      Slumdog was a very good movie but how is Dev Patel a supporting actor?

    2. filmboymichael December 18th, 2008 at 8:08 am 2

      Lot’s of love for doubt – I had no doubt….but not much for revolutionary road….sigh….

    3. Jonah December 18th, 2008 at 8:08 am 3

      DOUBT sweep!
      Dev Patel!
      Downey Jr!

      I quite like these lists…

    4. k December 18th, 2008 at 8:09 am 4

      Patel!
      RDJ!
      Winslet!
      Slumdog!

      I have no idea why Patel is being campaign as Supporting Actor. He is definitely the lead actor.

    5. Joao Mattos December 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am 5

      Haven’t seen the movie yet, that’s exactly what I gonna ask. But now, with the support of the actors branch, is clear that “Slumdog” is really strong.

    6. JR December 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am 6

      No Rachel Getting Married for ensemble?. Not very cool.

    7. Jonah December 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am 7

      I still kind of can’t believe, even with all the precursors, that Downey has a chance at a nomination… just abstractly, the idea of an Oscar-nominated blackface performance. I’m not saying he’s not worth it, just that the concept is so surreal haha.

    8. Alfredo December 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am 8

      Taraji P. Henson! Dev Patel! Melissa Leo! No Sally Hawkins! (yes!!!)

      Booo to no love for The cast of The Dark Knight!

    9. Bryan December 18th, 2008 at 8:11 am 9

      No Sally Hawkins?
      No TDK for Best Ensemble?

    10. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 8:12 am 10

      No Tom Cruise, thank god!
      I think Ben Button, Milk, Slumdog and Frost/Nixon are pretty much locked for a best picture nominee.
      The final spot is still open. Could “TDK” get in? I bet “Wall-E” has a better shot!

    11. Joao Mattos December 18th, 2008 at 8:13 am 11

      Winners: “Button” for cast, Rourke, Winslet as lead, Cruz, Ledger.

    12. daniele December 18th, 2008 at 8:13 am 12

      At this point, I believe that Doubt is strong enough to receive all 4 nominations in the acting categories! I have no doubt!

    13. LoyalT December 18th, 2008 at 8:13 am 13

      KATE TWICE!!! I’M A HAPPY MAN!!!

    14. Ross December 18th, 2008 at 8:13 am 14

      The Sally Hawkins and Kristin Scott Thomas snubs are a shame!

      The actual winners could (and possibly will) be:

      ACTOR: Sean Penn
      He has no SAG win yet. A well-liked film.
      ALT. FRANK LANGELLA

      ACTRESS: Meryl Streep
      Some criticize her performance, but come on – lots of people criticized the performances of Halle Berry, Renee Zellweger and especially Annette Bening, all of whom won. Kate Winslet has a film that isn’t well-liked enough.
      ALT. ANNE HATHAWAY – She could be the winner, actually.

      SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger
      A lock.
      ALT. JOSH BROLIN

      SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Kate Winslet
      This will be a really bad choice, since both Penelope Cruz and Viola Davis give more interesting performances, but she’ll win here.
      ALT. PENELOPE CRUZ

      ENSEMBLE: Doubt
      ALT. MILK

    15. Chase Kahn December 18th, 2008 at 8:14 am 15

      This really muddies up the Best Picture race with ‘The Dark Knight’ not looking like a sure thing any more. Those big 4 are still there:

      -Button
      -MIlk
      -Frost/Nixon
      -Slumdog

      But the 5th is now wide open between Revolutionary Road, The Dark Knight, THe Wrestler, Doubt, etc.

      And it’s a shame that Angelina Jolie is taking up a Best Actress slot with such a strong field this year…

    16. movieman December 18th, 2008 at 8:15 am 16

      Wow. There are a couple of surprises. Revolutionary Road is really getting no love outside of Winslet.

      Dev Patel and the ensemble nod shows string love for “Slumdog Millionare”. As it stands now, it’s down to “Slumdog,” “Benjamin Button,” and “Milk” for the win. Oh and I’m not surprised at all about “Doubt”. It’s an actor’s showcase, but I’m still not convince that it’s a best pic nominee yet. I honestly don’t want “Frost/Nixon” in though.

    17. Marvel December 18th, 2008 at 8:15 am 17

      Dis. Gus. Ting.
      Why does Doubt merit 5 nominations? Please someone explain this to me, I’m obviously out of the loop on something important. & granted, I enjoyed Adams more than Hoffman…but seriously? Still, Streep & Davis were expected (& even the former wasn’t entirely undeserving).

      How awesome is the nomination for Richard Jenkins, though? & Leo. Not meaning to start anything: but I’m so glad Hawkins didn’t take her spot. Clearly, they didn’t think Rachel Getting Married was all that, either, which is unfortunate (save for Hathaway, who continues to shine even with the critics). Aside from my own personal preference for Franco over Brolin, the actors know what they’re doing in my eyes.

      I will second Nelson, though: How is the only lead in Slumdog Millionaire considered supporting? I mean, Winslet is one thing, but c’mon…
      I really do hope one day these categories will stop clusterf*#@ing each other…

    18. Nelson December 18th, 2008 at 8:17 am 18

      The dark Knight will be nominated just for the huge achievement it is, but it really doesn’t need the nomination or the oscar to be part of history as much as most this other films. So a nomination is just the icing of the cake for a movie that didn’t set to do half of what it did.

    19. KKR December 18th, 2008 at 8:18 am 19

      God, I hope these are the Oscar nods. They’re fantastic! Yay for Jenkins and Downey!!

    20. Chase Kahn December 18th, 2008 at 8:18 am 20

      No one should look into Doubt too much — it’s the first movie anyone thinks of when they hear the word “Ensemble”. A decent movie with 4 great performances, no Best Picture nomination, although it’s possible.

    21. daveylow December 18th, 2008 at 8:19 am 21

      No Eastwood for Actor.
      Too much Doubt.
      Brad Pitt nom is a waste.

    22. OmarS December 18th, 2008 at 8:19 am 22

      With all for actors nominated, I don’t see how Doubt can loose the Ensamble category.

      The Slumdog noms are a suprise, but like was said before, this shows the support from the actors, meaning it’s defenitley the front runner now.

      I can think the Dev Patel Supporting category thing was explain best with an Atonement analogy: While Briony was the main character, she was played by three differant women at differant stages in her life. Similarly, Jamal is the main character, but numerous actors make up his whole make up.

      Everything else is pretty standard.

    23. Chance December 18th, 2008 at 8:19 am 23

      Boo at no Leonardo, TDK cast, and Amy Adams over Marisa Tomei…just ’cause that’s not the way I predicted it! Lol

    24. Alfredo December 18th, 2008 at 8:20 am 24

      Overall the Ensemble choices are pretty safe and middle of the road. Surprised they didn’t throw us a curve ball like last year when they nominated Hairspray and 3:10 to Yuma.

      Frost/Nixon? really? That film was about two guys. Hardly an ensemble piece.

    25. Sam December 18th, 2008 at 8:21 am 25

      Right on for Angelina. I wish Leo would have took Brad Pitt’s spot. Boo

    26. Joseph December 18th, 2008 at 8:21 am 26

      No Rosemarie Dewitt : (

      Glad for Amy Adams though.

    27. movieman December 18th, 2008 at 8:21 am 27

      Oh and I just realized no Blanchett. I think she still will be nominated for the Oscar before Jolie though.

      And Tomei will be nominated Over Amy Adams, I think.

    28. Ziyad December 18th, 2008 at 8:23 am 28

      So predictable…. No surprises at all.

    29. Ryan Adams December 18th, 2008 at 8:24 am 29

      I’m giddy. 5 out of 6 of my NGNG dreams were granted:

      No Grinch No Glory
      No nom for Sally Hawkins
      No nom for Clint Eastwood
      No nom for Michael Sheen

      No Gossip No Glory
      Angelina Jolie for Changeling
      Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button
      Jennifer Aniston for Marley & Me

      (I screwed up trying to be too cute with that last one. But it was worth it.)

    30. parker December 18th, 2008 at 8:25 am 30

      Michael Shannon misses again.

    31. Larry December 18th, 2008 at 8:25 am 31

      Some observations:

      SAG absolutely has “got MILK,” and it is now almost certain to fare very well with Oscar nominations, inasmuch as the acting division is far and away the most populous. The homophobes at the Hollywood Foreign Press may not find as many kindred spirits at AMPAS.

      Likewise, however, “Benjamin Button” and “Slumdog Millionaire” could also very well take the best picture at the AMPAS ceremony. SAG chose the dreadful “CRASH” over “BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN,” likely because “CRASH” was top-heavy with actors, even in bit roles. But “CRASH” went on to prevail at the Oscar ceremony that year, indicating just how accurate of late (even when SAG too is dreadfully wrong) a predictor of Oscar’s best picture the SAG motion picture ensemble award truly is.

      Representing well AMPAS’ heavy acting division, SAG has become the ultimate precursor and winnowed out this year’s very likely from just those likely. Thus, expect their list of five motion picture ensemble cast nominations for 2008 to precisely mirror the 2008 Oscar best picture nominees.

    32. Ryan Adams December 18th, 2008 at 8:27 am 32

      @Alfredo
      “Frost/Nixon? really? That film was about two guys. Hardly an ensemble piece.”

      Frost/Nixon, Best Embalmed

    33. Nick December 18th, 2008 at 8:28 am 33

      The fact that ‘The Dark Knight’ was snubbed for Ensemble leaves me greatly concerned….

      @ Dominik

      What makes you think Wall-e has a better shot than ‘The Dark Knight’? It wasn’t even nominated for any SAG awards. I’m hoping Batman and Co. do get nominated for BP.

    34. Jonah December 18th, 2008 at 8:28 am 34

      OK, come on, people. “Frost/Nixon” is just two guys? Then how do you explain Sam Rockwell, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and Toby Jones in the film’s trailer? If anything (I haven’t seen it yet) it looks like Rockwell’s character drives the film!

      Go see “Sleuth” and then come back here when you know what a two-actor movie looks like.

    35. Ross December 18th, 2008 at 8:28 am 35

      The Oscar nominees could very well be like this:

      ACTOR
      Clint Eastwood – Gran Torino (they’ll watch the screeners until then)
      Richard Jenkins – The Visitot
      Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon
      Sean Penn – Milk
      Mickey Rorke – The Wrestler

      Clint will get more votes than Pitt on the preferential ballot.

      ACTRESS
      Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married (it’s her or Streep here; am I the only one who thinks she doesn’t deserve to be here?)
      Sally Hawkins – Happy-Go-Lucky (critics helped her a lot, but with no SAG she has no shot at winning! they must be crazy to snub the year’s the most impressive performances, but this group gave Renee Zellweger best actress for Chicago, so…)
      Mellisa Leo – Frozen River (benefits from preferential ballots)
      Meryl Streep – Doubt
      Kate Winslet – RR (or KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS, I bet on THOMAS)

      SUPPORTING ACTOR
      JOSH BROLIN – Milk
      PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN – Doubt
      HEATH LEDGER – The Dark Knight
      DEV PATEL – Slumdog Millionaire (but he could be snubbed, category confusion?)
      MICHAEL SHANNON – RR (I think he’ll be the big surprise!)

