Shot after glorious shot. All hail Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins. Holy hell on fire.
1917
In Theaters December
https://www.1917.movieSam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
Saw the trailer last night on JOKER… I already wanted to see it so not like it had to convince me, but the DEAKINS alone looks remarkable… And given the variety of what happens in the trailer, trying to picture in my head how all that stuff could possibly be contained in one shot makes my ears bleed… In a good way.
Hollywood never fails to gain some picturesque heroism out of a war.
All hail the DEAKINS!! I didn’t even know anything about this film until about a month ago other than it existed. Now I’m looking forward to it more than most other things this year… AND I HAVEN’T EVEN WATCHED THE NEW TRAILER!
This is just another over rated Dunkirk ; it’s never going to win BP … I recognised Dunkirk as a BP dud just from the trailer and I see something similar here .. in fact it’s worse cos everyone is familiar with WW2 against the Nazis , few voters will be familiar or even care about some obscure battle from WW1 a hundred years ago … no one will care about the events in this movie no matter how well produced it is
Also, maybe the vastly overdue Thomas Newman is a possibility as well, depending on competition.
YAAASSSS
Looks phenomenal. Like, wow.
Cinematography looks kinda weak this year. This is a category that almost always go to BP frontrunners and besides this film, I can see only The Irishman, OUTIH and maybe Jojo Rabbit as serious contenders in main categories. None of them look visual technical marvels as this film looks. There’s really great chances Deakins is winning his second Oscar.
Pain & Glory seems to me among the top 3 contenders along Joker and the obvious winner, 1917
He needs to catch up to where he should be haha
The Revenant meets Saving Private Ryan, in real-time?
I’m so looking forward to Roger Deakins’ second Oscar & glad that it’s for a Mendes film, as their collaborations together have been varied and great (Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, obviously Skyfall).
Also looks like a strong BD contender, although he’ll have Tarantino & Scorsese to contend with – two prior winners, and one still waiting for his first directing win. Although Scorsese is certainly due a second win, it may count in Mendes’ favour that this film is so entirely different from American Beauty – I’m not sure if Oscar glory tends to favour the diverse or the consistent when it comes to directing?
Fun year – this looks great!
At this point, Best Director seems.
1. Mendes
2. Scorsese
3. Bong or Almodovar
4. Tarantino or Waititi
5. Baumbach
If this film is as impressive as it seems it could be Mendes should be a shoo-in for BD… for a nom at least
I think he has it in the bag, already, unless precursors indicate that it is QTs time, go insanely for Bong or Almodovar or praise Marty’s as his best film. But the stunt will likely make him go on top of the competition. Nom is locked, just from the trailer.
Oh wow – You think Tarantino is that shaky?
I definitely agree Mendes & Scorsese are out front, and I also feel like Baumbach will cement his place (although only time will tell).
I’m so in two about Bong, though – I mean the buzz about it is loud, but as people also keep pointing out, no film from South Korea has ever made it into Foreign Language Film. Should we really be so positive it will break all the way into BP & BD? Almodovar’s film seems way more up their alley, but certainly less hype about it at this point. Obviously we shall see how things pan out.
I think Tarantino’s doesn’t resist the slightest analysis without making the reviewer/analyst realize, his film is self-congratulatory, onanistic and tailor made for sweeping the Oscars. You can really see this at two moments in the film… the repeated research of Leo’s character to deliver his lines (designed to let Leo show off his acting skills and in which everything is designed to underline what a great performance we are watching) and in the insert of the voice coming out of TV saying “and now the moment you all have been waiting for” when the night of the Manson Family murders finally arrives.
Sure, but that’s never stopped them before. You could poke plenty of holes in Basterds (which I love, but am still surprised the Academy loved) & Django (which I very much don’t love – crass and overlong).
I don’t think it’ll win, but I think he’ll be nominated.
Basterds and Django were extremely honest films. Hollywood is an exercise of onanism, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, technically speaking, it is extremely good. Conceptually, it is Inglorious Basterds redux, and now aiming to sweep the Awards race.
On Bong vs Almodovar, I am increasingly thinking they will BOTH score picture, director, original screenplay and International film noms, making it the most interesting “clash” of the night. I am thinking…
Parasite
Picture
Director
Original Screnplay
International Film
Pain and Glory
Picture
Director
Actor
Original Screenplay
Score
Cinematography
International Film
… and maybe Film Editing and / or Production Design
I would love that, but don’t buy it.
I think Pain and Glory will have better legs than Parasite, ultimately.
Last year’s classy foreign language double whammy in BD & Cinematography (triple whammy in cinematography) was likely more of a fluke than a trend. (I read it as a bit of a post-Baftas “high brow” push-back against the populist trend of the season).
I also think Antonio Banderas is a pretty sure thing (he seems perfect for the kind of subtle, intimate 5th slot performances the Academy has a habit of singling out, even in busy awards seasons – see Javier Bardem in Biutiful, Demian Bichir in A Better Life, Ruth Negga in Loving, Marion Cotillard in 2 Days, 1 Night, Charlotte Ramping in 45 years, etc)
Just back from Joker. I’m not sure how I feel. I think it’s too real kind of like Requiem for a Dream. Phoenix is just as good as Ledger if not better. We walked out and my boyfriend’s first comment was ‘…shit that was a lot…’ and I immediately said ‘I never want to see that movie again’. But it’s not because it’s bad…like I said just too real.
I don’t think it lands a Best Picture nom at this point. It’s going to be too divisive. But if Phoenix doesn’t get a nod it’s only because all this hoo ha about Joker being a hero, etc. He’s incredible.
