New Moon dethrones The Dark Knight’s biggest opening day crown

Unsubstantiated yet but shocking nonetheless. One would expect The Dark Knight’s record to stand for a couple more years but oh well.
Am I foolish for thinking “Wallace & Grommit” already has this win locked up? Nick Park is 4/5 at the Oscars, and the only time he lost it was to himself because he had two nominations that year. Plus “Wallace & Grommit” probably has the longest runtime, a trait that the last 6 winners in this category have in common.
Wow, has anyone watched that “Cat Piano” one? Very good. Intoxicating animation and quite poetic to boot.
I second the Cat Piano love. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Am I the only one who thinks Pixar’s Partly Cloudy is the boringest of all these clips?
And it looks like at least two of these deal with old age and the loss of a lifelong companion. (The Lady and the Reaper, The Kinematograph) And handles the theme with more emotion and pinging of heartstrings than Up did by relegating the same sort of spiritual quest to MacGuffin importance.
i thought Pixar’s Partly Cloudy was pretty cute
I see what you are saying, Ryan. Perhaps the jury were seeking MacGuffins, but where hungry and voted for McMuffins. Seems to me, that gives the NFB a head-start, adding to the 50+ Oscar nominations and wins (including very recent winners: Ryan, and The Danish Poet). I can only assume that 2 time nominee, Cordell Barker’s short, Runaway, will benefit from this homogenesis, even though it is not the longest in the bunch. (they should be tired of Wallice and Gromit by now). Or, maybe not.
Thank you so much for posting these clips, Ryan! French Roast was my favourite from the short clip; I’d love to see more.
I wonder if the fact A Matter of Loaf and Death is rather old now (winning the Annie for last year when up against Presto) hurts its chances this year? With Pixar and Aardman both in the running and consistently getting nominations, this may be a first and see one of them miss out this year (though I think Pixar m issed once when their short wasn’t chosen in 2008?).
Personally, I would be so disappointed if they were to scrap this award to streamline the Oscars further. One of my favourite categories.
Cat Piano is great great great great!
I love The Cat Piano. Can’t go wrong with Nick Cave as the narrator.
Yeah, The Cat Piano is one of my favourite shorts of the year. It’s Australian too, so that’s pretty cool!
This is great news for Pixar which has a long tradition for winning BEST ANIMATED SHORT. If you would like to learn more about PARTLY CLOUDY and the acclaimed animation studio check out this link:

Enjoy.
My predicted 5 for this category:
The Cat Piano
French Roast
A Matter of Loaf and Death
Partly Cloudly
Ruanway
Pixar has actually only won 3 times for this category. Although it did get nominated another 6 times.
Partly Cloudy while cute, I don’t think it deserves to win. Based on the trailer alone I already like The Kinematograph better. Wallace and Gromit I like the series, but this one felt rushed- not worthy of the nomination in my opinion.
“Kinematograph” is the best