      SUPPORTING ACTRESS
      Penelope Cruz
      Viola Davis
      Taraji P Henson
      Marisa Tomei
      Kate Winslet

      I think Adams could be the one hurt by prefential ballots. If she makes it, Tomei is out.

      BEST PICTURE
      The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
      Doubt (or The Dark Knight)
      Frost/Nixon
      Milk
      Slumdog Millionaire

    36. Sean December 18th, 2008 at 8:29 am 36

      Attention Critics!!!! The actors have spoken……no to Sally Hawkins!

      Scott Thomas snub is sad
      Jenkins nomination is great

    37. Bill W. December 18th, 2008 at 8:29 am 37

      Melissa Leo represent!!!!

    38. Christopher December 18th, 2008 at 8:29 am 38

      Yeah for Doubt! For some reason it seems the picture that the onliner’s and bloggers love to hate this year. Dont’ know why. I thought the play was brilliant as well as the film. The performances are perfect.
      Kudo’s to Winslet! I am surprised they left Leo out.
      What’s with Jolie?? I am grateful that Eastwood isn’t on here. Enough is just quite frankly enough.
      The only real person that I find myself rooting for this year is Streep. The greatest Actress of our generation, perhaps ever in film, has only one Best Actress statue?? Well she is definitely deserving this year and I hope that it happens!

    39. Peter December 18th, 2008 at 8:29 am 39

      Alfredo, though I’m not a fan of the flick, ‘Frost/Nixon’ is most definitely an ensemble film… it IS about two guys but the supporting casts play a very heavy role.

      As for the SAG noms reactions, love the ‘Slumdog’ love… I’m just painfully waiting to defend the inevitable backlash that is about to begin….

    40. Joschi December 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am 40

      Shannon and DiCaprio are missin’ … hope for the Oscars….

    41. The Big Enchilada December 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am 41

      Where is Sally Hawkins! Now Anne Hathaway is the frontrunner for the Oscar.

    42. NICOLASILIOP December 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am 42

      the only black spot for me is the ommission of Cate Blanchett, she gets high poits even from the critics that are not in love with the film and/or even those who criticise Brad’s performance as externally-helped bu the technology etc. On the other hand Pitt’s nom says a lot about him gaining ground against Di Caprio(who is also so deserving)I guess it’s the strong field-nature of this year’s race to blame for the absence of Blanchett and Hawkins. I suspect Melissa Leo will be substituted by one of those two, come Oscar time.

    43. Alex Pizziolo December 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am 43

      Kate Winslet nominated for 2 categories!!!!
      Doubt nominee for 5!!!!
      They snubbed Revolutionary Road!
      Great nominations!!

    44. Joao Mattos December 18th, 2008 at 8:31 am 44

      “Patel”, “Patel”, “Patel”, I keep hearing this name, and ask myself: “from where I know somebody called Patel”. Remember jus now: from “Glengary Glen Ross”, Pacino/Rick Roma pissed off with Spacey/Willaimson. “Patel?. Fuck you”, etc.

    45. Sebastian December 18th, 2008 at 8:33 am 45

      Oh Yes !!! SAG loves Kate Winslet…still hoping she’ll finally get what she deserved !

      SAG wants Brangelina…pity Leonardo DiCaprio & Sally Hawkins.:-(

    46. NICOLASILIOP December 18th, 2008 at 8:38 am 46

      Nick, WALL-E wasn’t nominated at SAG for the pretty obvious reason that it DOESN’T have any actors in it in order to be nominated. Hallooo

    47. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 8:38 am 47

      “What makes you think Wall-e has a better shot than ‘The Dark Knight’? It wasn’t even nominated for any SAG awards. I’m hoping Batman and Co. do get nominated for BP.”
      @ Nick: I´m not really surprised Wall-E didn´t receive a best female robot, but joking aside: I really think that Wall-E has the credibility now to get a best pic-nom. The academy will have recognized Wall-E`s win at the LA Film Critics. It has 93 at metacritic (much higher than TDK), and it seems to be the year of the uplifting and comedy pictures – after two years of dark and brutal best picture-winners (which I liked very much, but I´m more into downbeat pictures).
      I bet against TDK.

    48. AJ December 18th, 2008 at 8:38 am 48

      I have one thing to say, boring. Last year we had some surprises but this? Yeah so unexciting, hopefully oscar will do their own thing.

      On another note, Taraji P. Henson is the most nominated actor or actress at the SAG awards. Supporting Actress, Drama Film Ensemble, and Drama TV Ensemble

    49. Jason December 18th, 2008 at 8:40 am 49

      Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, and Milk are locked in.

      Revolutionary Road is finished, Winslet has a greatshot at the double nomination though. I don’t buy Doubt as a best picture nominee, although it could have 4 actors nominated.

      TDK needs the PGA and the DGA to stay alive, otherwise I think it’s falling out of the running. Other than Ledger, it’s not getting much awards love at all. But it’s still in there basically because the other contenders aren’t showing up either.

      The #5 slot might actually go to WALL-E.

    50. Alfredo December 18th, 2008 at 8:40 am 50

      OK I didn’t mean to diss Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Sam Rockwell and Rebecca Hall but C’mon! They could’ve done the film with just Langella and Sheen (which btw I think deserves the nomination more than Langella but that’s just me) that’s how little I felt they contributed to the film. It’s just my opinion. Take it. Leave it. Make sweet love to it. Whatever – where’s my coffee?

    51. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 8:41 am 51

      @ Peter: My insider tip for best actress is not Anne Hathaway, but Melissa Leo.
      And Sally Hawkins will receive at least a nominee- i´m pretty sure, and she totally deserves it!

    52. Wallflower December 18th, 2008 at 8:42 am 52

      DiCaprio gave the performance of his career but they give the nomination to blank-faced Pitt. (His “performance” is an “ensable” in itself! How many actors actually played Ben Button?)

      Then there’s Pitt’s Baby-Mama Jolie getting in over Blanchett, Hawkins and Hathaway? C’mon. Screaming and crying is not acting.

      I thought these voters were actors? I guess anyone can get a SAG card these days!

      I always thought the SAGs were a bit too pretenious and full of themselves. “Female actor”?

    53. Helen December 18th, 2008 at 8:47 am 53

      Sooo happy that the Brange made it!!! so happy for Ledger and Cruz as well.

    54. Sam December 18th, 2008 at 8:48 am 54

      Pitt is the only actor playing Button… with the help of technology. He’s still blank faced and bland. Not award worthy. BOO! Leo DiCaprio should be in his spot. Boo again.

    55. NICOLASILIOP December 18th, 2008 at 8:48 am 55

      Right now the only locks for a B.P. nomination are Milk, Slumdog and Button. I think that Doubt will get showered with acting noms and it will probably be in the top 5 of many Acad. members but in the preferential ballot will be placed in positions 3,4 or 5 thus getting omitted; and two of the following who will have lots of passionate supporters (as enemies) will be thrown for the 2 vacant spots: Revolutionary, The Reader(don’t count it out just yet) and Frost Nixon. Somehow I get the feeling that Frost Nixon won’t get the love that everyone’s expecting. It’s surprising snub would be my
      No guts-No glory predix come Oscar noms time.

    56. BurmaShave December 18th, 2008 at 8:48 am 56

      Rosemarie DeWitt snub is so uncool.

    57. taitzu December 18th, 2008 at 8:49 am 57

      actress category is really preposterous. I am sadly disappointed, course I really hoped they will honor those who need it AND deserve it the most.

      the 2 best performances of the year not nominated ? Hawkins and Scott Thomas did a great job, they could need some publicity, one is a newcomer, the other had a great comeback. What are the SAG for? I nominate who already has the biggest name and biggest press to generate some headline? I mean Hawkins is the critics favourite, can THEY be SO wrong if you don’t believe me that her performance is exceptional?

      WOW 15th nominations for Streep, she won’t get it anyway. Who cares if she’s got 14, 15, 18, 20, 100 nominations? She already IS THE ACTRESS of Hollywood.

      WOW Angelina Jolie made a terrific hysterical performance really any half-good hollywood actrice could deliver. Oh, but wait, she will come to our show, that’s the deal. Who cares about other actrices robbed for their nomination?

      And Kate Winslet. The poor girl was already nominated 3 times in best actress category and she will again loose for sure. Ok, we will make her the next Meryl Streep. And a double nomination always is good and sensetional. No one knows that she is already one of the BIGGEST and BEST actresses of her generation. No, no one.

      At least Mellisa Leo and Anne Hathaway really deserved it, one a newcomer and the other a veteran that already was robbed from one nomination some years ago (21 gramms supporting actress). And HOPEFULLY Anne will get the award thogh I think in the meantime it’s Jolie. I like all nominated actresses, but I ask myself for what those awards are good for? Anyway I can only laugh about the SAG.

    58. Alfredo December 18th, 2008 at 8:49 am 58

      @Wallflower
      Did you even look at the nominees? Jolie AND Hathaway were both nominated. As far as Hawkins’ snub I say great! See. Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone loved Hawkins performance or the terrible movie.

    59. A 2009 SAG nom comm member December 18th, 2008 at 8:50 am 59

      My tally on which of my nominations stuck:

      3 Best Actors
      3 Best Actress
      3 Supporting Actor
      2 Supporting Actress
      2 Ensemble

      Although not all of the people I nominated were picked, I’m pretty okay with the outcome- there truly were more than five impressive performances in each category.

      That being said, I am sad that Rosemary DeWitt and Leonardo DiCaprio (why is he always passed over? he’s fabulous!) and the cast of Revolutionary Road were not given more love.

      Also, the Robert Downey Jr. nod is really impressive considering we were not invited to any screenings of the film and the screener did not arrive until the day the nominations were due (in NY anyway). I happened to see it over the summer and remember having the thought watching it that “my God, he could win an award for this performance” and in memory of that, ended up voting for him. Did that many others have the same long lasting impression?

    60. Tony December 18th, 2008 at 8:52 am 60

      Come Oscar time:

      Clint will take Brad’s place.
      Cate will take Angelina’s place.
      James Franco will take Dev’s place.
      Marisa will take Amy’s place.

    61. Katrina December 18th, 2008 at 8:52 am 61

      Why is there so much bitterness for Brad and Angelina’s nominations? Obviously some people thought their performances were good enough. And it’s not just SAG. It makes me wonder if you people actually saw the movies or are just haters. Boo to you, too!

      And really – you think ACTORS would nominate other actors because they’re on gossip magazines? Actors are egotistical – they wouldn’t want to nominate people who they thought just went by on publicity.

      And taitzu – awards aren’t meant to publicize a film. That’s unethical if people voted for that reason.

    62. Princess of Peace December 18th, 2008 at 8:52 am 62

      Mostly boring choices. But I am happy for Richard Jenkins and Melissa Leo.

      I just don’t understand all the love for Slumdog. Some good acting but there certainly were better ensembles this year. What a lot of hype!

    63. Nick December 18th, 2008 at 8:54 am 63

      Of course I knew Wall-e doesn’t have any actors (besides Fred Willard, who did a great job).

