SAG Nominations Preview, and Contest

The SAG nominations are coming early Wednesday morning. The Screen Actors Guild have become a fairly decent harbinger of the Oscars simply because once a consensus builds it is very difficult to shake it up. But the SAG nominations, like the New York Film Critics, the National Board of Review and the Golden Globe come early in the season, which means they can sometimes be better influencers than they are predictors.  Last year, the SAGs matched up with Oscar fairly decently in Best Actor, only missing one.  They missed two in Best Actress, none in Supporting Actor, one in Supporting Actress and Ensemble.  They are one of the few major guild awards to announce before Oscar ballots are turned in. The DGA is announced just a day before the ballot deadline. The PGA has a little more lag time.

Just because a contender doesn’t show up on SAG’s list doesn’t mean they can’t be pushed into the Oscar race.  The nominating committee is small, but it is still a random selection of actors, as opposed to the actors branch in the Academy where mostly successful actors vote.  All that means is that their tastes can sometimes be different.  The Academy often goes for bigger stars, where SAG voters can sometimes go more independent.  Last year’s inclusion of Joaquin Phoenix over John Hawkes, for example.  A last minute push can make the difference between one contender or another depending on what the chatter is.  The Master was appreciated more overall by the Academy than any other group and a lot of that has to do with Paul Thomas Anderson, and his faithful ensemble of actors.

As such, I’m not really sure how they’re going to go. I’ll be posting my predictions later one but here is some background info and a contest to get you started.

I would be shocked, though, if ensemble didn’t out to be five from this pile:

American Hustle
August: Osage County
The Butler
Nebraska
Blue Jasmine
The Wolf of Wall Street (maybe)
Inside Llewyn Davis
