Sinners, The Best Film of the Year, Gets a Re-Release in Imax for Halloween

The WB is in the new as it's being shopped around for potential buyers, including Netflix, which is a little surprising considering it's has such a successful year with big movies bringing in big crowds (for the most part, with one notable exception). They are re-releasing Ryan Coogler's Sinners on IMAX just in time for Halloween. From Variety: “This limited engagement offers audiences the chance to experience one of the most original and emotionally resonant films to ever reach the big screen...

James L. Brooks is Back with New Trailer for Ella McKay

Ella McKay starring Emma Mackey looks like a warm-hearted film for at least one half of the country. The jokes are funny. Jamie Lee Curtis seems to be the standout, at least from this early look. It has an Aaron Sorkin vibe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRE6Iobir8k "An idealistic young woman juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them. “Ella McCay” features an all-star cast including Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani,...

An Answer to a Delusional, Rude Comment

Let me start with this. I write controversial pieces and, in general, leave the comments alone where they routinely savage me. This has gone on for years and years, even before politics. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows I was the target of angry swarms for a variety of reasons, the biggest reason is that I say things other people don't and won't and CAN'T say. The difference between me and almost everyone on the Left is that, after ten...

Morning Spit Take: Is One Battle “Left Wing”?

Owen Gleiberman has written a defense piece of One Battle After Another, saying it's not "left-wing." But in so doing, he reveals himself to be afflicted with the same phantasmagoria that afflicts the film itself, thus disproving his own thesis. He is "left-wing" and thus can't see that the film depicts his own worldview. He just thinks it reflects reality. It doesn't. Owen writes: It’s no big shock to see that commentators on the right, the far right, and the extreme alt-right...

Bringing Out The Glam, and Oscar Contenders, at the Academy Museum Gala

What a spectacular night at the Academy Museum, where all of the most famous and fashionable turned out for an evening of fundraising. Any time contenders can have face time with Academy members it helps them get a boost when it comes to voting. This is true at the Governors Awards and is now also true at the Academy Museum gala held last night in Los Angeles. Here is a video of the red carpet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GicdfONfvxQ Kim Kardashian looks like a serial...

2026 Oscar Predictions: The Frontrunners in Each Category

Sinners is showing some signs of life now that it's been given the Ensemble tribute by the Gotham awards, following the announcement that Frankenstein has received the Vanguard Tribute. The Gothams used to have budget requirements for films, but they abandoned that in 2023. That means both Sinners and Frankenstein are also eligible for nominations and awards. It does open the door for One Battle After Another to dominate. At any rate, the Gothams do have one requirement that I wish the...

Let’s Talk Cinema: The 2000’s

The time has come, my friends, to finally get down to the nitty gritty—the subject that really gets everyone worked up and ready to unload all their thoughts and feelings. The subject that reminds you of your highest hopes for a movie, that somehow were dashed, and the pain still feels real for each Oscar predictor… THE SNUBS. Nothing stings worse than a snub—cue all the dramatics with that phrase. There are snubs every single year, and every year you hope it...

CNN Frets That The “Male Gaze” Might Be Coming Back

CNN had a meaty clickbait headline, which is behind a paywall I didn't know CNN had. Times must be a wee bit tough for the network, and so they're out here competing with the rest of us. If you are a subscriber, you can head on over to read the piece. Here are some quotes: Was it around the 2024 presidential election? Or since the overturn of Roe v. Wade? Maybe when men’s rights activists pushed back against #MeToo? Whatever the catalyst,...

The Critics Choice Reveal Documentary Nominations

The CCA just voted for their documentary nominations and Orwell: 2+2=5 leads with seven nominations. It's the height of irony that the same industry that became the book 1984 without realizing it will now use the book to make it seem like they are on the other side. But doesn't that just say everything about film awards now? A flattering magic mirror and the truth be damned? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvGmOZ5T6_Y&t=7s They could have no idea that THEY are the 2+2=5 side. And by "they"...