      Okay Dominik. I bet against Wall-e. Guess we’re just going to have to wait and see

    64. SAG Nominations Are Doubtful « Fataculture December 18th, 2008 at 8:54 am 64

    65. slayton December 18th, 2008 at 8:56 am 65

      SO angry. I wonder what’ll happen with Sally now? She’s won virtually ever critics prize, but no BFCA and no SAG nom… hopefully she’ll get in – she’s probably a lock to win the Globe.

      KST might be out of the race now. The Laura Linney & Tommy Lee Jones noms may bode well for her and Michael Shannon – it has shown that AMPAS has been willing to extend a hand to actors who went into the race with a lot of buzz but for whom precursor support failed to materialize.

      I really hope Angelina Jolie doesn’t get nominated.

      Supporting Actor looks boring now. There were a lot of interesting contenders – Franco, Shannon, Walters, Marsan etc. – that probably won’t get a nomination now in exchange for category fraud choices like PSH and Patel.

      Looks like Leo’ll get a nom, thought, which is good.

    66. The Don December 18th, 2008 at 8:59 am 66

      How the SAG chose Dev Patel over Michael Sheen’s brilliant acting in Frost/Nixon, I’ll never understand. Personally, I think Slumdog is decent but not not Best Picture material, in a weak year though……

      My Oscar Predictions:
      Best Actor:
      Mickey Rourke!
      Sean Penn
      Frank Langella
      Richard Jenkins

      5th Spot: Brad Pitt v. DiCaprio v. Eastwood

      Best Supporting Actor:
      Heath Ledger!
      Robert Downey, Jr.
      Phillip Seymour Hoffman
      Josh Brolin

      5th Spot: James Franco v. Michael Shanon

      Best Supporting Actress:
      Kate Winslet!
      Penelope Cruz
      Viola Davis
      Amy Adams
      Marisa Tomei

      Best Actress:
      Melissa Leo
      Kate Winslet
      Anne Hathaway
      Meryl Streep
      Kristin Scott Thomas
      Best

    67. Pierre de Plume December 18th, 2008 at 9:01 am 67

      I think OmarS has hit the nail on the head about Dev Patel being nominated in the supporting category. When more than one actor plays the same character, things enter a gray area where a nomination can go either lead or supporting.

      To me, The Dark Knight didn’t seem to be a likely ensemble nominee. Its chances for a Best Picture nomination lie in other categories.

      Too bad about Rosemarie DeWitt.

      I’m glad to see Downey’s name on the list. Tropic Thunder was too uneven and too complex in its satire to have broader appeal.

      And I don’t think Jolie will get an Oscar nod.

      Glad to see Downey nominated. I think Tropic Thunder’s problem in general is that the film’s satire is too complex to be widely appreciated. The film has as many misses as it does hits.

    68. Cheshire December 18th, 2008 at 9:02 am 68

      I want Kristin Scott Thomas badly!!!

    69. Meeza December 18th, 2008 at 9:07 am 69

      Way to go Richard Jenkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elated that he got nominated for his outstanding humanistic work in “The Visitor”! My favorite performance of the year!

      Meeza as an old man in “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” in the year 2045

      Who won the Best Picture Oscar in February 2009?
      a) The Dark Knight b) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
      c) Frost/Nixon d) Slumdog Millionaire

      The answer is B writes the WWTBAM host Ryan Seacrest in a mirror bathroom! But no! Meeza answers “D” instead, gete it correct, and is a millionaire! Shame on you Seacrest! Yea! LOL! I AM A MILLIONAIRE! I portray McGruff the Crime Dog as part of my job as Education Director of Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County. So does that make me then a “Crimedog Millionaire” LOL!

      Anyway, there is no doubt in my mind that “Sulmdog Millionaire” will take the Oscar Picture statuette! DESERVINGLY SO!!!!!!!!!!! What a cinematic experience! So happy for the SAG noms for Ensemble and Supporting Actor for Patel!

    70. JR December 18th, 2008 at 9:09 am 70

      I am more than happy to see that the actors didn’t think anything of Sally Hawkins’ performance. Now there could be a good chance that she doesn’t get nominated. Yes…I said it. Happy for Melissa Leo!

      The Dark Knight snub was not cool, but we all should have seen it coming…right?. I so did not expect them to snub Rachel Getting Married for ensemble. Talk about a true snub, It’s the ensemble of all ensembles.

      As for the win, It has to go to Doubt. They are not going to nominate all four actors and not reward it Ensemble. Also, has there ever been a film that recieved three nominations or more that didn’t get a Best Picture nomination, because Doubt looks like it may just grab nods for Streep, Hoffman, Adams, & Davis.

    71. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 9:10 am 71

      @ For sure, who knows… I won´t see Wall-E, that´s for sure, cause I´m not the slightest bit interested in it- too cute for me.
      But betting the oscars is unfortunately something totally different than voting for your preferences. By the way, I am the one person who wasn´t blown away by TDK either… I would be happy for The Wrestler, but that won´t happen.

    72. Gregoire December 18th, 2008 at 9:11 am 72

      The SAGs always have at least one weird nomination a year. I think the oddball nomination this year was Patel, but not because he wasn’t worthy. He’s in the wrong category!

      Their TV nominations are a real snooze, although finally Elizabeth Moss is getting some love for Mad Men.

    73. Fidel December 18th, 2008 at 9:12 am 73

      SO NO GUTS NO GLORY, huh?

      I say…if we get similar noms as the SAG for the Oscars, then:

      Best Actress – MERYL STREEP
      This will be interesting as Meryl might finally collect her second Best Actress Award, after winning one more than a quarter of a century ago. Plus she is the only person in the DOUBT ensemble that could potentially win. I don’t think Viola, Amy, or Phillip will, so she will be the win to represent the Doubt ensemble. Oddly enough, if she does indeed win and Anne Hathaway is also nominated, then Anne will lose over her former movie “boss” from Devil Wears Prada. =)

      Best Actor- SEAN PENN
      Similarly Sean will collect his second trophy in the Best Actor race. This win will show support for the film and might end up being just like Capote, where the film was nominated for Best Picture, but the main character performance was truly the most important part of the film, so whether the film goes on to win Best Pic or not, they cannot ignore it. Thus Penn wins for Milk.

      Best Supporting Actress- KATE WINSLET
      This will be the Oscar history Award. Although Cruz and Davis, and heck, even Adams or any of the Rachel Getting Married supporting actresses (if they even get nominated) have given impressive performances this year, the fact that Kate, along with a possible additional nom for Revolutionary Road, has or, I should say, will be nominated 6-7 times for an Oscar and has yet to win, automatically makes her the frontrunner to finally win one and it won be for RR…it will be for The Reader.

      Best Supporting Actor- DEV PATEL
      IF, yes, a big IF, Dev Patel sneaks into the category, he might just win. AMPAS will not be able to ignore an actor that plays the main character of a film that has so far become one of the favorite to win Best Picture. What does this mean for Heath Ledger? He might not actually win an Oscar after all. That would be sad…and I am definitely rooting for him. But…realistically speaking, Dev Patel’s win might not be too far-fetched IF he’s nominated. It will be an upset to be sure, specially since Hugh Jackman is now hosting the Oscars, a win for Ledger would have also meant a victory for the Aussies.

    74. A 2009 SAG nom comm member December 18th, 2008 at 9:15 am 74

      Hey The Don: Michael Sheen was listed as a Best Actor contender, not supporting. If he had been supporting he probably would have gotten more votes (mine included) but the Best Actor category was really tight.

      An interesting note re: semantics and ensemble:

      For film they call this category “Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture”.. it’s a subtle distinction, but one to consider nonetheless when looking at the nominees. To me, an ensemble pick weighs more towards equal time for the different characters whereas an “outstanding performance by a cast” can have true leads.

    75. David December 18th, 2008 at 9:18 am 75

      I want Eddie Marsan badly!!!!

      Do you think if Sally Hawkins wins the Globe she has a chance at getting nominated???

    76. J_Frost December 18th, 2008 at 9:25 am 76

      Happy to see Angelina Jolie , Kate Winslet , Richard Jenkins on the list ,
      they deserved it.

    77. andrew December 18th, 2008 at 9:30 am 77

      If Hawkins wins the Globe, she’s in, last year Johnny Depp wasn’t nommed at the SAG awards and won the Globe, and made it in over Ryan Gosling and Emile Hirsh who both recieved SAG nods

    78. Robert December 18th, 2008 at 9:33 am 78

      I haven’t seen Happy-Go-Lucky so I have no opinion about the movie or the performances, but just judging by history, I think it’s still very possible that Sally Hawkins gets a best actress nomination at the Oscars. That double win by LAFC and NYFC is difficult for voters to ignore. Plus we’ve only had one case in the last 40 years or so (I think) where a performer has won both LAFC and NYFC and hasn’t gone on to get nominated for an Oscar (Bill Murray, Rushmore, 1998). Hawkin’s profile was definitely raised once she won the big crit double whammy, but it didn’t happen soon enough to impact SAG voters that much, who I imagine had already voted by that point.

      Plus SAG voters aren’t just film actors, but TV actors and any performers who have SAG cards, I believe. For whatever that’s worth…

      I’m reminded of Emily Watson back in 1996. She won NYFC and NSFC for Breaking the Waves, she got a Globe nod, but was not nominated for SAG. Yet she made it onto the Oscar ballot. Breaking the Waves was a Love It/Hate It sort of movie, as Happy Go Lucky seems to be.

      Also remember that Angelina Jolie was nominated for BFCA, Globe, and SAG last year but never made it to the Oscar cut. Just saying…

    79. Pierre de Plume December 18th, 2008 at 9:37 am 79

      Dominik, you’re not the only one who wasn’t blown away by TDK. That said, I really liked it, and I think its achievements and appeal are good enough and broad enough to make it a contender.

    80. tdr December 18th, 2008 at 9:38 am 80

      So, so, so mother-fucking happy for Jenkins and Melissa Leo!Yay!
      Angelina needs a compensation from the Academy for last year’s horrendous snub (my opinion, at least). But her performance in “Changeling” dissappointed me a bit. I expected a better follow-up to “A mighty heart”.
      Overall expected nominees (besides the Hawkins snub; and i really thought Clint or Leo would take Brad’s place). Amy Adams is not welcomed at the ceremony (please, God.). Marisa can come.
      And Eddie Marsan’s chances have thinned to a minimum.Probably won’t happen. Sad.

    81. cca December 18th, 2008 at 9:40 am 81

      The main “doubt” I have after these nominations is: Will “Revolutionary Road” be this year’s “Atonement”?.. I mean both showed big at the Golden Globes, but poorly with critics and SAG, but “Atonement” went to score 7 Academy Awards nominations (including Best Picture).. Will “Revolutionary Road” follow its steps?

      As for the “The Dark Knight” I think the SAG nominations show what will happen in the oscars… plenty of “technical” nominations, maybe best director for Nolan, but no best picture nomination. (And I would agree with that)

    82. Paul Outlaw December 18th, 2008 at 9:43 am 82

      Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

      I cannot believe you, SAG. Three nominations for my Button when I truly thought you would pass on this masterpiece. And then the curveball of not nominating Blanchett? I am, quite literally ::scratchhing his head::.

      Bravo, SAG! Three nods for Milk!

      I love you, SAG. You refuse to get on the DiCaprio and Eastwood bandwagons this year.

      I hate you, SAG. Where are the The Wire and The Shield?

