Checking in on the Surreal 2021 Awards Calendar

PGA Goes Virtual

What a bizarre year this has been. Film awards will, in fact, roll out come hell or high water. All we can hope is that the Oscars aren’t virtual. That would be my Christmas wish. Either which way, film and TV feel kind of blurred since we’ll all be seeing most of these movies on streaming. We are all being forced now to adopt to the new model that is likely our future anyway. Will theaters die all the way? I hope not. But at some point it’s going to be harder to make an argument for “smaller” films to open in a theater, which will be given over to event movies. Maybe. Maybe not. Nothing is predictable at this point.

Truly, this is madness. For it only to be October and to have to parse a race that won’t come to a close until April is hard to fathom in the modern way we follow the race. But before the race became so back logged, when the date changed, the Oscars were held in late March. Back then, Oscar movies were SEEN in December and then evaluated starting in January. But it’s still hard to fathom.

One thing to note: Oscar nomination voting is just five days. From March 5-March 10.

The Producers Guild has announced that their show will be virtual:

“Our 2021 PGA Awards will look different than previous years with a shift to a virtual presentation, but we’re excited by the opportunity to put on our show in a more accessible, personal, and entirely new way. Shining a light on the tireless work of our peers and the pioneers of our industry who are leading us into the next chapter of entertainment will be a great way to reflect and regroup as we continue to move our industry forward. Amidst the changes happening all around us, our commitment to our members, and to uplifting the art and craft of producing, is steadfast,” said Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher, Presidents of the Producers Guild of America.

This list will be kept on our sidebar and we will continue to update it.
