Best Actor – So Many Strong Performances Makes for a Real Competition [Poll]

There have been so many leading male performances worthy of an Oscar win this year, starting with Chadwick Boseman as the stoic newly appointed Black Panther, ruler of Wakanda. Ethan Hawke as a priest wrestling with the meaning of life in First Reformed. Willem Dafoe won Best Actor for his work in one of the year's best films, At Eternity's Gate. Very quickly Bradley Cooper earned praise for directing and starring in A Star is Born. Then Viggo Mortensen starred in Green Book which surprised everyone by winning in Toronto, beating A Star is Born, Roma and every...

Monday Morning Oscar Squad – A Tale of Two Oscars

The Oscar race for Best Picture, and for a variety of other categories, is, as our friend Jazz Tangcay likes to say "horseshit all over the road." And indeed, that is exactly what it is. No one knows what's up because what's up is down. Some films that did well throughout festival season turned out to be films that ticket-buyers didn't go see. The buzz and hype and good reviews did nada, zip, niente to attract moviegoers. What did well with audiences were -- wait for it -- popular movies. Who'da thunk it? So Bohemian Rhapsody, rejected entirely...

Christian Bale Delivers Finest Performance to Date as Dick Cheney in Adam McKay’s Vice

Vice screened tonight for the SAG nominating committee and looks to do what The Big Short did last year, at least in terms of the acting. Although there is a review embargo up I can talk about the screening. In a packed theater in Westwood, there was some press - with Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Tyler Perry and writer/director Adam McKay all in attendance for the q&a. It's not really a film where you leap to your feet with a standing ovation afterwards. It is too sobering and hard-hitting for that. Believe me, you will want to burst...

First Reformed and Beale Street Emerge as Strong Contenders From the Gothams/Spirits Two Step

The Spirit Awards came through with several surprises, at least if you go by the narrative from the Oscar world, which isn't all that reliable since we're looking at the long game. These awards clearly wanted to spread the wealth. Probably the biggest and most surprising omission was the absence of Melissa McCarthy and Can You Ever Forgive Me. Rather than honoring Marielle Heller for her brilliantly directed film, they went another way and chose to honor directors for films more under the radar, like Debra Granik's truly brilliant Leave No Trace and Tamra Jenkins' Private Life. Paul...