      What the fuck, SAG? No Kristin Scott Thomas?

      The good news, SAG? I have over a month to see six films before voting. I was sure I would have seen all the nominees by now, but you fooled me again… (The only motion picture category in which I have seen all the nominees is “Best Performance by a Cast” and I’m not even sure yet whether I’m going for Milk or Button.)

    83. Free December 18th, 2008 at 9:44 am 83

      For the people inquiring about Sally Hawkins, I’m not sure if she’ll be nominated. However, I do think she has a better chance at getting nominated over Kate Winslet for RR. That film is dying quickly. I think the Adapted Screenplay is safe, mostly because it’s a weak year for adapted works. But DiCaprio is on the edge, and it looks like Michael Shannon and Kathy Bates aren’t going to make it either.

      I think Actress will look like this:
      HATHAWAY
      JOLIE
      LEO
      STREEP
      THOMAS

    84. Paul Outlaw December 18th, 2008 at 9:48 am 84

      Hawkin’s profile was definitely raised once she won the big crit double whammy, but it didn’t happen soon enough to impact SAG voters that much, who I imagine had already voted by that point.

      A lot of SAG Nom. Comm. members wait til the last minute to vote, as screenings and screeners are coming in down to the wire. Sally Hawkins has been actively campaigning for a while, attending screenings with Q&As and so forth. So she was definitely on the radar as much as if not more than Melissa Leo.

    85. Jason December 18th, 2008 at 9:54 am 85

      cca-

      If Revolutionary Road wins Best Picture at the Globes, then there’s a good shot it gets that #5 spot. Otherwise I think it’s dead in the water. It’s a really schizophrenic award contender.

      I can’t imagine Dark Knight getting Best Director, Supporting Actor, at least five technical awards (Cinematography, Film Editing, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing) and the film getting snubbed for Best Picture. If TDK gets snubbed, then Nolan is getting snubbed as well. Which looks like it may happen. All the TDK has going for it is Heath Ledger and the $530 million box office.

    86. Rob December 18th, 2008 at 9:56 am 86

      Winslet is SOOOOOOOOOOOO winning one of these. Either way, she’ll be a seven time nominee at the oscars which is just Dandy.

      Can anyone beat Doubt for Ensemble ?

      ANGELINA IS ALREADY SURE LOCK FOR THE OSCAR, SHE GET NOMINATIONS IN EVERYTHING, SHE WON THE SATELLITE AWARD(IN THE LAST 10 YEARS, ALL THE ACTRESS WINNERS IN DRAMA, HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE OSCAR OR AT LEAST GETS THE OSCAR NOMINATION) AND SHE WAS SNUBBED LAST YEAR FOR “A MIGHTY HEART” ACADEMY USED TO MAKE A COMPENSATION FOR THAT AND THE BIG REASON, ACADEMY NEEDS DESPERATELY RATING , THEY JUST GOING TO BRING ANGELINA, I KNOW, STOP TO BEING HATERS PEOPLE

    88. Kitty December 18th, 2008 at 9:58 am 88

      Please stop with the caps already.

      I don’t really understand why people are so shocked by the omission of The Dark Knight – I mean, sure, I wanted to see it there as much as anyone – and I must say, that I am one of the few people who don’t consider this a “best picture” award – it is not….

      The reason I am disappointed, but not shocked is because when I think of TDK – I think of Heath Ledger, Christopher Nolan or Christian Bale…rarely do I think about it and think about Maggie G or Gary Oldman or even Michael Caine (who was really fantastic)….the towering force of Heath Ledger’s performance, not to mention his death is what everyone thinks about….could be what happened here, I don’t know….but that is why I am not shocked to see it missing from that list….

      What does shock me is the fact that Revolutionary Road which has a great ensemble of performers such as Michael Shannon and Kathy Bates, the great Jay O Sanders, etc, have been omitted from that list….that is a true ensemble piece, moreso, I feel than slumdog….etc…

      my two cents (I’m canadian, so it’s not worth as much)

    90. RichardA December 18th, 2008 at 10:03 am 90

      Richard Jenkins for the win!

      The Jolie/Pitt nods…hmmm. Golden Globes territory?

    91. Sean Knight December 18th, 2008 at 10:05 am 91

      I think it’s time to acknowledge that The Dark Knight wont get a best picture nomination, even if it is leagues ahead of most of the competition. Everyone is playing it safe this year. What we need to start asking is will WALL-E be taken seriously and put into the fifth spot? It’s beginning to look like it just might. I’m still predicting Christopher Nolan for Best Director for the Dark Knight though

    92. Daren December 18th, 2008 at 10:05 am 92

    94. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 10:13 am 94

      @ Pierre: I know that I wasn´t the only one. Just wanted to provoke reactions. But nevertheless, I can hardly imagine a picture that was hyped as much as TDK on this site. maybe Brokeback Mountain, but I don´t know.
      I liked it too, but not enough to consider as one of the five best picture of this year, or any other year. But I agree, it´s a contender, made billions of money and has it´s supporters in the academy, for sure.
      But at this moment, I give the edge for the fifth spot to “Wall-E”.

    95. David December 18th, 2008 at 10:17 am 95

      I’m also happy about Elizabeth Moss! Definitely the best actress on Mad Men… much better than January Jones. Peggy Olson is a wonderful character.

      I’m still half and half on Sally Hawkins’ performance. It was so giddy and at points, annoying, but it seemed like that’s what the film called for… And the scene at the end seemed to redeem it all… she became a real person.
      But Eddie Marsan… Man… maybe the best performance I’ve seen all year… but with Josh Brolin in Milk and Heath Ledger, it seems like this is a really strong category, although Marsan will probably not be nominated. I’m just blabbering…. Go see Happy Go Lucky… It’s pretty wonderful.

      Stupid question, but why is there such a divide over Revolutionary Road. I barely know anyone who has seen it, so I’m not sure why the critics are leaving it out everywhere… is it supposed to be not very good… or doesn’t live up to the hype?

    96. Jason December 18th, 2008 at 10:22 am 96

      I’m as much of a TDK fan as anyone, but it’s on thin-ice. If it doesn’t get a PGA nod with the kind of money it made, and if Nolan doesn’t get a DGA nod with the hype he’s getting, then it has no shot at Best Picture. It keeps getting talked about as one of the contenders, and then when it misses out on nominations the talk goes to “Well, it wasn’t much of a (insert-award here) movie anyway”. Ultimately, maybe it’s not a Oscar movie.

    97. Sofia December 18th, 2008 at 10:25 am 97

      That injustice, with Sally Hawkins, who happened to SAG, I hope not more Snub for her and more prizes for her.

    98. Jason December 18th, 2008 at 10:27 am 98

      @David Re: Revolutionary Road

      You know how when your friends see a movie, or a TV show, and listen to an album that you haven’t seen or listened to yet, and they talk constantly about how good it is and how you should need to watch it because it’s so good. And every time you see them, the conversation inevitably drifts to “You really need to check that out!” Maybe at one point, you were interested in it, but then after hearing about it so much, you just unconsciously avoided it and secretly hated it even though you never saw it.

      I think that’s what happened with Revolutionary Road.

    99. Ryan December 18th, 2008 at 10:27 am 99

      Wow. Nice going for Slumdog Millionaire.

      And Kate! Yay.

    100. HUGO December 18th, 2008 at 10:33 am 100

      Angelina Jolie ??????
      THE PERFORMANCE OF HAWKINS AND SCOTT THOMAS, ARE HIGHER, BUT NOT UNDERSTAND SAG

    101. Robert December 18th, 2008 at 10:33 am 101

      @Paul Outlaw: My point is, though, that Sally Hawkins double win from LAFC and NYFC surely raises her profile for Best Actress in an “Attention Must Be Paid” kind of way, much more so than any number of her Q&As could do. So my question is whether her two big critical wins happened too late to have much impact/influence with SAG. I mean, if SAG nominations were announced today, the ballots must have been due a few days earlier, say Friday of last week or Monday of this week (I’m just guessing here). But Hawkins two big critical wins happened last week, leaving at the most 2-3 days leeway between the NYFC announcement and the due date for the SAG nominations. It just doesn’t seem like enough time to have an impact with SAG voters, whereas there’s plenty of time to have an impact with Oscar voters.

    102. Dorothy Porker December 18th, 2008 at 10:35 am 102

      Thrilled for:

      Winslet
      Jolie
      Penn
      Brolin
      Cruz
      Ledger
      Streep

      Sad for:

      Leo snub
      Hawkins snub

    103. Ryan Adams December 18th, 2008 at 10:38 am 103

      Not sure why the SAG website and pres release have The Dark Knight listed in the multiple nominee list with 2. Am I missing something? I want to believe in Harvey Dent, but…

    104. Rose December 18th, 2008 at 10:40 am 104

      Disappointed not to nominate Sally Hawkins and Marissa Tomei, Oscar hope are fair and assess the performance and not other things.

    105. Paul Outlaw December 18th, 2008 at 10:40 am 105

      @David and Jason Re: Revolutionary Road

      The fact is, it isn’t opening til the day after Christmas, so audiences haven’t had the chance to have any reaction to it all. As far as critics and industry people go, it’s getting a lot of raves and respect. However, there are a lot of people (like me) who did not love it. Enough of those people and you don’t take home prizes. Pretty straightforward.

    106. Dominik December 18th, 2008 at 10:41 am 106

      @ Ryan: One TDK-nominee is for “Outstanding achievement in Most Showdowns”.

    107. mileshigh December 18th, 2008 at 10:41 am 107

      As a “Dark Knight” supporter, I think it’s Best Picture asperations are fading. Getting a SAG ensemble doesn’t necessarily lock you for a Best Picture Oscar nod, but its certainly a good sign. I can’t see “Doubt” getting a BP nod, but I can easily see ‘WALL-E’ getting the 5th spot with the technical achievement and ocean deep themes alone.

      Unless Hollywood as a whole feels differently, it looking grim for the Dark Knight. The last few months I was excited thinking about a Batman movie being nominated for Best Picture. After watching it again, its two biggest strengths are Heath Ledger and Director Christopher Nolan. I would only support TDK because its a Batman movie, not because it was the best film of the year.

      Predicted Best Picture race: ‘Slumdog’ vs. ‘Milk’ or ‘Buttons’ (the other the dark horse candidate)

    108. Eduardo Gigante December 18th, 2008 at 10:42 am 108

      A cast nod for Slumdog?! That was the biggest surprise. For now I think it is the only lock for best Picture, along with Milk (Benjamin Button may ride the Kudo wave, but I’m not sure yet).

      In a weird way, I think TDK’s shun actually helped Heath’s chances, given that he is the only nominee for it. SAG loves to treat its award as a life achievment (see Jerry Orbach, for example), and he may also fit into a Johnny Depp scenario (whose win always felt more like a special award to me). TDK will also bag the stunt award, too.

      But don’t cross off TDK until the DGA’s…

    109. RichardA December 18th, 2008 at 10:43 am 109

      Ryan…it’s the stunt award for TDK.

      What I am stunned about is TDK’s snub in the ensemble cast. I don’t like the movie as much as others in AD, but I wholeheatedly liked a lot of the performances in the movie (which I did not like). But really, this is one of coffin nails for TDK in the BP race. Oh well. Let’s see the DGA.

