it.
Back to the movie. I don’t think it will be a box office hit. The subject matter is too heavy. However, it will be a moderate box office success due to support from the African American community. It’s an independent movie afterall so it doesn’t need 100 million at the box office to be a success.
I know what you mean Yvette. Push is a tough book to get threw and if the film doesn’t shy away from anything, it will be disturbing.
I still believe Mo’Nique will be great in it. She’s perfect for the character.
and here’s afrika to start more shit.
And btw, once again I’m loving this poster!
Yea, the poster is great.
Like I said, the film is clever with it’s approach to the subject matter. It makes you feel bad without showing too much.
HAHAHAHA!
Ryan makes me giggle.
Besides the obvious awards contention of the film, with all of the buzz it has, I can see “Precious” being a huge box office hit as well. With these elements: Tyler Perry, Oprah, Monique’s much-praised performance, possible-Oscar contention…I see “Precious” out-grossing all expectations, maybe scoring between 70- 100 million at the B.O. this November. It has a populist, broad-reaching appeal (despite the heavy topics) that will attract youth, middle-aged, and elderly across color lines. The only demographic I see it not naturally appealing to is white males (and all males to an extent).
Obviously I don’t have it down to a science, but I have a hunch.
I think 30-40 million is more of it’s range without nominations. WOM could make it bigger though.
I really hope the Oscar buzz goes to Gabourey Sidibe and not just Mo’Nique. I’m blown away by her just in the trailer alone. I don’t want her to be overlooked just because she’s an unknown. Also, there’s more of a surprise factor with Mo’Nique because we’re used to seeing her as herself and you have less of a sense of how different Sidibe is from the character. My impression watching the trailer was at first that they really found someone who fit the character so perfectly that it was more a great casting choice than anything else. But then I watched an interview with Sidibe on YouTube and she’s completely different. I just really think she should be nominated and hope she gets credit, particularly because she is the star of the movie.

You are very right. I have only seen the trailer as well and she blows me away in just 2 minutes. I am hoping she gets a lot of recognition.
“Mariah’s lifestyle is an epitome of everything wrong with the industry.”
– very much right, with some exceptions, of course.. Not every sexy devil that goes ugly for a role and gets recognition deserves a bad rap, imo.. But, back to Mariah, I’d add.. She is ALSO whats wrong with the music industry. I loved her first albums – Pop-ish, Soul-ish, then she decided she should be a hip hop queen and has been consistently delivering crap since the late 90’s. The Emancipation of Mimi was one of the last CDs I bought. It put me off buying actual physical recordings.
I cannot express my dislike of Mariah enough.
Some model / actresses, like Hale Berry and Charlize Theron, who go ugly for an indie film, and get rewarded, at least them I understand and agree.. Those were magnificent roles and great performances. But Mariah? Please..
Never seen Lenny Kravitz act. Wonder how he pulls it off.
Even so, I am very much looking forward to this movie. I did vote for it on the Top 10 poll elsewhere on the blog.

I can see a Best……….. Screenplay Adaptation nod for the film.
Best Picture material? Of course not.
Oprah has the tendency to push “too hard” for a film to gain recognition; look what happened to 1998’s similarly themed “Beloved”.
Beloved wasn’t good enough. How can it not be Best picture material? Did you see it? Because I have and I think it is. Besides, Oprah has nothing to do with the movie itself and they are not similary themed. Not at all.

In fact, I’ll give you a few reasons that the film can’t be compared to Beloved. I’ve seen the film and I think it has a shot and it’s definitley Best Picture material.
#1. If Precious gets half the box office that Beloved received it will be considered a success. Beloved failed because it had an extremely high budget.
#2. Beloved got extremely mixed reviews, if Precious does better critically than its success will be much greater.
#3. Beloved was much less straightfoward in it’s narrative and content than Precious and involved slavery and the supernatural. Beloved was the reincarnation of Sethe’s dead baby that she killed many years ago. Precious is more hopeful and human. More people can relate to it and therefore will be more willing to stick with it. Beloved was just plain weird to some audience members and that’s more damaging than simply being raw.
Beloved did not fail because of Oprah and it’s Oscar hopes were ruined by the mediocre reviews and limited audience support. Until that happens to Precious we can’t rule it out. Besides, Oprah has nothing at all to do with the film itself. She is just promoting it and that can’t possibly hurt it.
Great poster.
Alfredo, you’re Peruvian too?
Beloved is one of my favorite books and frankly a very hard book to adapt. The movie was good but I was not completely satisfied. As we see sometimes, movies with flaws can give us some truly amazing performances (Marion Cotillard in La Vie en rose). But, that was not the case with Beloved. Oprah was acceptable but not exceptional in it. One has to wonder how someone like Alfre Woodard or Angela Bassett would have approached this role.
Precious is not going to have that problem because (based on the early word) it does justice to, if not enhances, the book. Performances are sure to live up to people’s mental image of the characters. And Oprah’s support is only going to help this film.
Speaking of Oprah, she should have won an oscar for the color purple. The actors in that movie were truly phenomenal and she delivered one of the most powerful performance of the century in that movie. IMPAS will burn in hell for snubbing the big “O”
“IMPAS will burn in hell for snubbing the big “O””
IMPAS maybe, but certainly not AMPAS…
no! dominik AMPAS ( Idiotic Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) will indeed burn in hell for snubbing one of the most powerful performances of the century ( Oprah in Color Purple). Everybody knows why they did it, no need to beat on a dead horse.
Magaly, si soy peruano. Eres la verdadera Magaly Solier o es solo tu nickname?
For the non spanish talkers: Yeah Magaly, I’m peruvian? Are you the real Magaly Solier?
Go Mimi!!
Go Obsessed!!
Go M.O.A.I.A.!!
Go Precious!!
Afrika, while I agree with your sentiment that Oprah gave an outstanding performance in a criminally overlooked film (should have won Song, Actress, and Picture awards that year too)…I would have given the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Margaret Avery for her dynamite performance of “Shug”.
Margaret Avery, Lynn Whitfield, Deborah Morgan, Angela Bassett, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devinne, Jennifer Lewis…these are all wonderful black actresses who have either never been nominated for an Oscar (and should have been!) or were screwed out of a win the year they were.
Some Oscars that The Color Purple lost are among some of the most shocking and stupid snubs from the Academy. Actually, its the first telecast I remember watching. I fell in Love with that song, Miss Sillie’s Blues. Every female actress in that movie deserved an award. But it has aged a bit for me. Those Spielberg Moments…. Why Why Why does he insist in ruining masterpieces.
T.
Where on earth is Angela Bassett? Shouldn’t she have won something by now?
I think Ebert is spot-on in this one.

unfortunately Hollywood doesn’t write scripts for actresses like Angela Bassett so she has to rely on Tyler Perry’s movies to pay the bills.
As for Spielberg ruining classics, Indiana Jones and the crystal Skull anyone? what a hot mess of a movie. A total Mummy 2 and E.T mish mash/ rip off. Some scenes were even identical to scenes in the Mummy 2 ( the spinning pyramids at the final sequences). The fact that Indiana 4 had 76% on RT is clear evidence that a lot of these so-called critics are being bribed into delivering favorable reviews; people should not be surprised at this revelation.
I just read that there are rumors about Indiana Jones 5!!! I hope they are only rumors….They should leave Indy alone before they ruin all those good memories of the first three movies.
