Nominations Poll: Some Preliminary Results

pie-1

Confirming Sasha’s post this morning about the possibility of a lone director being nominated tomorrow while his movie is not — results from our Awards Daily Poll are showing Darren Aronofsky edging out Ron Howard by a few dozen votes for the 5th position. What’s even more interesting to me is how you guys came so close the same conclusions on November 3rd last, when we ran a similar poll. You can compare the results side by side after the cut.

Here’s the cute pie-chart with all portions divided up pretty much as we’ve been saying for months. Comparison of this pie with November’s pie is also after the cut. Remember: when you voted in November, just about the only movies most of us had seen were WALL-E and The Dark Knight. That didn’t stop you from correctly guessing which of the unseen contenders would still be in play 3 months later. (Australia was really our only major blunder).

Does this mean we’re just supersmart and exceptionally good at this game? ok, yeah, but let’s not get too cocky until we see what happens 15 hours from now. It’s also an indication of how the process is so tightly controlled by studios and publicists that we seem to get fed exactly what they want us to swallow.

I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I know I’d feel a lot better if the movies that get anointed in October could all turn out to be as tasty as a serving of cool refreshing Milk. That’s not always the case though. I wish there could be more wiggle room to order a la carte, instead of the fixed menu we get handed every season. There’s a big slice of Aged Slowburn Cheese every year, whether we can stomach it or not. Can I substitute something for the Half-Baked History Loaf? Apparently not.

Don’t forget to vote, if you haven’t already. (No prize except the pleasure of pretending to an AMPAS member.)

Not to be confused with Sasha’s Annual Predictions Contest (Where you could win as much as 20 Ruppees!)