    110. Bill M. December 18th, 2008 at 10:45 am 110

      Not that many complaints at all. Glad Brolin was in there, disappointed slightly about Kristin Scott Thomas & Cate Blanchett. Thrilled about Melissa Leo.

      Slumdog, Milk, & Curious Case are unquestionable locks for Best Picture. Obviously they will also get PGA, WGA, & DGA nom’s.

      I see The Dark Knight doing very well with the PGA & DGA. With a good chance at the WGA for nom’s. Last two spots open for four films: Doubt, Frost/Nixon, Rev. Road, & The Dark Knight. VERY interesting.

    111. Ryan Adams December 18th, 2008 at 10:45 am 111

      ha, Dominik, you joker.
      You jest but you’re not far off.
      The second nomination is for Best Stunt Ensemble, which doesn’t get grouped with the AC-TORS!:

      Stunt Ensemble
      “The Dark Knight”
      “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”
      “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”
      “Iron Man”
      “Wanted”

    112. N8 December 18th, 2008 at 10:52 am 112

      I think I was one of the only commenters who actually made predictions for that category last night, and I still only went 3 for 5. X(

    113. GFH December 18th, 2008 at 10:55 am 113

      From these nominations, and taking into account all other prelims, I find it safe to assume 2 things about the actress race:

      1. We can now rule out Hawkins’ chance for an Oscar win. Even though she has a slight advantage in critics prizes, she failed to get BFCA and SAG mentions, and that stings hard. I still think she’ll definitely get the nomination (Melissa Leo most likely to be shut out in this case), but the win is highly unlikely.

      2. Kristin Scott Thomas being Oscar-nominated at this point will surprise me almost as much as Laura Linney did last year. Like Hawkins, she hasn’t showed up in major Best Actress lineups. Hawkins however has the advantage of having critical love, while Thomas, surprisingly, hasn’t won anything whatsoever until now.

    114. Pierre de Plume December 18th, 2008 at 11:00 am 114

      Dominik — I’m skeptical about WALL-E getting a best pic nomination.

      And jorge — I don’t hate Sally Hawkins. I don’t think I even mentioned her.

    115. iggy December 18th, 2008 at 11:06 am 115

      I know nothing, definitely. So, Slumdog and The Reader are then lead-less movies? I haven’t seen neither of them, but how is that possible? Just because in both cases the male roles are played by different guys? Anyway, I think I’ll suggest this lead-less thing to my boss…

      Also, I thought there would be some love for In Bruges and Burn After Reading in the ensemble category (if not supporting for Pitt). I find specially surprising the lack of love for Burn After Reading in general. Give me one BAR instead of ten Tropic Thunder or Mamma Mia any time.

      [off topic: I m totally pissed by the snub of The Happening in the "worst of the year" lists. Early releases really hurt everyone s chances ;`]

      PS. Sorry, my keyboard has decided to stop working in the middle of the comment.

    116. Ally December 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am 116

      What? No Best Actress nomination for the brilliant yet underrated Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy) and Best Supporting Female for Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)??

      And what about Kristin Scott Thomas and Sally Hawkins?!

      Let’s hope that the Oscar nominations don’t turn out to be such a disappointment. Two things I am glad of – Melissa Leo’s nomination for Frozen River and Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

    117. Hera December 18th, 2008 at 11:11 am 117

      I’m relieved to see TDK snubbed for ensemble it would have been a shame if it had been nominated at the expense of other worthy films.I’m also surprised that Slumdog got an ensemble nomination and that RR did not.

    118. Ryan Adams December 18th, 2008 at 11:17 am 118

      iggy, I wholeheartedly agree that Burn After Reading was a lot more fun to watch than Tropic Thunder. BAR has expanded nicely in my memory since I’ve seen it, while TT has leaked away leaving a grubby smudge.

      Bad news about your keyboard
      Mock M. Night Shyamalan at your own risk.
      Shall I taunt him by saying “I see d3@& pe666le^?

    119. Mark December 18th, 2008 at 11:17 am 119

      Shame on the actors for putting Patel and Hoffman into Best Supporting Actor when both are clearly leads. Why this continued category fraud year after year?

    120. Brian December 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am 120

      By snubbing The Dark Knight the Hollywood elitist are once again giving a big middle finger to the average american audience.

    121. Robert December 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am 121

      @GFH: While I wouldn’t say we can “rule out” Hawkins chances of winning Best Actress, given the unsteady nature of this race this year, I agree with you that her chances seem long at this point to win the Oscar. Right now she’s just competing for a nomination. I’m still predicting (for now) that she will get nominated, but I have to agree that a win looks cloudy at best.

      Damn, though, I’m loving the bloodbath that is this year’s Best Actress race. I have to think that Cate Blanchett’s chances of getting nominated are bleak, at this point. SAG was not exactly shy about rewarding Benjamin Button, yet no Blanchett. That may be telling. It seems like she would have shown up here if she’s going to show up at all.

      Streep, Hathaway, and Kate Winslet for RR seem likely, at this point. I suspect the other two slots are between Leo, Hawkins, and Jolie, with an outside chance for KST to slip in. In short, I’m not saying anything that different from anyone else…

    122. Ryan Hoffman December 18th, 2008 at 11:23 am 122

      Man one award snub and the Caped Crusader is dead?
      You really need to read more things if you think that.
      And to someone who says what does it have going for it other than Heath and the billions?
      In your own post you said cinematography, editing, sound, effects, and most importantly, the direction. It has all of that going for it. It will have huge tech support, bigger than Wall-E’s.
      I agree if it doesn’t get PGA and DGA support, its dead, but the odds of that happening isn’t likely, so I think its safe to say its safely in the top 5 as of right now.

    123. Annan December 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am 123

      Unforgivable that there’s no Shield anywhere on the TV side.

      Nice to see Slumdog getting some love, I figured SAG would be it’s weakest group.

    124. long time listener December 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am 124

      A lot of things about the SAGs surprised me today, including the love for Doubt and Slumdog.

      A best ensemble nod would’ve definitely helped TDK, but it’s not dead yet. The DGA and PGA are going to be the real indicators. The success of TDK saved some industry jobs this year. I have to think that a lot of Academy members are going to want to recognize that, and I think it’s going to get some #1 slot votes. Let’s not forget last year’s ratings disaster.

      What I want to know is, who in the world is putting Frost/Nixon at the #1 or #2 or even #3 slot this year? I’m flabbergasted that it’s gotten this far. Every year there’s a solid, but boring film that inexplicably earns a BP nom, at the expense of more interesting films. I feel the same about Milk – it’s a fine biopic, but I prefer Van Sant when he’s taking chances.

      Is it me, or is this year filling up with particularly boring “locks”?

    125. Alex December 18th, 2008 at 11:29 am 125

      No Kristin Scott Thomas, Sally Hawkins, or Michelle Williams…but, Angelina Jolie gets nominated? What a bunch of CRAP!

    126. Jason December 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am 126

      Ryan-

      I didn’t say it was dead, but it is on thin ice. It’s not just one snub. Only Ledger got nominated for the Golden Globes, and WALL-E is getting the populist love among the Film Critics Awards.

      Slumdog, Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, and Milk look like locks. It looks like it’s gonna be the robot vs. the bat for #5 and right now WALL-E is gaining momentum and TDK is losing momentum.

    127. Robert December 18th, 2008 at 11:40 am 127

      I agree with everyone who is saying not to rule out “The Dark Knight” yet. The lack of SAG ensemble doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me. If TDK gets left off the DGA list, then it’s time to worry.

      But for now, TDK may be following The Sixth Sense’s trajectory to an Oscar nomination. Big money maker. Big buzz movie. Lauded supporting performance. No Globe BP nod, no SAG ensemble nod, but it scored much better with the guilds–DGA, editing etc–and found its way on the list.

      Besides, SOMETHING has to replace Doubt on the list. I am more convinced than I probably should be that Doubt won’t be a BP nominee. And despite all evidence to the contrary, I still question whether Frost/Nixon is a lock.

    128. Laura December 18th, 2008 at 11:42 am 128

      Very happy that Winslet got TWO deserving nominations. Here’s hoping that her two nominations don’t cancel each other out, and that she finally WINS.

      Happy for Slumdog and Dev Patel!! But I’m sad for Leo’s omission. Looks like Revolutionary Road is going to be almost completely shut out. I think it’s because people just aren’t interesting in watching it, because it looks too depressing.

      I think the Best Ensemble nominees are mostly going to reflect the Oscar Best Pic nominees. Slumdog, Milk, Button, and (sadly) Frost/Nixon are locks. Don’t think Doubt will get a nod. Here’s hoping The Dark Knight or Wall-E slips into the fifth slot!

    129. Mad Professah December 18th, 2008 at 11:42 am 129

      LOVE THE nominations for RICHARD JENKINS (although I hope that means THE VISITOR gets some SCREENPLAY LOVE) as well. I wish HAAZ SLEIMAN had gotten nominated for SUPPORTING in that film.

      What’s up with CATE missing a nomination for BENJAMIN BUTTON?

      KUDOS to KATE WINSLET for the double nominations, but isn’t that a bad sign if she gets both at the Oscars? Has anyone won one when nominated twice (Weaver, Blanchett, Moore)? They all went home without a win.

      Interesting GRAN TORINO got no love–I think that Oscar will be kinder to CLINT.

      Definitely not feeling the love for DOWNEY in TROPIC THUNDER. I would have given Best Supporting to TOM CRUISE.

    130. AJ December 18th, 2008 at 11:43 am 130

      Sally Hawkins this Sally Hawkins that. The Academy has one major major difference from the SAG- British people. See: Atonement’s BP nomination. Dev Patel? British. The Dark Knight? British star and director. Never, ever forget about the British.

    131. Sam Juliano December 18th, 2008 at 11:59 am 131

      Not bad at all.

      I am particularly thrilled at the Richard Jenkins nod, which I feel was fully deserving.

    132. Free December 18th, 2008 at 12:01 pm 132

      “Shame on the actors for putting Patel and Hoffman into Best Supporting Actor when both are clearly leads. Why this continued category fraud year after year?”

      -Because it helps their nomination chances.

    133. Zach December 18th, 2008 at 12:14 pm 133

      So since we don’t expect Oscars to match SAGs one-for-one, who will be bumped? I suspect…

      Best Actor
      Clint (or Leo) over Brad … but can Clint do it without GG or SAG? Clint being Clint, a la Million Dollar Baby…

      Best Actress
      Sally vs. Angelina (vs. Kate (vs. Kristin & Cate)) for the last slot … I suspect Sally considering her critics’ support, but the lack of BFCA and SAG is telling. I could easily see Angelina out again just like last year, in a love-it-or-hate-it perf and film, but the support is all there, and they would love to invite Brangelina, no? So is it really potential double nominee Winslet who should be shaking in her boots for a film no one seems impressed with?

      Best Supporting Actor
      The last slot is very open. I suspect Michael Shannon just based on word-of-mouth, but that would require some push for RR — though I suspect it would be easier to nominate him than Leo, just because he’s a scene-stealer.

