Inarritu’s Biutiful with Bardem, Prieto and Santaolalla

Posted by Susan Thea Posnock On October - 19 - 2008

Reader Javier sends this news:

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu’s shooting in Barcelona (Spain) is one of this year’s secrets. It was known that Rodrigo Prieto, who has just worked with Pedro Almodóvar on his imminent new project ‘Broken Embraces’, will be in charge of cinematography and music will be composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, Academy Award Winner for ‘Brokeback Mountain’, by Ang Lee, and ‘Babel’, by González Iñarritu. Morever, these days there was another announcement: the protagonists of this film will be Academy Award Winner Javier Bardem and Argentine actress Maricel Álvarez, very popular in her country. However, almost nobody knows its title and its shooting starting date. I have both answers! The website of Spanish Culture Ministry reports that González Iñárritu’s project will be entitled ‘Biutiful’ (pronunciation of “beautiful”) and he will begin to shoot on October 27.

Thanks for sharing this, Sasha. There has been speculation for months about Inarritu and Bardem working together and now that they are I am thrilled! By the way, the film will be in Spanish. Inarritu has wanted to keep everything about the film a secret and he has done a good job of it. No one knows what the film is about but perhaps we will find out soon.

    So weird… I read “Broken Embraces” as “Broken Embargoes”…. I think I must have a one-track mind.

We will see how he fairs without the script by Arriaga, a great writer is very hard to come by, I have a feeling it won’t be as strong as his first three movies for just that reason, the next movie will show his talent as a director, to see if he is like Alfonso Cauran who can make any movie good regardless of the writing.Still, looking forward to it.

    i love the title…
arriaga is great, but inarritu and bardem know how to pick a good script, always have always will… so im not worried about that, maybe is a script by inarritu, who knows, and the guy is a genius… +prieto +santaolalla??? and im guessing Cuaron and/or DelToro are producing… so this means one thing… masterpiece…

I think that Inarritu wrote the script so that is a really big plus for the film. I wouldn’t worry about he absence of Arriaga (who is great but I think that Inarritu will be great too). And it is being produced by Cha Cha Cha which is The Three Amigos – Inarritu, del Toro and Cuaro. Enuf said!

I’m very excited about this particular project since I believe Iñarritu is an extremely talented director who has always worked with mediocre screenplays. Now that he’s far away from the lack of talent of Arriaga he’ll show what he’s capable of.

For example, Babel was a good movie, yet built upon a crappy, predictable, illogical, clichéed screenplay, thanks to the performances and Iñarritu.

    I’m so excited for this.

I loved all of Innaritu’s movies (including the short films he directed both for the 9/11 movie and the BMW series) until BABEL, which was disappointing for me. I do hope he bounces back.

There was nothing crappy, predictable, illogical, or cliched about Babel’s screenplay. I do agree it was greatly elevated by its powerhouse performances and documentary-like direction with the script being its weakest factor. It would have been a mess if any of one of the roles had the wrong casting. A lot of films try to capture or imitate that naturalistic documentary feel but this is one of the few films that was able to pull it off. I was completely absorbed by the events and felt like I watching snippets of reality; people actually going through dilemmas in their real lives instead of watching a movie. This film has warranted so much hatred from people influenced by that bandwagon who campaigned against this film using false labels and outrageous contradictions. The screenplay was stripped of the usual pretensions. The dialogue was bare bones and simplistic so the thematic and emotional emphasis would be stronger. The characters spoke like real people instead of cinematic figures. There were no grand speeches or statements made, it was up to the viewer to deeply understand and empthathize with the characters and their circumstances. I felt each of the characters pain, anguish, frustration, and distress during each of their tragic circumstances. I also liked its theme of global miscommunication, the absurdity of life, and how seemingly outside events and unrelated characters can have a profound influence on each other without even being aware of it. I also think the effect of the film varies by each individuals experience and perception where you can draw different correlations and connections to your own life and other events.
It provoked a lot of memories and emotions for me from the past and present. I was able to relate to each character though the Moroccan boys storyline hit me the hardest being from that culture and kind of environment. It was a film only a certain kind of person could connect to and I was disappointed that only a minority could connect to it and appreciate it. I thought Babel by far was his best film and it would make my top ten list for the best films of 2006. We need more movies like that. It only seems like the detractors speak up when Babel is mentioned. I am also quite excited by this upcoming project by Inarritu especially considering the casting of Javier Bardem. I am a huge fan of his work and of his two amigos Cuaron and Del Toro. I heard Cuaron and Inarritu might be collaborating on a project with an actor who worked on Babel possibly be involved.

“I think, of all the films this year… maybe “The Hurt Locker” too… “Up in the Air” will be considered the definitive film of 2009 when we look back in 2019. It’s too raw for people to appreciate now. I’m thinking of 1976 when the Best Picture Award went to “Rocky” over both “Network” and “Taxi Driver” which are far superior films, but “Rocky” struck the populist chord (“Avatar”). “Up in the Air” is similar to “Network” in that regard, because it’s taking a very sharp knife to the world it’s trying to dissect, yet still conveys fairly human emotions. In ten years we’ll be thinking, “how did they not pick ‘Up in the Air’ for best picture?” Of course I’m assuming it loses, but maybe it still has a chance… who knows.

I for one was absolutely captivated and riveted by it, and would love for it to get recognition it deserves. Great Film.”
