Best Original Song Contenders – Can Anything Stop Lady Gaga And Bradley Cooper’s Shallow?

Jazz Tangcay by Jazz Tangcay
December 1, 2018
in 91st Academy Awards, BEST ORIGINAL SONG
0

Ever since the A Star Is Born trailer teased a snippet of Shallow, Lady Gaga’s “AHHHHHHH HAA AHHHHAHHHHH” became an internet sensation. Memes, gifs, and videos of just that clip filled our timeline all Summer.

Shallow is written by Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt. The song is a duet between Cooper’s Jackson Maine and Gaga’s Ally and comes when Maine has transformed some lyrics that Ally has been toying with. He drags her on stage during one of his concerts to perform with him and we see her go from nervous to confident, finding comfort on that stage as she belts out the lyrics.

Yes, Shallow is the song to beat for Best Original Song and here’s the video to remind you of just how memorable the song is.

2.32 –  Sing it with me “AHHHHHHH HAA AHHHHAHHHHH I’m off the deep end/watch as I dive in.”

Elsewhere, Diane Warren has written I’ll Fight for RBG. Jennifer Hudson performs the song that plays over the end title credits. The nine-time Oscar nominee is seeking her tenth nomination with this anthem that transcends the film. Warren says, “Look at how important Ruth Bader Ginsberg is and how important it is to stand up for something, to fight for your rights, and to not be complacent.”

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns offers “Trip A Little Light Fantastic” a dazzling eight-minutes sequence written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Lin-Manuel Miranda puts on a fine Cockney accent as he leads Mary Poppins and a host of lamplighters through the streets of London.

Disney’s other offerings include The Place Where Lost Things Go (Mary Poppins Returns) and A Place Called Slaughter Race (Wreck-It-Ralph: Ralph Breaks The Internet and Kendrick Lamar’s All The Stars from Black Panther.

Troye Sivan’s Revelation features in Boy Erased. “It’s a revelation/there’s no hell in what I’ve found/No kingdom shout,” Sings Sivan who also stars in the film about Gay Conversion Therapy.

Annie Lennox delivers Requiem For A Private War. A moving ballad accompanying the film A Private War starring Rosamund Pike. The film tells the heroism of journalist Marie Colvin who was killed while seeking to tell the truth about the tragedies of war.

Dolly Parton’s beautiful Girl In The Movies appears in Netflix’s Dumplin’. It’s one of six songs that Parton wrote for the film and is sung from the point of view of Dumplin’ the title character as she sings about the desire to have the confidence to follow her dreams.

Kesha’s Here Comes The Change is taken from On The Basis of Sex. Another song inspired by the great Justice Ginsberg. The film is based on RBG’s younger years as she fights gender discrimination and her fight that eventually takes her to the highest seat in the land.
“Oh it’s hard, I know it’s hard / To be the lightning in the dark / Hold on tight you’ll be alright / You know it’s time” Kesha sings

Wrapped Up by Sia can be heard in Vox Lux’s trailer and is also in the running.

Treasure by Sampha features in Beautiful Boy and plays over the end credits.

What other songs might make the list?

We probably shouldn’t forget Celine Dion’s Ashes from Deadpool 2…