      Dev Patel is surprising, but I doubt it will happen at the Oscars. He just doesn’t strike me as Saoirse Ronan-like enough…and it’s harder for male child stars, I would say (see Freddie Highmore, also SAG-nominated. Frankly, the SAG loves kids — they also nominated Dakota Fanning in I Am Sam, who *was* ripped off for an Oscar nod).

      Fiennes could get in, but he will probably cancel himself out and is just too subtle. Franco had a great year, but I would have expected more from the youth-friendly SAGs. Eddie Marsan has gotten no love, and I would expect Shannon over him. A toss-up in a weak field?

      When Entertainment Weekly did their story at the end of November on the top 8 Oscar contenders, they mentioned how many movies with four or more acting nominations have not been nominated for Best Picture — unfortunately, I do not have the issue with me now, nor is it online, but I believe it was something like 5 out of 39. So, what do we think will happen?

      -Following precedent, Doubt will take the open 5th slot at the Oscars.
      -GG and SAG nominee Adams just won’t be nominated (GG and BFCA nominee Tomei, as well as someone from Rachel Getting Married or even Kathy Bates are waiting in the wings).
      -Who cares about precedent?

      Also, randomly,
      -Brangelina both have all 3 major nominations — BFCA, SAG, GG
      -Jenkins = BFCA and SAG
      -Eastwood = just BFCA
      -Melissa Leo = BFCA, SAG
      -Winslet (for RR) = SAG, GG
      -Hawkins = just GG (where she is likely to win for comedy, though)
      -DiCaprio = just GG
      -Shannon, Dewitt, Thomas = none!

    134. Chris December 18th, 2008 at 12:15 pm 134

      I am bummed about The Dark Knight not making it in the ensemble list. I think it’s still got a chance at the Oscars.

    135. Zach December 18th, 2008 at 12:22 pm 135

      From http://oscar-watch.ew.com/2008/12/are-doubt-and-r.html:

      UPDATE: The very savvy Cynthia Swartz, executive at 42West and orchestrator of Doubt and Revolutionary Road’s Academy campaigns, sent me the following response: “Here is another piece of history that totally rebuts your history. In the past 50 years, 60 films have received at least 3 acting nominations. 52 of them were nominated for Best Picture. Of the 8 that were not, only 4 also had a screenplay nomination. And since there are no actors in the NBR, the BFCA or on the AFI board, I will go with my history.”

      —-

      Yeah, well, you can try to forget about that RR nomination, and I *DOUBT* RR will get more than 2 acting nominations.

    136. tmoves December 18th, 2008 at 12:24 pm 136

      I still think Revolutionary Road will make it to the golden guy. As much as the masses may want to see Brangelina at their show, I think the Titanic reunion possibility may be a stronger force. Is it just me or does anyone else see a 90s revival? Leo & Kate finally get to see what it’s like to “live happily ever after.” Kristin Scott Thomas finally “gets out of the cave.” Batman ditches the codpiece and actually grows a pair. Sam Mendes goes back to the “thea-tah” albeit he’s still in suburbia. Danny Boyle sees a brighter future. Damn, everyone’s getting older. Well, everyone except Brad Pitt. Wouldn’t you know it…

      Seriously though, I wouldn’t rule out Revolutionary Road’s magnetism just yet. It won’t be anywhere near Titanic’s box-office, but if they put that film in theatres, it will have some pull. Most of those high school girls (arguably Titanic’s largest, if not most faithful, demographic) are probably married with children now and just may have seen a glimpse of themselves or their future selves in that trailer. Sasha may be right — perhaps the climate has changed a bit. Perhaps some of last year’s dark cloud has blown east and November’s sun shone a bit on these choices. But I say we’re still in transition. Some of the gloom still lingers. Poor Sally Hawkins, beware.

      I wouldn’t underestimate Revolutionary Road’s star power just yet. There’s an evolution there that people are going to want to witness. We’ll see what the Globes have to say. As far as SAG goes, well, maybe our SAG comm friend on here made a valid point — Michael Shannon was listed as lead. That could’ve hurt both his and Leo’s shot at a slot. Tinseltown may have something different to say. Tinseltown nominates Oscars not SAG. Actors nominate SAG. And we all know that not all actors are up there in Tinseltown. I’m thinking Leo has a few friends in Tinseltown.

      As much as I’m ready for some holiday Benjamin Button magic, a bye-bye 2008 Revolutionary Road binger sounds like the perfect post-holiday chaser. Non?

    137. Seankgallagher December 18th, 2008 at 12:25 pm 137

      Very happy for Jenkins and Rourke. Not happy at all that Scott-Thomas (who gave two of the year’s best performances, not just in I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG, but also TELL NO ONE) and Tomei (whose work in THE WRESTLER is every bit as good as Rourke’s) were snubbed. Hawkins I also am sad about, but I understand for many people, I’m just beating up against a brick wall there.

      TDK is a much better ensemble than Slumdog Millionaire. I do think Slumdog is a certainty come BP nominations, but as a cast performance, TDK is way off the charts. This SAG list is a bit crippled.

    140. Allie December 18th, 2008 at 12:47 pm 140

      I can’t believe that Jimmy Wolk did not get a SAG nomination for outstanding performance by a male actor in a made for television movie or miniseries for “Front of the Class”. He was excellent in that movie, and I heard that it was his first big project, too! I’m disappointed that “Front of the Class” didn’t get any nominations. I’m really glad that Kate Winslet got nominated for “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader”!! I can’t wait to see both movies!

      Also, not surprised that “30 Rock” got nominated for many awards. I like that show a lot, but I hope that “The Office” wins an award, too. I’m also glad that “House” got some nominations. “House” didn’t do too well at the emmys, so I’m not going to get my hopes up, but maybe they’ll win a SAG award or two! They only won one emmy, but deserved more because season 4 of “House” was excellent! I think it’s going to be an interesting awards show! It’s hard to say who will take home the most awards.

    141. SaltireFlower December 18th, 2008 at 12:51 pm 141

      Taraji, Dev, and the cast of Milk are nominated which makes me happy. But sigh…no love for Leo or the cast of TDK.

      “Shame on the actors for putting Patel and Hoffman into Best Supporting Actor when both are clearly leads. Why this continued category fraud year after year?”

      The categories for nominations are selected by the studios not by SAG.

      The reverse is true for AMPAS. Academy nominee categories are solely the province of the voting member.

      I think these nominees are a pretty damn close match for the Oscars. I have no real quarrel with them.

      I’m surprised that Synecdoche, NY didn’t get a nod for cast. That’s a shame–everyone was great.

    146. kezza December 18th, 2008 at 1:08 pm 146

      Very disappointed at the ho-hum TV nominations. I would have thought that True Blood would have got numerous nominations – and Monk that is so predictable and boring … AGAIN. and the Closer and Kyra and etc it is all so zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Don’t they watch any new shows. I’m just pissed about True Blood that and Dexter are both equally amazing – thank goodness that Dexter was nominated but I suppose that boring old show House will win both actor and series – House is one of the most formulatic shows I have ever seen. BORING!!!

      Leo what do you have to do – I suppose the male actors have more competition or something – I don’t know but that man deserves to have a nomination. Are they saying that he isn’t as good as Kate in RR as I have heard he is beyond brilliant?

      Well that is my opinion.

      How can anyone be surprised at 30 Rock’s success?

      If it’s true that Shannon was listed for lead with Leo — WTF? That now takes the cake for stupid category mismatches (at least Jennifer Connelly’s and Meryl Streep’s performances in years past were more convincingly lead).

    152. JoeyG December 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm 152

      erm, just wondering why there is still no Dev Patel in the right-hand tracker?

      surely after all the breakthrough performance awards, and now a SAG nomination, he must be surely rank higher then Brad Pitt and John Malkovich for Burn After Reading??

      not that it will make much of a difference, that Oscar belongs to Heath already……………..

      Anybody know where I can watch the nominations I missed them this morning?

    155. A 2009 SAG nom comm member December 18th, 2008 at 2:23 pm 155

      Michael Shannon was listed as eligible for best supporting, Michael SHEEN was listed as eligible for Best Actor.

      FYI: to be considered a nominee for the SAG awards, the actor has to grant permission and they also have control over which category they are listed as (SAG allows actors to submit themselves with out the requirement of a studio backing the nominee).

      According to the rules an actor can not end up winning a nomination in the same category for more than one performance. For example, if Kate Winslet had the most votes for nominations for Best Actress in both Rev Road and the Reader she would have only qualified for one. By doing a different category the actor has the chance to score in two categories.

      Not all decide to split categories… according to the eligibility booklet, the actors with two possible lead actor performances were DeNiro, DiCaprio, Daniel Craig, Aaron Eckhart, Dennis Quaid, Sam Rockwell.

      For the Best Actress were Kate Beckinsale, Abigail Breslin, Angelina Jolie, Frances McDormand, and Meryl Streep.

      For Best Supporting there are too many to mention.. interestingly, there were more eligible performers in this category than any other (112!)

      Also of note: there were only 8 possible contenders for nominations for stunt ensemble

    156. Mark F. December 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pm 156

      Thanks for clarifying the SAG rules. I should point out that the actor’s branch of AMPAS is gulty of category fraud from time to time as well. Anyway, Dev Patel is not supporting–that’s pretty ridiculous. Again, shame on the actors for putting him there — even if he agreed to it.

      Anyone else notice that Kiefer Sutherland got nominated for phoning in Jack Bauer for about 90 minutes? Yaaaaaawn.

      At this point, Revolutionary Road has one chance, and it’s not as slim as you might think: the box office. If the film’s anything close to a runaway hit, suddenly all its potential nominations are back in the mix.

    160. Scott December 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm 160

      I think Dark Knight will be fine. It’s not an acting showpiece. It’s a director’s movie. If it doesn’t get the DGA then maybe fans should be worried, but I’m reasonably confident DGA will honor it. It will get in w/ Slumdog, Milk, Bennie and probably Frost/Nixon.

      “SO angry. I wonder what’ll happen with Sally now? She’s won virtually ever critics prize, but no BFCA and no SAG nom… hopefully she’ll get in – she’s probably a lock to win the Globe.”

      Don’t bother worrying. Hawkins WILL be nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress as there has been no one ever in a lead category that has won the NYFC and the LAFC without being nominated. Incidentially, Hawkins will probably pick up the NSOFC in January as well, so that will be 3 of the 4 big ones. Again: She’ll be in. And for all of you guessing director nods, do not be surprised when Mike Leigh is there again as well, so all of those who think that they’re so happy that Hawkins is not on the SAG short list, your rejoicing is probably premature.

    163. AJ December 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm 163

      Who in the casts is nominated? Doubt is probably just the four. Frost/Nixon, is it just Sheen and Langella? Benjamin Button- Blanchett, Pitt, Henson, Swinton, and who else? Slumdog Millionaire is what I really want to know, is it all three Latikas all three Jamals and all three Salims? What about the host and the police commissioner? I want to know!!!!

    164. Stephen Holt December 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm 164

      “Sally Hawkins this Sally Hawkins that. The Academy has one major major difference from the SAG- British people. See: Atonement’s BP nomination. Dev Patel? British. The Dark Knight? British star and director. Never, ever forget about the British.”

      I’m quoting AJ here. And I partially agree with him. I liked Rev Road better than Button, which I was quite disappointed by after all the hype.

