Fox Searchlight has set September 22 as the release date for Battle of The Sexes. Starring Oscar Winner Emma Stone and Steve Carell, Battle of The Sexes is based on the famous tennis match that took place on September 20, 1973 in Houston, Texas after Bobby Riggs (Carell) declared he could beat any female tennis player. Billie Jean-King (Stone) was the world’s number one female tennis player at the time, and she took him on in the famous tennis face-off.
The result was one of the most watched televised sporting events at the time. The match between Jean King and Riggs made for a social statement about women in sports and equality in the game.
Battle of the Sexes also stars Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Elisabeth Shue, and Bill Pullman. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris direct.
