It really is a story in itself this year. It is the most dramatic Best Picture race I have seen in ten years, no doubt about it. The opposing forces of The Hurt Locker versus Avatar may, in fact, become a broader statement about the future of filmmaking itself. That puts the Oscar in a pivotal position of being a force of history for the first time in many years, the way I see anyway. Reward Avatar and that breaks down walls of genre prejudice and puts a hefty price tag on greatness. The opposing force is, simply, the power of the story itself.
