Emmy Predictions Shall We?

Sasha Stone by Sasha Stone

Let’s do this thing. The awards are Sunday night and for my money they are always ghastly. But here goes.

Outstanding Made For Television Movie

  • Coco Chanel
  • Grey Gardens
  • Into The Storm
  • Prayers For Bobby
  • Taking Chance

And the Emmy will go to: Grey Gardens

Outstanding Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock
  • Entourage
  • Family Guy
  • Flight Of The Conchords
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • The Office
  • Weeds

Because it’s the boring old Emmys, we’re probably looking at another 30 Rock win. The Office could give it some trouble.

Outstanding Drama Series

  • Big Love
  • Breaking Bad
  • Damages
  • Dexter
  • House
  • Lost
  • Mad Men

A no-brainer, it will be Mad Men. Lost has no shot, House maybe kinda because they love House. Dexter, not really mainstream enough, Big Love is great but probably not. Damages is good but it’s no Mad Men.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Alec Baldwin, as Jack Donaghy
  • Flight Of The Conchords ‚Ä¢ Jemaine Clement, as Jemaine
  • Monk ‚Ä¢ Tony Shalhoub, as Adrian Monk
  • The Big Bang Theory ‚Ä¢ Jim Parsons, as Sheldon Cooper
  • The Office ‚Ä¢ Steve Carell, as Michael Scott
  • Two And A Half Men ‚Ä¢ Charlie Sheen, as Charlie Harper

They love them their Charlie Sheen but I think Alec Baldwin takes it again. It could be Steve Carell. The Emmys are like bad Indian food: they always repeat on you, almost always.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

  • Breaking Bad ‚Ä¢ Bryan Cranston, as Walter White
  • Dexter ‚Ä¢ Michael C. Hall, as Dexter Morgan
  • House ‚Ä¢ Hugh Laurie, as Dr. Gregory House
  • In Treatment ‚Ä¢ Gabriel Byrne, as Paul
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ Jon Hamm, as Don Draper
  • The Mentalist ‚Ä¢ Simon Baker, as Patrick Jane

Jon Hamm SHOULD win this in a walk but it seems like Hugh Laurie will take it to me. Maybe Michael C. Hall in a shocker.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie

  • 24: Redemption ‚Ä¢ Kiefer Sutherland, as Jack Bauer
  • Cyrano de Bergerac (Great Performances) ‚Ä¢ Kevin Kline, as Cyrano de Bergerac
  • Into The Storm ‚Ä¢ Brendan Gleeson, as Winston Churchill
  • King Lear (Great Performances) ‚Ä¢ Sir Ian McKellen, as King Lear
  • Taking Chance ‚Ä¢ Kevin Bacon, as LtCol Mike Strobl
  • Wallander: One Step Behind ‚Ä¢ Kenneth Branagh, as Kurt Wallander

Probably it’s Kevin Kline vs. Sir Ian McKellen. Holy fuck how do not vote for Ian McKellen? He’s my prediction.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Tina Fey, as Liz Lemon
  • Samantha Who? ‚Ä¢ Christina Applegate, as Samantha Newly
  • The New Adventures Of Old Christine ‚Ä¢ Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as Christine
  • The Sarah Silverman Program ‚Ä¢ Sarah Silverman, as Sarah Silverman
  • United States Of Tara ‚Ä¢ Toni Collette, as Tara Gregson
  • Weeds ‚Ä¢ Mary-Louise Parker, as Nancy Botwin

Yes, it’s probably going to be Tina Fey.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

  • Brothers & Sisters ‚Ä¢ Sally Field, as Nora Walker
  • Damages ‚Ä¢ Glenn Close, as Patty Hewes
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ‚Ä¢ Mariska Hargitay, as Detective Olivia Benson
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ Elisabeth Moss, as Peggy Olson
  • Saving Grace ‚Ä¢ Holly Hunter, as Grace Hanadarko
  • The Closer ‚Ä¢ Kyra Sedgwick, as Brenda Leigh Johnson

Kyra and Holly may cancel each other out. Glenn Close has a shot, probably not Mariska Hargitay, probably not Elisabeth Moss (lead??). Gun to my head I say Sally Field but Jesus Christ it better not be Sally Field.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie

  • Accidental Friendship ‚Ä¢ Chandra Wilson, as Yvonne
  • Coco Chanel ‚Ä¢ Shirley MacLaine, as Coco Chanel
  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Drew Barrymore, as Little Edie
  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Jessica Lange, as Big Edie
  • Prayers For Bobby ‚Ä¢ Sigourney Weaver, as Mary Griffith

Ugh, why Drew against Jessica for this? I think Drew Barrymore wins it.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Tracy Morgan, as Tracy Jordan
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Jack McBrayer, as Kenneth Parcell
  • Entourage ‚Ä¢ Kevin Dillon, as Johnny Drama
  • How I Met Your Mother ‚Ä¢ Neil Patrick Harris, as Barney Stinson
  • The Office ‚Ä¢ Rainn Wilson, as Dwight Schrute
  • Two And A Half Men ‚Ä¢ Jon Cryer, as Alan Harper

I’m going to say Jon Cryer gets it but in this category I have absolutely no idea (and as I’m writing this occurs to me that I might actually have to WATCH the Emmys).

