The Feminist Majority Foundation honored actors, producers, and activists at their annual Global Women’s Rights Awards in LA. America Ferrera and Amy Brenneman were among the honorees.
The Global Women’s Rights Awards highlights the work of individuals as well as organizations who have contributed significantly to advancing the rights of women and girls around the world. Past honorees have included Shonda Rhimes, Jenji Kohan, Rosario Dawson, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Soosan Firooz, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Gloria Steinem.
“The challenge for American women in the 20th century was to win the right to vote,” Ms. Executive Editor and FMF Executive Director Kathy Spillar said in her introductory remarks. “Our challenge in the 21st century is to use our votes as a powerful lever for advancing better social policy and smart solutions to our country’s problems, to win full legal equality for women and girls, and to claim our rightful place at the tables of political power in equal numbers – including the highest elected office in this country.”
The honorees were united in their work to preserve and advance progress for women and girls around the world. Ferrera has done significant work with organizations tackling voter suppression, healthcare, education, and immigration. Brenneman is an outspoken proponent for access to safe abortion who has filed an amicus brief against Texas’ draconian anti-abortion laws. Mlambo-Ngcuka fought poverty and gender inequality as Deputy President of South Africa and now leads the UN’s work on gender equality worldwide. Weaver has led the fight against corruption and cronyism in Flint that has left its residents without safe drinking water.
