Sherlock Holmes trailer

Posted by Ryan Adams On May - 18 - 2009

ok, not your grandfather’s Sherlock Holmes, but you know what? You can rent those. Holmes isn’t sacred to me, so I don’t mind Ritchie pulling him up by his post-modern Victorian rebootstraps.

Well a little over the top but looks very entertaining.

I hope there’s still a mystery involved, which is the essence of Holmes.

So glad to see Mark Strong’s name being featured. A wonderful actor who deserves to be better known. I began following his career after seeing him on a TV adaptation of Emma.

If I want a more authentic Holmes, there are still episodes of the Jeremy Brett series I’ve yet to see.

Does this look outlandish? Sure. Like Iron Man isn’t?
I don’t need source-material reverence for this. I got yer Rathbone, right here.

Agreee, daveylow. I’m hoping Ritchie gives us a knotty plotty mystery too.

  3. Watermelons May 18th, 2009 at 6:34 pm 3

Robert Downey Jr is a (Sher)LOCK for the “sexiest detective” Watermelons Awards.

  4. Yvette May 18th, 2009 at 6:39 pm 4

    LOVE the trailer!

  5. jab May 18th, 2009 at 6:46 pm 5

based on the script, there is no need to worry about the film lacking mystery…it’s pretty dark.

  6. dela May 18th, 2009 at 6:51 pm 6

This is no fuddy-duddy Sherlock Holmes. I like him very much. I think RDJ and Jude Law will be a great paring.

  7. RRA is on the Case May 18th, 2009 at 6:53 pm 7

    Watermelons – Ha.

Ryan – Weird how this trailer was cut like that awful VAN HELSING, so lets hope its just lazy playbook trailer cutting, at least I assume it is.

As for the movie itself….yeah why not, it could work. I mean Downey Jr. is a major movie star now and can open such a picture at Christmas, I just have doubts about Guy Ritchie.

Once upon a time, he was pretty good, then he pulled a Sean Penn, and SWEPT AWAY really fucked his career up….and REVOLVER didn’t help either.

Never saw ROCK N ROLLA, though some folks tell me its a return to form for Ritchie, so I need to see if thats the case.

Hey I’m all for a Ritchie comeback, and hey be nice if SHERLOCK HOLMES was enjoyable. Its interesting how some folks doubted Downey as a British fictional icon like Holmes, but the guy nailed CHAPLIN, so I never doubted him.

  8. Noah R. May 18th, 2009 at 6:55 pm 8

I was doing all right until the slow-motion fight scene. Brad Pitt in Snatch, anyone?

My ability to keep an open mind about this film has just decreased dramatically. Apart from what looks like a savvy double-act between Downey and Law, I see little progress in Guy Ritchie’s direction. Set this in modern-day London, replace Downey and Law with Jason Statham and Gerard Butler, and would you really know the difference?

Ritchie is likely to spend the rest of his career making mediocre (at best) films that everyone will give passes to on the basis that they’re not as bad as Swept Away and Revolver. I don’t care about the Sherlock Holmes of old; I still think this will probably be a dog.

Oh, and RRA, RockNRolla was a sell-out film if ever I saw one. It’s just Lock Stock and Snatch without the passion or energy that made those films work. Utterly forgettable.

  9. el barto May 18th, 2009 at 7:02 pm 9

Great fucking Trailer… I love the way they show (in the trailer at least) almost the same amount of screen time to both jude law and RDJ. great paring…
and when you see Rachel McAdams like that , thats when you know there is a god.

  10. RRA is on the Case May 18th, 2009 at 7:02 pm 10

Noah – You know I’m sure a Statham mark, I would go see a movie where Statham fights the whole British Victorian Empire, and wins.

As for ROCK N ROLLA….sorry to hear that. Thanks for the heads up.

  11. Proman May 18th, 2009 at 7:11 pm 11

I think Downey looks terribly miscast. Sorry but I’m not too impressed. I think I’m going to go back to re-reading to Asimov’s Sherlockian Limericks.

  12. SaltireFlower May 18th, 2009 at 7:16 pm 12

I liked the script, and I’ll watch Robert Downey Jr. in anything.

  13. Noah R. May 18th, 2009 at 7:21 pm 13

Well I have no problem with Statham either. I think he’s much better actor than he gets credit for and he was actually quite good in Revolver. My point is that it’s all the same from Ritchie. Like Wes Anderson.

  14. RRA's is Public Enemy #7 (Damn you Bin Laden you Showoff) May 18th, 2009 at 7:30 pm 14

    Noah – Good point.

I think Statham is actually a good actor, just thats usually forgotten because he’s hired to kick and beat people up. I mean shit, he showed off his natural badass physical charisma in BANK JOB, where he doesn’t get to go TRANSPORTER on folks that much.

