18 Animated Films to Compete for Oscar

And they are:

“The Adventures of Tintin”
“Alois Nebel”
“Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked”
“Arthur Christmas”
“Cars 2″
“A Cat in Paris”
“Chico & Rita”
“Gnomeo & Juliet”
“Happy Feet Two”
“Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil”
“Kung Fu Panda 2″
“Mars Needs Moms”
“Puss in Boots”
“Rango”
“Rio”
“The Smurfs”
“Winnie the Pooh”
“Wrinkles”

So it looks like there will be five Animated Feature nominees! Yay, I love it when there are five.

The AMPAS offers up the following paragraph helpfully:

Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.

  1. We needed 5 nominees LAST year or year before for that matter. But I guess, Rio should win here. Good luck getting nominated, Mars Needs Moms or Cars 2!

Do you mean that Rio would be your choice to win, or that it is the strongest contender? The strongest contender is easily Tintin.

    Cars 2

Rango for the win, of course! ;)

    “Rango”
    “The Adventures of Tintin”
    “Kung Fu Panda 2″
    “Winnie the Pooh”
    “Puss in Boots”

That is unless one of the unseen or foreign films (Alois Nebel, Arthur Christmas, A Cat in Paris, Chico & Rita, Happy Feet Two or Wrinkles) makes an impression. In that case it would replace Puss in Boots.

  35. Three out of five will be:

    1. Tin-Tin
    2. Rango
    3. Arthur Christmas (I can’t believe no other comments predict a film from the people who brought us Chicken Run)

Several other films have a shot at the other two slots for various reasons:

    1. Happy Feet Two or Puss in Boots: In a year so full of sequels and spin offs it seems likely one will break through. Puss is the most likely one seen thus far, but who knows about Happy Feet?
    2. Winnie the Pooh: Disney has a huge voting block in this branch and with Cars 2 (ahem) stalled out, many will throw support here automatically.
    3. Rio: Box office DOES have SOME impact.
    4. A Cat in Paris or Chico and Rita or Alois Nebel: Remember The Secret of Kells. Nuff said.

I thought these were the 18 films that the Academy can confirm were submitted to them for consideration, and that they now will now decide on which of these 18 will be eligible for nominations?? So, while there WILL be five nominees b/c 18 were submitted, they can still deem some of these titles ineligible.

…but I feel like I never know with AMPAS, I could be wrong…

Tangled, Despicable Me (and even My Dog Tulip which did not get in because The Ilusionist was already the arthouse foreign nomination) would not only be sure nominees but also have a good shot at winning. How To Train Your Dragon and The Ilusionist would propably be locks to win this year.

    Regarding the nominations,
    “The Adventures of Tintin”
    “Arthur Christmas”
    “Cars 2″
    “Chico & Rita”
    “Happy Feet Two”
    “Kung Fu Panda 2″
    “Puss in Boots”
    “Rango”
    “Rio”
    “Winnie the Pooh”

all look like having a shot at the nomination. Rango and probably Tintin are locks. For me, Arthur is in too. One of the last two films nominated will be chosen between Dream Works’ Puss In Boots and Kung Fu Panda. I predict it will pe Panda. And the 5th and last nomination for me is Rio.

  79. ‘Rio’? Really? I mean, it’s cute for the little ones, but it’s so corny. I didn’t even like the animation very much other than to say it was very colorful. ‘Rango’ is by FAR the best animated film I’ve seen so far this year, and the animation, character design, and lighting are incredible. It’s one of my favorite films of the year, period. Overall this year has been weak for animated film’s so far… That said, if ‘Tintin’ is eligible, it’s in. So, if all works out and we get 5 nominees, I’m thinking they’ll be:

    ‘Rango’
    ‘The Adventures of Tintin’
    ‘Kung Fu Panda’

I didn’t even like the animation very much other than to say it was very colorful. ‘Rango’ is by FAR the best animated film I’ve seen so far this year, and the animation, character design, and lighting are incredible. It’s one of my favorite films of the year, period. Overall this year has been weak for animated film’s so far… That said, if ‘Tintin’ is eligible, it’s in. So, if all works out and we get 5 nominees, I’m thinking they’ll be:

    ‘Rango’
    ‘The Adventures of Tintin’
    ‘Kung Fu Panda’
    ‘Rio’
‘Puss In Boots’ or ‘Happy Feet Two’

  89. If Winnie the Pooh is a shoe in then the art of animation is in big trouble. It had the animated quality of the originial work but lacked any cohesive or even interesting story line. I love animation, it’s one of my favorite genres because it feeds the kid in me. Winnie was deplorable in my opinion. That script just made me want to run my fingers across a black board to shut them all up and tell them to start over.

  91. Tintin or Rango. These are actually the only animated movies I was interested to see this year. Rango is indeed very underrated. The animation is outstanding.
If Cars 2 gets nominated It´ll be a great shame.

    In case of 3 nominees:
    The Adventures of Tintin
    Rango
    Arthur Christmas (because it´s British)

    In case of 5 nominess:
    The Adventures of Tintin
    Rango
    Arthur Christmas
    Rio
    Winnie the Pooh

  93. Arriety can’t qualify next year. Its Japanese release date was last year. If Disney wanted it to qualify, it had to be this year.

From the Oscars rulebook (on Oscars.org):

A motion picture first theatrically exhibited inside the U.S. prior to the Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for submission provided the prior exhibition takes place in a commercial motion picture theater after January 1, 2010, and that no other form of public exhibition occurs through the completion of its Los Angeles County qualifying run (previews and festivals excluded).

  95. I Would be pissed off if Tintin won, because it is directed by steven speilberg, or Rango, because of visuals.

My Predictions for a win is a Dreamworks Animation Movie for either Kung Fu Panda 2 (Since the first was nominated and should deserve a win) or Puss in boots since the movie is pretty action hilarious packed!

  105. @Bryce — it’s on IMDb, but under its Spanish title “Arrugas”. Still not much info on it, though: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1407052/

Also, the Oscars rulebook says that “motion capture by itself is not an animation technique.” Isn’t Tintin entirely motion-capture and therefore ineligible? I’m having trouble finding info on whether or not any other animation techniques were used in the making of the film…. either way, Animated Feature will be an interesting category this year, if only because Pixar isn’t dominating the category for once. (TEAM RANGO!)

  109. People, wake up! Motion capture animation is out this year by the new rules of AMPAS. TINTIN, by this, wouldn’t be nominated, neither MARS NEEDS MOMS (or SMURFS and ALVIN, because of the live action). They’re in this first list just because producers decided to take a chance, I think. Or I am totally wrong… (or it will be 3 nominees).