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

  • Boston Legal ‚Ä¢ William Shatner, as Denny Crane
  • Boston Legal ‚Ä¢ Christian Clemenson, as Jerry Espenson
  • Breaking Bad ‚Ä¢ Aaron Paul, as Jesse Pinkman
  • Damages ‚Ä¢ William Hurt, as Daniel Purcell
  • Lost ‚Ä¢ Michael Emerson, as Ben Linus
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ John Slattery, as Roger Sterling

Yeah, maybe John Slattery, maybe William Shatner. I suppose old Ben Linus could steal it. No idea.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie

  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Ken Howard, as Phelan Beale
  • Into The Storm ‚Ä¢ Len Cariou, as Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • Little Dorrit ‚Ä¢ Tom Courtenay, as Mr. Dorrit
  • Little Dorrit ‚Ä¢ Andy Serkis, as Rigaud
  • The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice ‚Ä¢ Bob Newhart, as Judson

I have no idea but I’ll go on Bob Newhart for old time’s sake.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Jane Krakowski, as Jenna Maroney
  • Pushing Daisies ‚Ä¢ Kristin Chenoweth, as Olive Snook
  • Saturday Night Live ‚Ä¢ Amy Poehler, as Various Characters
  • Saturday Night Live ‚Ä¢ Kristin Wiig, as Various Characters
  • Ugly Betty ‚Ä¢ Vanessa Williams, as Wilhelmina Slater
  • Weeds ‚Ä¢ Elizabeth Perkins, as Celia Hodes

Oh who knows but perhaps Jane Krakowski from 30 Rock.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

  • 24 ‚Ä¢ Cherry Jones, as President Allison Taylor
  • Damages ‚Ä¢ Rose Byrne, as Ellen Parsons
  • Grey’s Anatomy ‚Ä¢ Sandra Oh, as Dr. Christina Yang
  • Grey’s Anatomy ‚Ä¢ Chandra Wilson, as Dr. Miranda Bailey
  • In Treatment ‚Ä¢ Dianne Wiest, as Gina
  • In Treatment ‚Ä¢ Hope Davis, as Mia

Chandra Wilson deserves this — OF COURSE — but she may cancel out with Sandra Oh. Dianne Wiest is always a threat. Maybe Rose Byrne – I guess I’ll go out on a limb and guess Chandra Wilson finally takes that sucker home.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie

  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Jeanne Tripplehorn, as Jackie O.
  • House Of Saddam ‚Ä¢ Shohreh Aghdashloo, as Sajida
  • Into The Storm ‚Ä¢ Janet McTeer, as Clementine Churchill
  • Relative Stranger ‚Ä¢ Cicely Tyson, as Pearl
  • The Courageous Heart Of Irena Sendler ‚Ä¢ Marcia Gay Harden, as Janina

This is one I have absolutely no clue about – but it’s hilarious to me that Jeanne Tripplehorn was even nominated for such a short part. I will guess Marcia Gay Harden wins. A totally blind and ignorant stab in the dark.

Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Apollo, Apollo ‚Ä¢ Millicent Shelton
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Reunion ‚Ä¢ Beth McCarthy
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Generalissimo ‚Ä¢ Todd Holland
  • Entourage ‚Ä¢ Tree Trippers ‚Ä¢ Julian Farino
  • Flight Of The Conchords ‚Ä¢ The Tough Brets ‚Ä¢ James Bobin
  • The Office ‚Ä¢ Stress Relief ‚Ä¢ Jeff Blitz

I can’t really guess here, especially since there are three nominations for 30 Rock. So maybe The Office will take it.

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series

  • Battlestar Galactica ‚Ä¢ Daybreak (Part 2) ‚Ä¢ Michael Rymer
  • Boston Legal ‚Ä¢ Made In China/Last Call ‚Ä¢ Bill D’Elia
  • Damages ‚Ä¢ Trust Me ‚Ä¢ Todd A. Kessler
  • ER ‚Ä¢ And In The End ‚Ä¢ Rod Holcomb
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ The Jet Set ‚Ä¢ Phil Abraham

Should be Mad Men.

Outstanding Directing For Nonfiction Programming

  • Project Runway ‚Ä¢ Finale (Part 1) ‚Ä¢ Paul Starkman
  • Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired ‚Ä¢ Marina Zenovich
  • The Amazing Race ‚Ä¢ Don’t Let A Cheese Hit Me ‚Ä¢ Bertram van Munster
  • This American Life ‚Ä¢ John Smith ‚Ä¢ Adam Beckman
  • Top Chef ‚Ä¢ The Last Supper ‚Ä¢ Steve Hrynewicz

If they had any brains it would be Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired but since it’s up against THE AMAZING RACE, which wins every year – who knows if voters will even notice that the Polanski doc is on the ballot.