      The first half of BB works better than the second half, IMHO. Which is where Cate Blanchett takes over and the very unusual story becomes, er, cliche BY A MILE as a very conventional love stoy is what takes over the film, and becomes boring in the extreme I felt, til AH! the last several series of time twists….

      All those special effects to me do not a performance make up and I’m really SHOCKED at Brad Pitt’s nomination here.

      Problem with BB is Brad can’t carry it. Cate’s doing all the heavy lifting in Part Two, and it’s too much…

      “Slumdog” is, I guess, the Obama movie, that, unlikely as it is, could make it all the way.

      But I don’t think Dev Patel who was so-so really in the “lead” is gonna make it.

      “Rev Road” I think is really more the Academy’s Academy’s cup of tea.
      And Leo’s being left out…Shocking…

      I don’t think Melissa Leo is gonna make it all the way but the other BA gals who are nominated here, will. They being Superstars Angelina, Anne H. Meryl and Kate W. then one other Superstar. Quite possibly Cate Blanchett, whom they LOVE!!! She got TWO nominations last year- and won neither. Kate W. beware!

      It certainly looks like Kate W. is gonna score twice in the nominations, but will the Acad. think THAT is the honor, the double nomination and award somebody else. Meryl? Anne Hathaway?

      I also don’t think Robert DJ is gonna make it for a comedic blackface performance in a *gasp*horrors* an un PC COMEDY! Ditto Dev Patel.

      Rosemarie DeWitt is going down in flames all over the place. Sadly. She’s not well known enough at this point. However, they LOVE Marisa Tomei. And she could replace…Amy Adams…? But I do think Taraji and Viola and Penelope are in.

      I personally HATED TDK and would not vote for it in any category except for Heath…Will the Academy think like me? Or like the fanboys?

      They are more apt to nominate something “British” which may be Rev Road(British director, British Leading Actress) over TDK…

      They’ll give Heath the Supp. Actor award and there will be some tech nominations and that’ll be it…

      Sorry Benjamin didn’t turn my buttons.

    165. Paul Outlaw December 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm 165

      @ AJ:

      When I receive the ballot, I’ll let you know, but for Frost/Nixon it will consist of the two leads, plus Rockwell, Platt, MacFayden, Bacon and Hall at least. For Button it will be those you listed plus Harris, Flemyng, Koteas and Ali. Slumdog will be interesting because the SAG Awards people can’t do their usual annoying trick of listing only the recognizable stars. They are certain to name all the principal adult actors and probably the six juveniles.

      As a Brit, I have to admit that it’s about time Award ceremonies made room for underrated newcomers or just underrated performances in general.
      I sincerely hope that Kate Winslet (excellent actress that she is) does not take away an Academy Award nomination from Melissa Leo/Michelle Williams. If anyone needs to be dropped from that category it should be Streep/Jolie. I also seriously hope that Marisa Tomei gets Best Suppt. Actress and KW does not ruin anyone’s chances.
      It is obvious that Anne Hathaway will most likely walk away with Best Actress.

      There have been several cases in the past when an actress has been nominated for both lead and supporting and has won in one of the categories. In fact, it used to be an “unwritten rule” that if you were nominated in both during the same year, you won the supporting role. But once Sigourney Weaver broke that “rule” when she was doubly nominated for Gorillas in the Mist (lead) and Working Girl (supporting)…

      Anyway, past examples. Fay Bainter, 1938 (won supporting). Teresa Wright, 1942 (won supporting). Jessica Lange, 1982 (won supporting). Holly Hunter, 1993 (won lead). Those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

      I disagree with one thing Stephen Holt said in his above post. I don’t think all five of the Best Actress nominees will be the “Superstar” slate of Meryl, Anne H, Angelina, Kate, and Cate. I’m willing to bet money that at least one of the Superstars, maybe two, will be left off the final list in favor of one (two?) of the actresses in the small “arty” films: Melissa Leo, Sally Hawkins, and KST. And I also think we only have slot reserved for a K/Cate.

      My money’s on Kate, not Cate.

    173. Jason Park December 18th, 2008 at 5:39 pm 173

      I don’t understand how The Dark Knight doesn’t get nominated for Best Ensemble? Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhal, Aaron Eckhardt… I mean this is a loaded cast that all performed excellently in the biggest movie of the year. It’s unfortunate. I mean, Slumdog was great and all, but it didn’t deserve a Best Ensemble.

    174. Gentle Benj December 18th, 2008 at 5:44 pm 174

      Impressions:

      - Whoo hoo! I got all five right in Supporting Actor! Overall, 80%. Meh.

      - Omissions here who have a good chance of appearing at the Oscars: Clint Eastwood, Sally Hawkins, and Marisa Tomei.

      - Nominees here who are most vulnerable at the Oscars: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Amy Adams.

      - The Supporting Actor lineup is likely to be identical at the Oscars.

      - Nominations for both Patel and the cast of Slumdog tell us that this movie is going the distance. It’s the one to beat. What sets it apart from previous “fun” nominees like Little Miss Sunshine is the respect commanded by its director.

      - If Frost/Nixon gets a PGA nod, it’s locked in for a BP nod at the Oscars. Its inclusion here is significant.

      - Biggest boosts: Richard Jenkins, Kate Winslet, Dev Patel.

      - Biggest hit: Kristin Scott Thomas (but she ain’t out of it yet)

      Sally Hawkins gives the best performance of the year, by far. She won LAFCA and NYFCC (plus a truckload of other critics awards), and she’s a lock to win the Globe in her category. American critics RAVED about her – she’s a lock, along with Hathaway (who also has some critics awards and BFCA, Globe and SAG noms) and Streep (who is, well, Streep and is being nominated by all the major groups, despite her iffy reviews). The final spot will be between:

      Leo – Probably the biggest chance here, with her unexpected precursor turnout.

      Scott Thomas – She had massive buzz going into the race, with many thinking she would win. Precursor love failed to materialize, but the Globe nom makes her a better prospect than either Laura Linney or Tommy Lee Jones were last year (they were operating solely on Golden Satellite noms – Linney didn’t even get nominated by the Indie Spirits. They had strong buzz to begin with and Oscar voters remembered them).

      Jolie – Ratings and goodwill for her ‘A Mighty Heart’ snub. If she gets in over Leo, Scott Thomas or even Hawkins (weakest of the ‘locks’ despite having more awards than anyone else in this category) it will be a crime. She gave a rubbish performance…

      DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE ANGELINA JOLIE!!!!

      These were the words from deep inside Academy screenings…And I think that’s right…

      So poor Kate W. has already been a foregone conclusion, I’m told, that she’ll get nominated for both films, and lose twice…

      Leaving OTT Sister Meryl…no, not this year, and not for that performance…

      Anne H. too young, too cute, too new…Although wait a minute. Isn’t that the gal who always wins?

      And that leaves Angelina.

      The academy doesn’t care about Dev Patel…but they sure do revere Angelina…and it’s a way of awarding Clint…

      Melissa Leo has worked with nearly everyone in Show Business and they all love her…but she’s fighting with two foreigners Sally H, and KST for that last slot…AND Cate Blanchett, too…

      I’m revising my Robert Downey Jr ney. It’s now a yes, I hear…

      Poor Kate W….Too much good work in one year….You wouldn’t think that that kind of awesome talent could work against you…

      Angelina is not to be taken lightly. And she WILL be being nominated.

      And Sean’s still the one to beat for Best Actor. Cruz and Ledger still round out the winners circle…Or so I hear..

      Oh, and don’t shoot the messenger if Angie wins! But you heard it here first. NOT my fave, BTW. Personally, I’d vote for Annie if I was voting…but…I’m not…Just writing about people who are voting….

    187. Chris December 18th, 2008 at 11:30 pm 187

      Don’t read anything into The Dark Knight not getting a Best Ensemble Nomination. The Best Stunt Cast Ensemble was the perfect excuse for SAG to nominate something else (Slumdog perhaps). Nolan will get a DGA Nod, The movie will get a PGA Nod (and possibly a win there) and could get an Adapted Screenplay Nod (they did nominate Zodiac last year). Add all that plus the obvious fact that the movie is going to do extremely well in the technical nominations and you have an Oscar Nominee for Best Picture. On a different note, there have been three different screenings of Benjamin Button where I live over the last 2 weeks (I personally liked the film). I have heard from a lot of people who have seen it that they were underwhelmed. Everyone thinks it’s a lock. What happens if the movie flops or if the word from the people I have talked to isn’t just an abberation. Is it possible that it could bumped out by Doubt? As for Revolutionary Road. It is officially dead. Th British aren’t going to revive it like they did Atonement last year. Their movie of choice this year is going to be Slumdog.

      Lots of good picks, but I would have liked to see Rachel Getting Married for Ensemble Cast.

    191. Daniel S-R December 19th, 2008 at 12:32 am 191

      Ahem. Dissing Jolie in A Mighty Heart won’t keep them from dissing her this year. Newbies may laugh to hear this, but Cameron Diaz’s name got bandied about quite a bit for several years without ever finding its way to the ballot. They don’t really need to nominate Ange or Brad to get them to attend the show, so I don’t see that as a factor either.

      In weaker years, in Keira Knightley kinda years, Jolie would be assured the noblesse oblige spot, the Charlize Theron-North Country spot, a.k.a. hey you may not have won a lot of precursors, but we love you for de-glamming and telling a true story that people need to hear. But last year wasn’t, and this year ain’t, that weak.

      I think it’s funny to hear people talk about loving and hating her. I think Hollywood is more amazed by her than anything else…maybe no actor this talented has ever been the tabloids’ lead story every week for this long (ever since the tabs gave up on Lindsay and Paris, more or less). AMPAS voting for her is not so unlike voting for Barack Obama…you know it’s the complete package, you sorta have to get over your jealousy and wish there were more flaws and then grudgingly vote anyway.

      She could make it, but I’d bet on Winslet, Streep, Hathaway, Hawkins, and Blanchett.

    192. William December 19th, 2008 at 12:54 am 192

      What a boring year it’s turning out to be, and will be if TDK is snubbed. The SAGs look horribly boring already. Doubt looks like a total snooze fest, like any other film set in/around a church.

      Button has been getting fair/underwhelming reviews regularly. The fact that it’s still a lock is very sad for this years “front runners”.

      Sure, Slumdog is the favorite for the Oscars, but that doesn’t mean that you nominate it for Best Ensemble Cast at the SAGs over more deserving casts: TDK, Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married, etc. What great actors are in Slumdog? Zero! Patel isn’t even included in that answer. I hate when the Oscar front runner is inexplicably ass kissed by winning and being nominated for things that it doesn’t deserve.

      Please DGA and PGA help TDK’s Best Picture Nominee! I mean, Slumdog’s going to win anyway, so why not put TDK within the four runner ups? It’s more deserving to be there then Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Doubt, Wall*E, etc.

    193. Friedl December 19th, 2008 at 1:35 am 193

      Not too surprised to see Dev Patel in supporting.
      This is the group that nominated the girl from Whale Rider (you know, the one that the story was all about) as Supporting Actress, beyond all logic, to make way for Evan Rachel Wood in lead.

      It seems that if you are an unknown, a young actor, and foreign, you can’t really be a lead… cause how can a young foreigner lead anything?

