What a change from the last one. It’s way more “Oscary”, meaning less fun. I think it’ll be good, but I really liked the light-hearted feel of the first trailer.
Looks like old-fashioned all-star superficial Hollywood WWII melodrama with quips, 20-20 hindsight groaners, and some explosions, probably at the end.
Entertaining, but been there/done that.
Memo to Hollywood: Stop piling the good (Oscar worthy) movies on in one season. Some of us (me) only have so much money to spend on movies….and right now, I’m about spent-out.
Thanks Ryan!
P.S. I hate this trailer. I hated the first one too. I hate this film. I haven’t seen this film and I hate it. I hate the very idea of it.
Have you seen your psychiatrist lately? Why so hateful? It’s just a film, you don’t even have to watch it if you don’t want to.
looks like Cate is in a perfect spot for a Best Supporting nod with this as well, cementing her Best Actress win for Blue Jasmine.
Jack, I don’t think she’s getting a supporting nod for this, but the buzz around this film along with the commercial success of The Hobbit 2 will definitely cement that Oscar win for her.
by the way, “Blue Jasmine” has officially been placed in the Drama category for the Golden Globes, where “Gravity” will surely be present.
If Blanchett wins that drama Globe, her Oscar is more than secure.
I really hope this doesn’t happen. The last time Blanchett got nominated twice in the one year – deservedly for Supporting, not so deservedly for Lead – it hurt her chances of winning anything at all, in my opinion. Much better for her Blue Jasmine performance to stand alone.
Blanchett’s in about as perfect a spot to get the nomination for this as she was for “The Good German”
I’m not allowed to say that I saw a screening of this yesterday. I’m also not allowed to say that you can definitely cross this off the list of Oscar contenders. I’m not saying that the tone is light farce and nothing at all like what this trailer is selling you. I’m not saying that I was disappointed. I’m especially not saying that the best part of the movie is the interplay between Bill Murray and Bob Balaban but their scenes belong in a different film.
So, you didn’t hear any of this from me.
Thank you for keeping your mouth shut, and making sure you will be allowed to attend other test screenings in the future and you will not report them to us!
Now seriously, I am not at all disappointed that you didn’t say it was a light farce. On the contrary, I was thinking last weekend I would like to see more historical/costume comedies. Why are we always seeing costume dramas or absurd comedies? but rarely do we see quality and realistic comedies set in the past. If it is what you didn’t say it is (and if it is not excruciatingly bad and ill-conceived) I actually hope this could start a trend.
Sounds like Argo to me.
Relieved to hear this. I was worrying that I was missing something. Anyone who can watch these two trailers and scream Oscar must really be Clooney fans. Nothing screams Oscar to me whatsoever. Now American Hustle is a different story!!!!!
I’m not saying that I read this comment.
Yes, thank you for keeping your mouth shut! But seriously, this is confirming what I expected. If there are two trailers, one showing it as strangely farcical and light, the other showing it in familiar “Oscar drama” form, we have every reason to expect the movie actually takes the former style. Bill Murray-Bob Balaban dialogues definitely sound fun though… but other than that, not particularly interested
It still feels like an Ocean Eleven movie set during WW2. But this time the guys are stealing for something greater than themselves.
I WANT to say this looks great and will be a contender but something is just…off for me.
I think 12 Years A Slave is in The Social Network position, and is just waiting for someone to steal its thunder in the end. The Monuments Men and American Hustle look like strong contenders.
This doesn’t seem compelling enough to compete for a Best Picture win. There are reviews online too from test screenings that you can look up that speak to the emptiness in the film, meaning it’s not anything special. Of course anything can change in the Oscar race, especially since this is a Winter Olympics year and voting will be later and last longer, but the path is clear perhaps for the best film of the year to win Best Picture, once its clear what that film is. I just hope the campaigns don’t get obscenely dirty as they were last year, smearing the hopes of a truly great film to get the recognition it deserved.
This trailer makes me realize -again- how underseen and underrated Bryan Singer’s VALKYRIE was.
It’s got the look and feel of a Best Picture winner.
….:) toljda!
Please tell me this isn’t happening
Still strangely bad. I’m thinking closer to “The Good Shepherd” than “Argo”.
with some Coen Bros. gags
That’s a completely different tone than the last one. Now I don’t know what to think.
A couple years back I was hoping for a moratorium on WWII movies. And vampire movies. I’d just had enough. Anyway, that’s why I’m not jazzed for this movie personally. But it actually does look good. I don’t know why I was reminded of THE RED DANUBE. A film I quite liked. I guess because instead of being straight up WWII movies, they’re WWII-ish.
It’s back in the game! I really liked this trailer. And I totally hated the first one.