  15. Afrika May 18th, 2009 at 7:31 pm 15

The Matrix Returns : back to 1887

    lol lol.

The most scruffy and shabby-looking Holmes I have ever seen in my life. Why do I keep thinking Jude Law is Holmes and Downey is Watson. The casting choice still surprises me.

I’ll be lying if I said the trailer didn’t excite me. It looks like it has all the elements of an action-packed thriller including deliciously delivered eye candy served by the beautiful Rachel McAdams. But this is exactly the problem. You know it is the end of days when Sherlock Holmes starts to look like Neo or James Bond. Damn you Hollywood.

    P.S
RRA, what the hell? how many times do you alter your username in a minute? wow! crack is wack, crack is cheap. ;)

  16. RRA Changes his nick just to bug Afrika May 18th, 2009 at 7:40 pm 16

Afrika – I’m like Prince of the AD talkbacks: I constantly change and (once) cool.

  17. harry May 18th, 2009 at 7:43 pm 17

This trailer cut is not made for me. I care far less about the eye candy than I do about RDJ’s take on Holmes. And this was mostly a series of one liners and slow motion fights. Blah.

  18. Seankgallagher May 18th, 2009 at 7:44 pm 18

So anyone who objects to this trailer and this movie is merely an old fuddy-duddy who should go back to their tea cozy, is that it?

    Bollocks.

Guy Ritchie has been going on a downhill slide ever since LOCK, STOCK (and no, ROCK-N-ROLLA was not a return to form), and the trailer makes it look not only like more of the same, but also like he watched THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN too many times, and that was a horrid movie.

Would Robert Downey Jr. make a good Holmes? Absolutely (and I think Jude Law is a good choice as Watson). Can you tell a Holmes story and update it to make it less musty? Sure – PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES did it within the period (though they had problems with Doyle’s estate, they still got in the idea of Holmes being gay and hinted at cocaine use), and ZERO EFFECT put it in the 20th century, and both films were terrific. And to use an analogous film, until the ending, FROM HELL was a reworking of a classic story that wasn’t musty at all and yet was quite entertaining. This looks like crap, even with that cast.

  19. Tory Smith May 18th, 2009 at 7:49 pm 19

    Based on the trailer:

Very action filled with a slight aspect of “pop horror” (think of the saw movies). Of course Downey and Law will be and look entertaining. I recently saw Happy Go Lucky, and Eddie is in this so I’m excited! And I’ve always said that Scarlett Johanasson is taking the roles that Rachael Mcadams should have, because Rachael is a hell of a lot better, so I’m glad to see her, though we didn’t hear her speak. By the look of the trailer I’m not interested, but I’m I know I want to see it!

Movie is probably better than the weak trailer.

Don’t worry, I’m not bugged. I’m rather amused. lol

  21. JR May 18th, 2009 at 8:21 pm 21

    Eh, doesn’t really interest me.

I’m thinking RDJ is a miscast already and yes…why does it feel Jude Law is the one playing Sherlock Holmes?. Well, at least it looks like it’s gonna have some good action sequences.

  22. amanda May 18th, 2009 at 8:30 pm 22

I think it looks good. I love Jude law. But I guess I didnt know it was coming out Christmas day. Now I will have to decide to go see this or the Meryl Streep Nancy Meyers movie..I shouldnt have to make those kind of decisions on Christmas.

  23. Tufas May 18th, 2009 at 8:59 pm 23

Well I didn’t like that at all, but then, never judge a book by its cover, so reserving it for the final product. Plus, love Downey Jr, not sure about that accent. Is it right? It seemed forced. Or is my non-english ear playing tricks on me? Is that London(ish)?

Afrika – WOLVERINE or OBSESSED trashed?

Tufas – Maybe I should review SHERLOCK HOLMES, thus make it yet another “shitty movie” I’ve reviewed, and ruin it just for you. :)

  25. Afrika May 18th, 2009 at 10:18 pm 25

    RRA
You clearly like the attention don’t you? lmao.
I could care less about Wolverine. As for Obsessed, despite what the critics think, it will go down as a cult classic especially the girl fight scene; truly EPIC. Beyonce mopping some skinny white girl’s ass on hard wood floor in six inch heels and breast-hugging vest is proof that some super power exists out there. I almost ejaculated during that scene. Sheer cinematic masterpiece. :)

  26. Bebe May 18th, 2009 at 10:27 pm 26

Downey Jr. keeps acting as if all his characters were the same…

This movie could go for a best costume design or art direction nomination, nothing beyond that sincerely. And I actually think those categories will find much more deserving proyects to honour.