I’ve blocked whoever responded to this so can’t read it. Sorry!
I agree about getting Best Pic. Sitting at a low 70 percent on RT with plenty of reviews giving low scores. Like you said, too divisive. But there’s no way they can ignore Phoenix so the question becomes, can he be the first to win Best Actor without being in a Best Pic nominated film since Jeff Bridges? I think he can. Even the people that hate the movie have said he was good in the film and combined with the fact he doesn’t have an Oscar? Seems like a done deal to me.
We’ve had extremely loud and incredibly close, and bohemian Rhapsody get in for best picture. So anything is possible.
Yeah but those were both uplifting. Joker is a dark and divisive film in a year with plenty of other options
Does anybody think a “downer” movie will win best picture? I think the American public and cinemaphiles want something that’s uplifting. This has been such a terrible year full of (weather) disasters and (violent) disasters….just saying.
Makes sense Crap Book won last year after all and the Fish Fucker movie won the year before.
So, we have the Cinematography winner already. Probably Director, too.
Ok, seriously. I don’t see how they are saying this is all one shot when we have people speaking in reverse shots showing someone talking and then their reactions like with Colin Firth’s speech. It shows him speaking with the camera behind the guys but then shows them reacting to what he’s saying. Even if it stays on him for half the conversation and moves around to show them during the other half, I don’t see how they ended up with the footage they are showing. Also, when the guy opens the door and gets his helmet shot off, there’s a cut right there and then it shows him falling back down the stairs. Could be from a different part of the movie, sure, but didn’t look like it. Besides, I wasn’t impressed with the trailer regardless. Thought the first one was much more powerful.
Have they confirmed it’s ALL in one shot? Could be it’s more “traditional” until they get their assignment, and then goes into real-time with a single shot as the clock starts ticking? Or else it’s just smart trailer editing. It’s doubtful they’d market it as a single-shot film if it very obviously isn’t. (Obviously it’s not literally one take – they’ve been clear about the fact that there are masked cuts, as there were in Birdman – the real-time ticking clock is more the point)
I think at least someone took an image of the first page of the script which said something along the lines that the entire film was written to be made in one shot
Oh wow. Makes sense. It’s a great device for the type of story. I’m really excited to see how they pulled it off – especially with Deakins involved.
Of course it won’t be one continuous shot it’ll be a bunch of shots cut together to look continuous. i don’t think anyone thinks it is just one shot
I’d say to the first thing: the camera is slightly moving in each of those reaction shots, and I’d imagine that if it was just a standard reaction shot, the camera would mostly be still (meaning that it probably does float between the two sides) and to the second: that could easiest be achieved by a simple whip pan
Looks pretty freakin good, to me.
I see potential noms for Picture, Director, Cinematography, Production Design, Sounds, Score … at the very least.
Keeping my eye on this one, for sure.
It’s just a trailer but that LOOKS like a bonafide threat to win BP/Director/Cinematography at the very least.
If this and LW and RJ and Bombshell and Q&S stick their landings…then what? This is why I don’t think these Netflix movies like Two Popes and Dolemite ultimately get BP noms and possibly not the acting noms many are predicting. Personally, I don’t think all those previously mentions (LW, RJ, Bombshell, Q&S) all stick their landing. But even if 1917 and only ONE of those do, that mucks up things quite a bit.
Pure hunch :
– 1917 will be the real deal and a major threat in Picture and Director.
– Little Women will be good/great but no modern masterpiece. Will get a bunch of nods but will have only one notable win in Adapted Screenplay aka the one main category where being the umpteenth adaptation of something isn’t a disadvantage but almost a requirement.
– Richard Jewell could very well be a contender across the board. I think in particular Hauser in Best Actor may just end up being the big surprise of the season.
– Bombshell will get good reviews yet ironically enough its only acting nomination will be in supporting actor : John Lithgow.
– Queen and Slim will be this year’s The Hate U Give. Timely ? Check. Critically acclaimed ? Check. Somewhat disappointing Box Office and not much of an awards campaign ? We’ll see but that would be my guess for now. Hopefully I will be wrong because it does look very good sight unseen.
I don’t know if they pulled it off narratively but based on the the two trailers and the featurette alone, Deakins sure af is starting to look undeniable for another win in Best Cinematography.
Side note : Damn what if something almost unprecedented happens as in ALL last minute entries – 1917, Little Women, Richard Jewell, Bombshell, Queen and Slim – deliver ?
sorry not feeling it… its a trailer edited for an action movie, pop vocals and all. slightly less hyped
If they want to campaign with that ”single-shot” aspect, why have a trailer with so many edits? The teaser was more effective.
And yes, Deakins will probably win an Oscar. Hopefully Newman’s score is great too. Would be good to see him FINALLY win on his 15th nomination.
I couldn’t help but… I felt those “Frodo & Sam” vibes
Looks great and I wouldn’t be that shocked if George Mackay enters the Best Actor race – he has already shown great promise and 1917 seems to be a really good movie (and the AMPAS loves war epics). Good job, Sam Mendes (for the trailer alone)!!! And that cinematography work… Wow!
I’m not sure how I feel about the film but.. Woah, that Deakins.
“Woah, that Deakins.” lol I don’t know why but lol
I want this film to win the Oscar. It is the kind of film I love. Trailer is superb!
Can we see the movie first before making ridiculous, hyperbolic statements like this? It could be amazing. It could be junk. A trailer is never the definitive answer.
It looks like Saving Private Ryan, but only in WWI….IMO.