Outstanding Directing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special

  • Generation Kill ‚Ä¢ Bomb In The Garden ‚Ä¢ Susanna White
  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Michael Sucsy
  • Into The Storm ‚Ä¢ Thaddeus O’Sullivan
  • Little Dorrit ‚Ä¢ Part 1 ‚Ä¢ Dearbhla Walsh
  • Taking Chance ‚Ä¢ Ross Katz
  • Wallander: One Step Behind ‚Ä¢ Philip Martin

Grey Gardens in a walk.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Reunion ‚Ä¢ Matt Hubbard
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Apollo, Apollo ‚Ä¢ Robert Carlock
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Mamma Mia ‚Ä¢ Ron Weiner
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Kidney Now! ‚Ä¢ Jack Burditt, Robert Carlock
  • Flight Of The Conchords ‚Ä¢ Prime Minister ‚Ä¢ James Bobin, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie

One of the 30 Rocks.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

  • Lost ‚Ä¢ The Incident ‚Ä¢ Carlton Cuse, Damon Lindelof
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ A Night To Remember ‚Ä¢ Robin Veith, Matthew Weiner
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ Six Month Leave ‚Ä¢ Andre Jacquemetton, Maria Jacquemetton, Matthew Weiner
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ The Jet Set ‚Ä¢ Matthew Weiner
  • Mad Men ‚Ä¢ Meditations In An Emergency ‚Ä¢ Kater Gordon, Matthew Weiner

Mad Men: A Night to Remember – but wouldn’t it be funny if it was Lost?

Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special

  • Generation Kill ‚Ä¢ Bomb In The Garden ‚Ä¢ David Simon
  • Grey Gardens ‚Ä¢ Michael Sucsy, Patricia Rozema,
  • Into The Storm ‚Ä¢ Hugh Whitemore
  • Little Dorrit ‚Ä¢ Andrew Davies
  • Taking Chance ‚Ä¢ LtCol Michael R. Strobl, Ross Katz

I’ll go for Grey Gardens for the sweep.

Outstanding Nonfiction Series

  • American Experience ‚Ä¢ PBS
  • American Masters ‚Ä¢ PBS
  • Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations ‚Ä¢ Travel Channel
  • Biography ‚Ä¢ BIO
  • Deadliest Catch ‚Ä¢ Discovery Channel
  • This American Life ‚Ä¢ Showtime

No Reservations probably – everybody loves Bourdain.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Gavin Volure ‚Ä¢ Steve Martin, as Gavin Volure
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ The Bubble ‚Ä¢ Jon Hamm, as Dr. Drew Baird
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Mamma Mia ‚Ä¢ NBC ‚Ä¢ Alan Alda, as Milton Greene
  • Desperate Housewives ‚Ä¢ The Best Thing That Ever Could Have Happened ‚Ä¢ Beau Bridges, as Eli Boggs
  • Saturday Night Live ‚Ä¢ Host: Justin Timberlake ‚Ä¢ Justin Timberlake, as Various Characters

Just no clue at all but I’ll go for Steve Martin.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series

  • CSI: NY ‚Ä¢ Yahrzeit ‚Ä¢ Edward Asner, as Abraham Klein
  • Damages ‚Ä¢ They Had to Tweeze That Out of My Kidney ‚Ä¢ Ted Danson, as Arthur Frobisher
  • Dexter ‚Ä¢ Go Your Own Way ‚Ä¢ Jimmy Smits, as Miguel Prado
  • ER ‚Ä¢ And In The End ‚Ä¢ Ernest Borgnine, as Paul Manning
  • Rescue Me ‚Ä¢ Sheila ‚Ä¢ Michael J. Fox, as Dwight

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ The One With The Cast Of ‘Night Court’ ‚Ä¢ Jennifer Aniston, as Claire
  • 30 Rock ‚Ä¢ Christmas Special ‚Ä¢ Elaine Stritch, as Colleen Donaghy
  • Monk ‚Ä¢ Mr. Monk And The Lady Next Door ‚Ä¢ Gena Rowlands, as Marge
  • My Name Is Earl ‚Ä¢ Witch Lady ‚Ä¢ Betty White, as Crazy Witch Lady
  • Saturday Night Live ‚Ä¢ Presidential Bash 2008 ‚Ä¢ Tina Fey, as Governor Sarah Palin (Spoof)
  • The Big Bang Theory ‚Ä¢ The Maternal Capacitance ‚Ä¢ Christine Baranski, as Beverly Hofstadter

Tina Fey in a walk.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series

  • Grey’s Anatomy ‚Ä¢ No Good At Saying Sorry (One More Chance) ‚Ä¢ Sharon Lawrence, as Robbie Stevens
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ‚Ä¢ Swing ‚Ä¢ Ellen Burstyn, as Bernadette Stabler
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ‚Ä¢ Persona ‚Ä¢ Brenda Blethyn, as Linnie Malcolm/Caroline Cantwell
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ‚Ä¢ Ballerina ‚Ä¢ Carol Burnett, as Bridget “Birdie” Sulloway
  • The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ‚Ä¢ The Boy With The African Heart ‚Ä¢ CCH Pounder, as Mrs. Curtin

Wouldn’t it be great if CCH Pounder got it? Carol Burnett was great in that SVU – I’ll guess she wins it.