  31. HaroldsMaude May 19th, 2009 at 12:00 am 31

I liked elements of this trailer but that’s what it felt like. Familiar parts of an incoherent whole. Part Pirates of the Carribbean. Part Zorro. Part Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (complete with homosexual undertones).

With a terrific RDJ at the center of it all. For the part he’s playing here, he’s very well cast. Ironman made us believe in the action stunts. His background makes us believe in the substance use and cavorting around. His sharp wit and intelligence of the tortured soul that characterizes most of his parts makes us believe that he can solve crime problems with ease. He’ll be fun to watch.

It just feels like Sherlock Holmes is merely a device for this film, not that it’s a current version of a Sherlock Holmes story.

  32. Afrika May 19th, 2009 at 12:14 am 32

    RRA
I’m flattered that you think we are one but we are, um, not the same. I spend my time defending myself…you spend your time advertizing yourself. ;)

Good point on Downey. I just think he is flat out overrated.

Mmmm let me guess Snatch meets Pirates Movie (with Johnny Depp) meets James Bond? Haha, I don’t know, looks good though.

  37. Hunter May 19th, 2009 at 5:36 am 37

Anyone who thinks Robert Downey Jr. is “overrated” is an idiot and every opinion they have about anything to do with acting should be ignored.

  38. Jesus Alonso May 19th, 2009 at 7:27 am 38

Continuing my trend to compare a year’s releases with previous year’s… this could be 2009’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Can Downey, Jr pull off a Lead Actor nom for this one? He surely is Sacha Baron Cohen’s main competitor for the Comedy Globe.

  39. Aleksis May 19th, 2009 at 8:14 am 39

I don’t think I can like Downey Jr. again until those memories of the vile Oscar Roundtable videos are purged from my mind for good. *shudder*

    Jude Law looks hot again.

when did we get to be so

  42. bored May 20th, 2009 at 2:43 am 42

looks good… I’ll check it out. I like RDJ.

  43. Amy May 21st, 2009 at 3:06 pm 43

I don’t know much about the books, but I’m pretty sure this is nothing like them. haha It looks like an excuse to show Robert Downey Jr. without a shirt on for much of the film. Somehow, I don’t think the ladies will mind… However, in response to what was previously stated, I doubt there’s an Oscar nomination here since Downey just got a nod for a non-conventional film last year. They probably want him to star in a Holocaust drama next. (No offense to Holocaust dramas intended)

  44. Scott May 22nd, 2009 at 7:39 pm 44

Well this is not the Classic Holmes, but i like it. Is more vanguardist, has more action, and involve the fact most people don’t know about Sherlock Holmes: that he was a great boxer. It has still the mystery, and his intelligence, but this Holmes is more dynamic.

People are used to the traditional Holmes and don’t seem to accept a different, more venturous and fun take on the fictional character.

“While I’m obviously not ruling it out, I don’t think Avatar will win Best Picture, and the new preferential voting system is precisely why. Had they stuck with just having each member vote on their favorite of the nominees, it might have won, but something tells me that there are a lot of people within the Academy who are part of the backlash against the film, and will therefore place it at #10 on their ballots. You have to keep in mind that from now on, the movie with the most #1 votes is not necessarily the movie that wins. It’s easy to imagine Avatar will get a lot of #1 votes, but it’s equally easy to imagine it will get a lot of #10 votes as well, and that will really hurt it.

So you kind of have to think more along the lines of which movie will have the least against it, rather than the most for it. The Hurt Locker will undoubtedly get a lot of #1 votes as it is the frontrunner, and while I’m sure there will be those who put it at or near the bottom of their ballots, it seems to me that it will have a lot less low-end placements than Avatar will, and so The Hurt Locker easily has the edge over Avatar in that respect.

Inglourious Basterds also seems like the kind of movie that will split voters. It’ll get a lot of #1 and #2 votes, but probably also a lot of #9 and #10 votes. So I don’t think it’ll win (though again, I’m not ruling it out). Precious will probably get less 9’s and 10’s, but I frankly don’t think it will get enough 1’s and 2’s to pull off a win. I think it’ll get mostly mid-range votes. Same goes for Up in the Air, though I imagine even that will get more 1’s and 2’s than Precious will.

So to sum it up, I think The Hurt Locker, while not an absolute, no-turning-back lock, is still the clear frontrunner in this race. If we’re talking about a potential upset though, why not really factor in the new preferential voting system and try to imagine how much that could end up benefiting a film like, say, Up? While it might not get too many #1 votes, I can easily see it getting a lot of 2-4 votes, and who know? If the frontrunners all develop strong enough backlashes, then it could be that this year’s Best Picture will go not to the movie that is the most liked, but rather the movie that is the least DISliked. Just saying.”