      Interesting to note that Keisha Castel-Hughes didn’t have much (or any?) precursor attention in the main categories, got the SAG supp nom, and went on to be a lead actress nominee (and not do much since – probably a good thing for her development as a human being).
      But that was a VERY slow year for best actress, with Samantha Morton’s (phenomenal) arguably supporting performance in In America also sneaking a nod.

      Son’t think Dev’s pulling a surprise lead actor nod… but you never know… Nice thing about the Oscars is they’ve had some good surprises last couple of years.

      Uh-oh… no Michael Shannon? No Michael Sheen?
      That said, supp actor/actress is often the most divergent category between AMPAS / SAG.

      Come on – is anyone REALLY surprised that TDK didn’t get an Ensemble nod? Sadly, I’m not feeling the heat for TDK right now… let me keep my mouth shut and hope and see.

      THRILLED for Richard Jenkins – I knew that if anyone was gonna recognise him , it would be SAG (their brilliance in nominating the glorious Patricia Clarkson for the Station Agent is proof).
      But I don’t think this is indication that he is Oscar-bound, though – he has to beat off Leo, Clint & Brad…

      THRILLED for Melissa Leo – she’s got enough love now to be a near-lock? Great stuff!

      And to whomever said:

      “What makes you think Wall-e has a better shot than ‘The Dark Knight’? It wasn’t even nominated for any SAG awards.”

      Do you want to re-think that statement, perhaps?

      And to whomever said that Sally Hawkins was snubbed after sweeping the Critics Awards – um… I think she won 2. Anne Hathaway did a bit more of the sweeping, to my memory.

      But hey – I quite like this list. Supp categories a bit boring.

      I am strangely very glad for Angelina – genuinely glad.

      Canceled-out by my sadness for Cate Blanchett, tho…

    194. Ryan Adams December 19th, 2008 at 2:11 am 194

      Of all your shrewd observations, Friedl, it’s really wrong of me to latch on this:

      “THRILLED for Richard Jenkins… But I don’t think this is indication that he is Oscar-bound, though – he has to beat off Leo, Clint & Brad…”

      wow, the demands of Oscar campaigning get trickier and stickier every year.

      Sorry, I feel horrible now. Just horrible.

    195. Marty-O December 19th, 2008 at 2:30 am 195

      Maybe being awake for 20 hours is getting to me, but I laughed very much out loud at this:

      “This time last year, I woke up every morning wondering what I’d won or who had snubbed me during Ryan’s ride through the Best Supporting Actress awards.”

      ‘Cause now I’m imagining you watching Tilda get her Oscar and saying “Curses! It should have been *mine*!”

    196. James December 19th, 2008 at 2:43 am 196

      Oscar Race is getting really clear now.

      Best Picture:
      Forget Revolutionary Road and unfortunately maybe even DiCaprio but more on that later. Still looks like Frost/Nixon, Milk, Slumdog and Button. Add Wall-E and The Dark Knight still in the running. Doubt? I don’t think so. If anyone is going to be bumped. That’s the film.

      Best Actor:
      DiCaprio! What a shame. Pitt is good. But I think Eastwood will sneak in there at the end. The other four are locks…yes, I include Jenkins in that. Remember Tommy Lee Jones last year?

      Best Actress:
      Very surprised that Sally Hawkins didn’t get nominated but Melissa Leo is just as good (if not better). Blanchett is pretty much out of contention right? I still say that Kristen Scott Thomas comes out of nowhere and steals the Oscar nom from somebody (probably Angelina)

      Best Supporting Actor:
      Good group that will probably end up being the five in Oscar’s books. I like the Dev Patel nomination. He’s great in the film and it’s such a ensemble piece that I think him being a “supporting actor” actually makes sense. Nobody beats Ledger. Most unique performance of the year

      Best Supporting Actress:
      Again, this looks pretty much like the list for Oscar. Glad Button grabbed another one with Henson but sad about Rosemary Dewitt. Thought she had a chance there. Don’t really understand the Winslet nom in this category. It’s like they just want her to win! Hell, Streep won supporting first, whatever.

      OSCAR PREDICTS (WITHOUT DIRECTOR–WAITING FOR DGA’S AND PGA’S)

      Film: Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Slumdog, Milk & Wall-E
      Actor: Rourke, Eastwood, Langella, Jenkins & Penn
      Actress: Streep, Winslet, Hathaway, Hawkins & Scott Thomas
      S.Actor: Ledger, Downey Jr., Brolin, Patel & Hoffman
      S.Actress: Cruz, Winslet, Henson, Adams & Davis

    197. Guy Lodge December 19th, 2008 at 5:05 am 197

      “The academy doesn’t care about Dev Patel…but they sure do revere Angelina.”

      The Academy “reveres” Angelina Jolie? That’s news to me. That must be why she swept to victory on Oscar night back in February… oh, wait.

    198. TTitan December 19th, 2008 at 8:30 am 198

      ~~~“The academy doesn’t care about Dev Patel…but they sure do revere Angelina.”
      The Academy “reveres” Angelina Jolie? That’s news to me. That must be why she swept to victory on Oscar night back in February… oh, wait.~~~~
      …..oh wait…..did you see how dreadful the ratings for that show were…….oh wait……did you see she is the highest paid actress in America right now…..and oh wait….she did that having not WORKED in front of a camera for over a year, just doing (minimum)PR for her 3 now blockbockbuster movies, awaiting the birth of her twins……
      I really can’t understand the disrespect and snark that Angelina is getting from the Oscar pundit bloggers. All these attempts to “influence” the Oscr voting process is obvious and it isn’t working. She still gets nominations no matter how hard you try to dismiss her work. Her fellow ACTORS have voted for her peformances because they don’t buy into the bull$hit the media puts out about her. They look at the work and disregard the tabloid BS that they themselves are also subject to.
      Last year some savaged her A Mighty Heart performance. This year they say her performance in Changeling is not as good as AMH!! WTF!!! She can’t seem to win with this crowd, but do you really think she cares about what the fanboys/gals on sites like these site think?? It’s all about the work for her.
    199. Pumpkin December 19th, 2008 at 9:45 am 199
      The fact that DiCaprio, who critics say is giving the “performance of his career” in Revolutionary Road, is not nominated by SAG tells me that these awards are really not about the performance but about the campaigns (or lack thereof), “buzz,” politics and popularlity. Basically they’re saying that DiCaprio’s best performance to date is not nominated and that they nominated him for lesser performances (“Blood Diamond,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed”). And don’t tell me it’s because Best Actor is so crowed. Best Actor is ALWAYS crowed.
      Frankly, I’ve never thought SAG particularly loved DiCaprio, despite his two nominations in 2006. If he was so loved, he should have won for “The Departed” over Eddie Murphy (even if it was category confusion). It would have been their way of honoring his work that year. But he went home empty handed (with three nominiations).
    200. Daniel S-R December 19th, 2008 at 12:18 pm 200
      200! Whee!
      Ryan, you’re evil.
      The problem with nominating Kristin Scott Thomas is it’s a waste, because they’re not going to give the Best Actress Oscar to two French-speaking performances in a row.
      TTitan – calm down. Anyone who inspires this much paparazzi interest – Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly – can’t be reduced to “they love her” or “they hate her.” As I was trying to say, I think they’re relatively impressed with her relative grace, her ability to stay an untraditional icon (with tattoos, no wedding ring, and admissions of homosexual activity) – and of course her abiding acting talent and beauty. But does that mean votes? For a film no one saw, that got overshadowed by another Clint one (just as Iwo Jima overshadowed Fathers)? Probably not in a year this crowded.
    201. Paul Outlaw December 19th, 2008 at 12:25 pm 201
      Oh, Ryan , I just saw that –
      – and there almost went my keyboard…
      That was very wrong of you. ;-)
    202. Alex December 19th, 2008 at 1:29 pm 202
      RYAN, you are so hilarious.
      Another hilarious line from Friedl:
      “This is the group that nominated the girl from Whale Rider (you know, the one that the story was all about) as Supporting Actress”.
      And, no, there is no sick implication in this quotation. I just thought it was great deadpanning.
    203. Elva December 19th, 2008 at 4:46 pm 203
      I think SAG, eliminated the possibility of reaching the contest for the oscar to Sally Hawkins
    204. Nancy Kriparos December 19th, 2008 at 5:14 pm 204
      Where do I begin. Maybe I expected more from SAG but this a very boring and uninspired list of nominees. With the exception of Richard Jenkins, Melissa Leo and Dev Patel, the nominations are predictable and disappointing. Is Kate Winslet acting by herself in her 2 films? It appears so since she is the only one being recognized. And where would Frank Langella be without Michael Sheen to spar with?
      The Winslet and Patel for Best Supporting thing brings up something that is unsettling. If the performances are lead, than they should compete as lead regardless if they have other worthy performances during the year. This situation is totally unfair to anyone who truly is supporting because it denies them an opportunity to compete on a fair playing field. I think this adds another layer to an already unfair system. Afterall, do actors and actresses take roles because of the thrill and the challenge of the role …or to win awards?
      Someone has already mentioned this and I have noticed it too…with the exception of Slumdog…..the SAG film nominations seem to be anti-British eg. Wheres Scott Thomas, Sheen, Shannon, Fiennes, or In Bruges? The biggest shocker…..no cast nomination for The Dark Knight.
    205. Ryan Adams December 19th, 2008 at 5:26 pm 205
      “After all, do actors and actresses take roles because of the thrill and the challenge of the role …or to win awards?”
      I heard some of them will even do it for money.
      8-)
    206. Hugo December 19th, 2008 at 5:43 pm 206
      Out of the oscar sally Hawkins ???…
    207. Nancy Kriparos December 19th, 2008 at 5:45 pm 207
      “I heard some of them will even do it for money.”
      Ha ha Ryan….that true. But I doubt any of the award contenders or anyone in an art house film which award contenders tend to be, got paid a whole lot for their performances. The budgets are not that big.
      Tropic Thunder and The Dark Knight are probably the only films which
      have the mega pay day star salaries……but they are not the norm during awards season.
      I just realized I included Michael Shannon as a Brit up above….my mistake. I am pretty sure he’s American.
    208. Friedl December 22nd, 2008 at 10:45 am 208
      Here is my fearless forecast:
      Best Picture (Ensemble Cast): MILK
      Best Actor: Sean Penn- MILK
      Best Actress: Mery Streep-Doubt
      Best Supp. Actor: Heath Ledger-Dark Knight
      Best Supp. Actress: Kate Winslet- The Reader
      This is my bet for the Oscars as well! sure bet: Mery & Sean Penn
      MARISA TOMEI!!!! c’mon… she’s been overlooked so many times and sag should have known better that she delivered an outstanding job at par with rourke in the wrestler. i like amy adams & viola davis but not good enough. marisa better be nominated come oscar time!!! i def think she’s the dark horse to win again. oh, penelope cruz is overrated btw… wtf about marisa not nominated for the spirit? OMFG!!!
    211. Zoe C January 10th, 2009 at 3:55 pm 211
      Why was Bryan Cranston left out of the “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series?” His work in “Breaking Bad” (the best show this past season) was superb. Shameful. I don’t care about William Shatner being nominated, that show Boston Legal is sh*teous.
      “While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.
      So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.
      Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.
      So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
