      Cool poster, love the font

Does anyone know when this and A Prophet are released stateside?

    3. Craig Kennedy November 3rd, 2009 at 12:52 pm 3

Great movie, but probably too subtle for Oscar. Police Adjective is 1/22/10. A Prophet is 2/26/10

    4. chrisw November 3rd, 2009 at 12:57 pm 4

      You’re the man, Craig. Thanks.

    5. Ryan Adams November 3rd, 2009 at 1:02 pm 5

Font reminds me of a Bauhaus font from the 1920’s.

Subtle is right, Craig. Friend of mine is from Romania and he didn’t even get that it was a comedy, in large part. I like it a lot and so did Vali, but he looked a little alarmed at me when I was talking about the humor.

    6. Craig Kennedy November 3rd, 2009 at 1:07 pm 6

I’m not sure I’m comfortable characterizing it as a comedy either. It has a very dry sense of humor to be sure, but it doesn’t depend on laughs to pull you through. Not for me anyway, but then it turns out I have a weird idea of funny. I was just now having an argument with someone about why Land of the Lost was awesome, so there you go.

    7. Ryan Adams November 3rd, 2009 at 1:13 pm 7

      “laughs”? No.
I didn’t mean I was rolling on the floor with giggle cramps, Craig. But the humorous intent is clear from the very first scenes in the police offices. It’s the kind of humor I like best: the kind where nobody is trying to be funny.

    8. Craig Kennedy November 3rd, 2009 at 1:17 pm 8

Right, the kind that makes you smile more than laugh out loud.

Terrific film, classy poster. Probably the only way to sell its weird tonal melange.

looks like they are going for the wes anderson style

This does open at the IFC Center (for those NYC AD-ers). I really hope this gets some traction in the foreign circles, big fan of Romanian cinema. 12:08 East of Bucharest & The Death of Mr. Lazarescu two of the 20 best foreign films of this decade.

I found it humourous, and occasionally very very funny – the devastating, absurdly hilarious book scene in particular. It reminded me very slightly of The Lives of Others and The Conversation – except without technology and with no solution.

    13. Ryan Adams November 3rd, 2009 at 6:43 pm 13

As a word nerd, I loved how all the interchanges between characters revolved around defining and redefining the meaning of labels we give to feelings and social concepts. And how it never felt forced or didactic, just flowed from the character’s natural responses.

I’m sorry but this movie just did not cut it for me. I was praying for it to be over.

The more I contemplated this movie, the more I liked it — especially the final sequence. Of course, it didn’t make the Best Foreign Film Oscar shortlist…

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
