Emmy Watch: Heigl is Out

Perhaps it was the zig-zagging with this guy and that guy, breaking up a marriage and who knows what else but Katherine Heigl, eager to make the leap to film, has removed her name from Emmy consideration from Grey’s Anatomy. If I’m reading this right, Grey’s has only had one actress win and that was for Heigl. This is embarrassing on multiple levels. The Emmys, never known for being exactly cutting edge, have ignored many great performers over the years but to not give anything ever to Chandra Wilson is truly sad. That woman is the best thing about the show, has always been the best thing about the show and makes Heigl’s win embarrassing. So, I can understand why she has taken her name out – I’m betting this is the reason why. If so, you go girl. Wilson has been nominated for two Emmys and won no Emmys.

But speaking of Grey’s, as an avid viewer of the show I can also say that two other actresses, well three counting Sandra Oh, have also been ignored: Ellen Pompeo and Kate Burton. That the Emmys have only awarded Heigl — and probably because she’s is an AILF. Or maybe it’s her film career. Perhaps she is becoming an awards darling without even knowing it – either way, if she is stepping out of the way to give other more deserving members a shot, this is a good thing. And the only way, probably, to combat the Academy’s need to award the same people year after year.
